Where MX vs ATV Untamed is about the races and the stunts, the course we drove on is all about skillfully steering the vehicle through some incredibly tight checkpoints without hitting them, all while trying to actually control the large 4x4 itself. While the steering wheel is set for the front wheels, there is a lever next to your hip on the left that you must move from side to side to properly adjust the back wheels as well. After being so used to driving a normal vehicle, it's certainly a big adjustment having to coordinate both the front and back wheels seperately.
Daniel seemed to be getting the hang of it, while I was probably the one that hit the most tyres, effectively receiving what was probably a terrible score by the end of it all. At one stage in the course, you actually have to drive one side of the 4x4 up onto a couple of tyres and then across a wall, meaning that you're literally driving at what must have been a 60 or so degree angle. Along with some other parts of the course where you pretty much are at the mercy of the vehicle you're driving, it was an exhilerating experience to say the least.
Although the racing in MX vs ATV Untamed is much faster paced than the tortoise-like driving skills of myself, it was great to actually drive some vehicles similar to what's seen in the game, of course in a safe environment where there is no real fear of crashing or flying out of your seat like you may experience in the ATV game series. Keep an eye out for our full review of MX vs ATV Untamed sometime in the next week or so, and check out the Ragged Edge 4x4 website if you have the urge to do some 4x4 driving of your own here in Melbourne.
A big thanks to THQ for setting up a really fun day, especially Drew and Pauly who were there for the experience as well, and thanks to Ragged Edge 4x4 for not laughing too much at my lack of 4x4 skills - it's very much appreciated.
