Oz internet filter to block sites selling mature games?

PALGN News | Could the days of buying from Play-Asia, eBay and Amazon soon be over?
According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald , the Australian Government says it will use its internet filter to block websites hosting and selling video games that don't comply with Australia's ratings system. The internet filter is currently being trialled by nine internet service providers and could soon be introduced across all Australian internet services.

A spokesman for Australian Communications Minister, Senator Stephen Conroy, has confirmed the intention to block downloadable games, flash-based web games and sites which sell physical copies of games that do not meet the MA15+ standard, Australia's highest rating.

Colin Jacobs, a spokesman for the online users' lobby group, Electronic Frontiers Australia, said the Government's internet filtering plans had now gone beyond the original intention to help protect against the abuse of children.

"This is confirmation that the scope of the mandatory censorship scheme will keep on creeping," he said. "Far from being the ultimate weapon against child abuse, it now will officially censor content deemed too controversial for a 15-year-old. In a free country like ours, do we really need the government to step in and save us from racy web games?"

Ron Curry, the chief executive of the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia - which is the group that represents the Australian entertainment industry - said the situation further highlighted the need to have an R18+ rating for games.

"It's through the introduction of an R18+ classification that adults will have access to age appropriate material and parents will have the full tool kit to understand the suitability of content for their children," he said.

The internet filtering issue is also receiving international condemnation with Senator Conroy being nominated by Britain's Internet Services Providers' Association for its annual "internet villain" award. Senator Conroy was nominated "for continuing to promote network-level blocking despite significant national and international opposition".

If you are interested in the ongoing debate for the introduction of an R18+ rating, check out http://everyoneplays.org.au/. Also be sure to make your voice heard by writing a (sensible) letter to Senator Conroy and to your local member.

It's a case of misunderstanding or ignorance.

Conroy does not want to listen to us gamer's views. I'm sure if he understood that a R18+ rating is just a classification for many games that would be classified MA15+ here, he would relent.

ZEITGEIST, people. (Check it out, both movies.) Wake up.

If I remember my reading correctly, we are one of the only countries* who do not have an 'Over 18' rating for video games(*of the countries belonging to that ratings board), which, in my opinion, is absolutely ridiculous. There is NO legitimate reason why there shouldn't be, instead of spending millions curtailing a small few people from having easier access to such material. Goddam. Censorship? Do we really need more? I mean, yes, we do, (for example, some of the smut on television during small children-watching hours I would have thought would have been more of a concern..)
Stick your nose where it belongs and can be useful, Government.

Taking people's freedoms away IS an extreme.

Just because people aren't being marched off into camps doesn't mean this isn't a DEATH of some sort - in this case our freedoms. Even the smallest of freedoms and liberties are pertinent.

Under law, this new filter is not "representative of community standards". Such standards are not measured in the future or by ideals, they are CURRENT standards and Conroy is in serious remiss of that. He should stand down.

The games are but a medium for us to express our thoughts. Now say that one person who was willing to express some thought of murder, but didn't have the games to do it.

They'd do it through something else. Media will always create something to blame, rather then attribute it to a likely factor which would most likably be related to a real life incident from the past. (Rather than a hobby)

The governments are wasting there time and money, put funds into the prevention of bullying and abuse, and more funds into teaching people a better way of life and setting good examples. ... Governments really have no idea =[

And to undermine my argument and the governments, the MA15+ games are fairly fairly bad as it is. This is all pointless.

Censorship is only the beginning of a much bigger manipulative plan to control the masses and of course our money and where we spend it. If Conroy gets his way we have all fallen into their greedy corporate hands.
And I find it hard to swallow that anyone is naive enough to believe that internet filtering will solve any of the issues raised in the government scarepaign propaganda.

If you like Zeitgeist 1 & 2 (2 being better than 1), google video search "Jordan Maxwell: Exposes Illuminati"

Zeitgeist 1 was dedicated to him because it borrowed Jordan's teachings. Matrix, the movie, was also born out of Jordan Maxwell's teachings. +++++

This entire Internet filtering plan is absolutely no different to controlling what phone numbers people can dial from within Australia. It is no different to the Post Office opening up our mail and checking it for 'inappropriate content'. It is no different to 'blocking out' certain words/phrases in emails or SMS's we send.

Why the government thinks it has any right what so ever to dictate our Internet connections is beyond me. They really might as well blacklist certain phone numbers so we can't order porn over the phone. None the less I already have various methods in place to totally circumvent this inane **** should it ever get through parliament.

It's not just porn that's in trouble here. This filter is going to affect almost every aspect of our lives. From games, porn, political opinions, medical sites and much much more!!

I've seen the blacklist, don't believe them when they say that they won't be banning political free speech either, because the will!

They want to turn us into mindless sheep, which is one reason they keep pouring the fluoride into our water... to dumb us down.

Now Geelong residents, Aus, are being forced to have fluoride in their drinking water. It's not to strengthen our teeth. If I wanted stronger teeth I'll brush them.

There is ONE pro reason for fluoride in our water and DOZENS of dangerous negative reasons NOT to have it in our drinking water. Bone degradation, lower iq, makes you passive, DNA damage etc. Wake the F up people.

"As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."

If you (the generic "you") want to be taken seriously, it's important to stop talking about what _might_ happen as a result of the filter, and actually address the govt's motivations. I sincerely doubt they are malicious, otherwise there's much better ways of controlling a population.

No, more likely, Conroy originally had his stupid filtering idea, thought it might solve the issues that parents have with not knowing what their kids are doing on the 'net (yes, I think the motivation is that parents are lazy and will therefore vote for measures that limit their children's freedom rather than educating them - but not for maliciousness, just convenience). Then a whole lot of conspiracy theorists on the internet started making noise, and face it, when that group speaks, the public (Conroy included) is absolutely certain to feel that their proposal is vindicated.

What really needs to happen is that we need to spread awareness of the merits of education as opposed to limitation. Instead of censoring content, people should be smart enough to know when content is misleading, inappropriate, or otherwise unsavory. It's really as simple as having a few movies or TV shows that feature the theme of education > indoctrination; that's far more influential than forum rants.

If you want to make a change in someone's mind, you need to start from a point they can accept. That's why good negotiators are flexible and understanding. We certainly shouldn't need to "compromise" on having any level of internet filtering, but we most certainly should be supportive of at least some of the motives at play (ultimately, the big 2 are parents who want to protect their kids - this has to be acceptable to SOME extent, kids of a young age are just not able to deal with certain topics without experiencing emotional harm - and also preventing criminal activity).

Now, internet censorship is a bad solution (hell, it doesn't even solve it), but if we really want to derail the plan, we need to have an alternative to put forward.

Yep, and don't forget the old fluoride conspiracy. It's like G8 - hijack other protests with your own message and in the process muddle the point so noone knows what anyone's protesting for just that they're against everything.

It's getting to that point. Lucky country my arse - lucky if the government lets us see women in anything but burqas on the net soon. Choose your destiny - Iran or China.

Did you just seriously compare Australia to Iran? I think you need a little perspective there.

Destiny = future and every journey begins with a single step. Iran's current theocracy started with a revolt for freedom and look where they ended up.

First they came for the child porn and I did nothing for I wasn't into child porn, then they came for the mature games...

[EDIT]
Sorry Kari didn't see your post.

On the topic at hand, I think the more stuff they add to this filter the better off we may be. I mean the more thats added to it the less chance of it actually passing.
