POTW: Out with the old, in with the new

PALGN Feature | Will the new DSi see your old DS replaced?
The rumours of a new Nintendo portable upgrade have been circulating for quite some time, but earlier this week, they began to firm. And unusually, the rumour mill chalked one up in the 'correct' box when on Thursday, Nintendo did indeed reveal a new handheld - the DSi. Although it's probably not quite the wholly new device some rumours hinted at, the DSi does sport two cameras, a thinner waistline and an SD slot for storage.

The question is, however: how many people will upgrade, or further, how many people will now take the opportunity to invest in a DS because of the new additions? Instead of puzzling over it ourselves, we ask you, readers. Will you upgrade to a DSi?

I'll be replacing my release day DS Phat with a DSi because the battery's starting to get a bit unreliable.

I have a camera and an MP3 player in my phone, and both are fine, so my DS lite is pretty safe from being replaced.

I'm thinking I might get a DS Lite if the price goes down a bit when DSi comes out. :?

I definitely want to know what this stylus fuss is all about.

Anyway, I answered the fourth. After seeing some comparison shots, and reading some features lists, I've come to the conclusion that DS Lite is the better model for my modern, go getter, on the go life style.

The DSi looks alright, but it's hardly revolutionary. I've never been one to buy revisions of consoles (I stuck with my launch GBA, and have an original "fat" PS2), if I have an older model, and it still works fine and does everything I want it to, then buying a new model is just a waste of money, no matter how nice it looks. For that reason, I'll be sticking with my launch DS consoles, whose batteries are still as reliable as the day I bought them. +1 for Nintendo, they were worth every cent. icon_smile.gif

I don't really need the DSi, all these gadgets that come with it do not entice me one bit. I play games, I don't take pictures or whatever else the thing can do, I simply put in the game and play. I will give it a miss.

Besides I just bought my new blue/black DSlite. And the sexy beast has all my attention.

They should have named this thing the ''DS-Y'' - ie. Why in the blue hell add a subpar feature (low res vga cameras) and remove a more important one (GBA backwards compatibility).. ?

My DS Lite can definately breathe a safe sigh of relief!

Ha! I'm not one to 'upgrade' my consoles (besides my pc icon_wink.gif) and while I'm a sucker for shiny new tech, in reality I'll be able to do less with a DSi. GBA functionality is great, I'm not willing to trade it off for the ability to take **** photos and have half the battery life (what the f**k is with that anyway?!)

So it plays music off an SD card.. you can buy $5 gadgets that do that as well. I'm not sure why you'd want to cart your DS around in your pocket to listen to music.. (also, massive lulz if it doesn't support SDHC.) And anyway, thanks to homebrew you're more than capable of listening to music (and watching videos) on a DS Lite or DS Phat.

Also, the bigger screen.. do not want. Games so far have been designed for the DS Lite/Phat's screens. Larger ones means games like Elite Beat Agents will be much easier on the DSi. Therefore anyone with a DSi is a big fat cheater icon_smile.gif

I bought the system to game, not to listen to muzic while distorting a picture going lolwut. As such, my phat is fine, I like big butts and I can not lie...

I'm just bought a DS and I'm not about to upgrade for an SD slot and a 0.3MP camera. (They probably had some leftover lenses from the GB camera, if anyone remembers those icon_razz.gif)

I already own a DS Lite which I'll probably give to my sister when this comes out here in like another five or more months.

I still have my original DS bought on release day, I only upgraded to a DS Lite because it was designed better. EG: No dust can get into via sides like the Phat, which got abit annoying for me.

Plus the DS Lite I picked up is a Zelda DS Lite, it's sexy.

I'll only buy a DSi when they go down in price (like I did with the Lite) and when they release a special edition I'm interested in.

Overall the camera is a cheeseball gimmic, just like the Gameboy Camera, which I still got. I do admit it came in handy (for back in the day since phones didn't have cameras like they do now) and was fun to use but like everyone said, phones have better cameras and smaller in size and greater in quality.

Oh and I wouldn't be able to enjoy Metroid Prime: Pinball on a DSi since I can't plug my rumble pack into one. Booo...

I voted for: I do not plan on replacing my DS.

If anyone hasn't already voted, it's recently been said that now the DSi games will not be region free.

I have a DS Lite, why bother changing when i've already got an ipod, a phone with a better camera, and a super Card which supports storage (and also already plays music videos homebrew games etc.)?

This is inexcusable Nintendo.
If any of you wanted to know, Nintendo are just trying to compete with the piracy on the DS, but they could've released something a bit more inventive.

Definite No. I'll buy a PSP 3000, or maybe some toothpicks

I do not own a DS and the DSi does not entice me do buy one .

I do not own a DS, and I'm really interested in a DSi.

I was planning on purchasing an iPod Touch, later on, because I considered it was exactly what I needed. I was a little hesitant, because the 'Google phone' also interested me, so I was just waiting, really.

But after the DSi was announced, with all the new features, and the promising DSiWare (with applications, etc.), I was totally sold. Just what I need.

Some people say the DSi is somewhat a menace for the iPod Touch, and I don't agree completely, but in this case, it really is — I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who changed perspective after the DSi was announced, dumping other options, and specifically the Touch.

Despite what others say, I applaud Nintendo.

(As a side note, I didn't know registration was needed, until I wrote the message... So, there you go, another registered user.(

I haven't been playing my DS much lately, and this doesn't interest me enough to justify spending any money on.

I don't plan on updating my DS Phat, it's still going fine, especially since I'd be losing the GBA slot (playing FFIV GBA at the moment).

I think it'd be interesting to see the first two options split between people who have a Phat and a Lite.

I'm not upgrading my DS original until DSes come in aluminium, the logos glow from the backlight of the screens and the buttons being backlit. Anything less than that is poor form Nintendo.

Honestly, why not just put the i in front and get it over with already.

I MIGHT get one, considering I think the life of my phat is dwindling... but then again, the new features seem too gimmicky to include any really good games, so if it cuts the price of lites I might just go for that...

Sounds like you want a DS Pro.

Aww hell no.

I can't see a single thing about the DSi that is actully better then my DS Lite, infact most of the stuff I see is worse. Lower battery life, no GBA slot... **** that noise.
