POTW: Just in it for the multiplayer?

PALGN Feature | Multiple choice.
You may recall a couple of weeks ago we reported on an intriguing statistic from Xbox Live that thirty per cent of users do not touch the single-player campaign in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare at all, preferring just to stick to multiplayer.

It certainly created discussion in the forums about the merits of multiplayer thrills versus some serious solo fun and of course whether this particular stat was bogus or not. A number of PALGN members also predicted that this figure would apply to many other games as well.

As such we thought it'd be a good idea to run our own poll on the topic and see what's what. So this week we want to know - give us a straight yes or no - have you ever purchased a game and not played the single-player mode at all?

There have been moments where I've been unwilling to play the single player campaign for various reasons (i.e. nearly wetting my pants in the first level thanks to something covered in tentacles pouncing me), but I always get dragged in eventually. I do know people who only play the MP element of COD4, but I know that they're missing out by doing so.

I'm the other way around- I rarely play the multiplayer side of games at all. About the only games I've played MP recently are um... Halo 3, COD4 (during that double-XP weekend only), and the R6: Vegas games.

Gaming with other people is just a pain to me, and I don't find it rewarding at all. One or two matches is enough before I'm bored. I play games to experience a story, not teabag some guy from across the other side of the world. icon_lol_old.gif

more fun to play with freinds, playing single player you cant do that, and thats why i get bored playing single player games easily.
doesnt mean i never play single player, but i usually buy games for online only, and i play alot more online then anything else.

I usually play the whole single player campaign first before I touch the multiplayer, as silly as it sounds, I feel like I'm getting spoilers if I play multiplayer first because I'll have access to all the weapons for example.

That being said I voted yes, because ONCE I bought a game for just the multiplayer, Warlords III icon_razz.gif
To answer the question: No. But to reverse the question, I do not play multiplayer (online or otherwise) modes on most of the games I buy. Perhaps it's because I find online gaming unappealing, perhaps it's because the general majority of my real life friends - who are scarce - don't game, or it could just be that I'm just completely **** at games and don't find being owned time and time again appealing.

I voted no but I didn’t take into account 2-player co-op wich I have deffintly done. I’ve done plenty of 2 player co-op games without playing em solo. Crystal Chronicals on the cube, Contra 3 on the SNES, Gears 1 and 2 etc.

^ yeah i've also played a few games only co-op, and then there are those that are meant to be multiplayer only, but have some single player mode tacked on (Unreal Tournaments, for example), but i didn't really consider these to be within the scope of the question - i suppose i take multiplayer to mean some sort of versus mode, and single player to be something with some form of plot.

so on this basis, no, i don't think i have.

it might come across strange, but i get very bored of playing the same maps over and over and over. i say strange, because the people i know who do really enjoy multiplayer games say the same of single player modes, in that they get bored of shooting (or whatever) the same enemies over and over, clearing out rooms ad nauseum.

i can sit down and play some death matches for a while. load up COD4 and shoot some people for a laugh, but i get bored of it. i might do that for a day at a mates place, or we might organise to do it one day, but then it's very unlikely i'll do it again for another month - at least not of my own volition.

similarly in WoW, i have PVPed, and i've even had fun doing so, but i just get so bored of it that if i hop on with a mate and do a couple of BGs or Arenas, i probably won't do them again for a few weeks.
and this also brings back the "strange" comment, since several of my mates find raiding incredibly boring, doing the same fight over and over, with little variation week to week. but that's how i feel about extended PVPing. it's fine for a while, but at least a raid offers variations every half hour or so.
(i actually used to really love old-school AV - with all the little objectives, and summonable bosses, now it's just retarded, and then they removed the ability to fish in there too. icon_sad.gif )

A whole bunch of stuff
I agree with a lot of the stuff you said there howeverr for some reason I love pvp in WoW far more then PVE Raid stuff, I'll tend to want to do a raid once or twice to get all the story from it then would much rather do some Battlegrounds.

Hell yes for bringing back oldschool 9 hour long AV though.

Also conversley I bought SF 4 with every intention of not playing the single player then it forced me to do it to unlock the charecters.

Again I'm the opposite, the only time I multiplay anything is at LAN's and they're few and far between, otherwise I really couldn't care less for multiplayer content.

I don't see the point in only playing half of a game, especially when you have actually paid for it.

Mario Kart. My girlfriend unlocks stages, then we play them multiplayer together. And that's the way it's always been.

Absolutely not. For one thing a single player experience can help to be a training ground of sorts for online play as depending on who you play against it can be a much more difficult experience, especially if there are people who exploit cheats and glitches and the like to a ludicrious extent. Admittedly I don't play online a lot but when I do it tends to be reasonably balanced and rewarding reardless of whether or not I know the people I'm facing(eg Mario Kart Wii, Polemon etc).

The only game I just played online was L4D. I hope developers don't get rid of the SP although I don't think they will

Had to go with "Yes" as technically I picked up Left 4 Dead for it's multiplayer.

Yes GTA4.

No the fact that I'm dropping nearly $100 on a game means that I want to squeeze ever inch of gameplay value out of it to make my purchase worthwhile. Although, I must admit that I do tend to get hooked into the multiplayer first and then go back to the single-player component once the excitement of the online component wears off.

No, never ever ever. The one case I can think of where I did was the first Gears of War, and I felt pretty bad doing so. Playing through the singleplayer component of a title familiarises you with the gameplay a lot quicker than multiplayer does.

That being said - if the game has a poor excuse for a singleplayer mode.. eg obviously I never wasted my time with the 'campaigns' in the UT series. I'm also generally not fond of the campaign scenarios in most RTS games, besides something story driven like Warcraft III. AoEII is my favourite RTS ever (which gets a decent amount of playtime every year) yet the last time I even tried the campaign was 6 or 7 years ago.

Mostly no. I am a single player gamer, mostly rpg (raised up as one before mmorpg got popular and never got into it).

I did say mostly no because I had 3 exceptions. 3 games my other half and I purchased together with the intention to play online together alone but also to play the single player ourselves. These games were Worms World Party, Neverwinter Nights and BF:Vietnam Redux (playing 1942 maps in Vietnam!!!).

lol for me it's the opposite icon_biggrin.gif I have bought some games with online but never play them :S I'm a one-player man, I'd rather not having American's yelling at me broken messages the whole time ;D and plus I don't like shooters which are all online-orientated these days...

Hmmm... I think these statistics can be a little misleading. I have a few friends that create a new gametag every time they renew their gold membership on xbox live… So even though they have played through the single player campaign, their current gametag will only show them as having played multiplayer only.

Except it was just a question posed to people on the forum and had nothing to do with gamertags.

Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead. Even Halo 3 - I never played through the entire campaign on my own, always play with other people. Does it count if they're in the room with you?

I get more out of the single player. I have always loved playing SP and feeling that accomplishment, particulary with games like Okami and Shadow of the Collosus, these are games I would happily play over COD4 or Halo 3 Multiplayer.

That said, if I want to mess around with mates I will happily hop online, its more of an added bonus, thats why I tend to stay away from Multiplayer only games.
