PS2 used to ship drugs into Australia

PALGN News | It didn't work, though.
Some inventive smugglers have attempted to ship 3,400 ecstasy tablets into Australia by stuffing them inside a hollowed out PlayStation 2 console.

The drugs, totalling almost a kilogram in weight, were discovered by customs in Sydney's international mail sorting office on the 5th of October according to the Courier Mail. The smugglers managed to stuff three big packs of the tablets inside of the console, and a few more inside of a game cover. That's an awful lot of pills.

The Australian Federal Police tracked the package to Queensland, resulting in the arrest of two Canadians aged 18 and a 20 year old New Zealander in Surfer's Paradise. The very, very naughty parties involved are looking at life in jail or a AUD $825,000 fine if they are found guilty. Or both. It seems that drug trafficking isn't a game.

Didn't work? how many made it through before this????

^ millions of dollars worth more. I would say they probably got 10-15 of this type through before they were finally caught. They probably tried to put too many in though, and they should have stuck to the ps2 instead of putting some in games

I'm waiting for the inevitable link between gaming and taking drugs that the media/politicians will make. Like "Guns don't kill people gamers do", there'll be a new motto, "Loss/depression/peer pressure etc does'nt make people turn to illegal substances, videogames do".

I disagree. As a person who has witnessed the Australian Customs first hand, beleive me when I say they are arguably the best in the world. They wont let anything through if it looks weird at all.

Even sourvenous from other countries are hard to get though.

Judging by this story and after seeing the picture of the way they stuffed the drugs in the PS2, these kids sound like some pothead skateboarders who tried to get lucky and failed big time.

Anyway, the Aussie Custom are some of the best in the world.

Irony. I bet they'll be wishing for a real PS2 in jail.

I was pulled aside by a Customs thug coming into Brisbane from Japan once. Didn't believe my story that I was visting friends, going to concerts (despite showing the concert ticket stubs), going shopping (had tons of anime and game crap in my bags) etc. Helped himself to looking at the photos on my camera, asking if I'd "scored with the chicks" in some of them (my friends), when I said no he said "what, you don't like girls?" with a decidedly insulting tone and made smart arse comments about what I did with my time. Not to mention another one walked off with my laptop to do who-knows-what with it.

Real top quality, that one.

^ and i bet as the latex glove snapped on, he would've been thinking what Benza quoted, once again...

belittling people in authority positions to their face achieves nothing but pain. take their badge number, make a complaint after the fact.

Yeah, Australia's customs are anything but top notch. My friend was coming back from Singapore and got detained for no reason for 4 hours, where every little thing he had was searched and he was repeatedly asked the same questions. When he asked if he could leave they said yes, but even when he got up to go, they refused to unlock the door.

Also, I do remember talking to this guy who used to work in Perth customs and he basically admitted that most of them (read: not all) are washed up security who have a chip on their shoulder and a total lack of work ethic.

Also, what Obsolete said. You'd be surprised how much damage you can do by reporting misconduct.

Using PS2's as drug containers. That's certainly interesting. I wonder how the drugs were discovered. Maybe the PS2 felt too light? Maybe there was rattling coming from the console?

^ I would assume xray would show that there was a significant lack of the bits that are usually found in electronics ?
