Love to Hate #14

PALGN Feature | OMG NOOB TUUBBEE icon_sad.gif
So, who likes Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare?! I’m guessing a whole bunch of you, considering the game is quite well received and sold like a billion copies when it came out. I’m also going to assume many of you play the multiplayer aspect of CoD4 as well, which is considered to be some of the highest quality Multiplayer gaming around. Well, I can agree with that... to an extent. Yes dear readers, this episode’s Love to Hate is another multiplayer rage fest, and the target this time round is none other than CoD4. Does it deserve the targeting though?

Oh hell yes it does, and I feel no shame in saying that either. Though I’m not directly targeting the gameplay mechanics of CoD4 here, no sir. I think the game’s great! Frenetic and fun gameplay, interesting rank up system with perks, and crazy insane spam fests, particularly with the PC version where it literally turns into Call of Duty 4: Airstrike Warfare many a time. But see, it’s not the game’s features or spam levels that are a problem.

See, CoD4’s system works in that if you get 3 kills in a row, you get a UAV radar which lets you see your enemies on the radar for 30 seconds. Cool, very useful tool. 5 kills nets you an airstrike. Combine this with a UAV and you can nail some pretty nasty strikes. Then 7 kills in a row gets you a Helicopter, which auto targets people and pretty much nets you a free kill. It’s nasty and a big pain in the backside... but it’s all manageable, as long as you know how to get into cover and work as a team to take down choppers. And that’s where the problem comes in, teamwork.

In CoD4, when playing a TDM game, you will rarely have team mates co-ordinate properly to take down a chopper, and this is a problem when you’re playing on PC, with 32 players, and on Hardcore mode where one shot is almost always a kill. All it ends up doing is make ignorant fools constantly complain that choppers are ridiculous and painful, and rack up MASSIVE amounts of kills for the opposing team, all the while making you burst a vein as to how stupid some team mates can be. Choppers can be taken down in seconds with the right team mates, but generally in your average game, your team mates are more or less too dense to aim upwards and fire at the giant flying machine of death above, so you’re stuck by yourself taking it down, and when you’re a sniper or an SMG based player with no RPGs, this proves problematic. Not so much when you ARE equipped with the right tools, but it can be a pain nonetheless.

Then you’ve got certain perks and weapons which are apparently awful for the game, and a lot of gamers have touted as bad and actually have them banned from certain servers, on the PC version anyway. The two perks in question are Martyrdom and Last Stand, and the weapon is a Grenade Launcher attachment, aptly named the “noob tube’.

So what exactly makes these features so bad? Well, Martyrdom for starters drops a live grenade when you die, so essentially people near you or running towards your corpse shortly after death will experience the pain of an exploding testicle (come on, dead people can’t drop live grenades, must be some kind of pacemaker). It’s more a punishment for not watching or listening to your surroundings, as when martyrdom happens, it’s fairly obvious. Last Stand on the other hand doesn’t actually let you die when you’re taken down, you actually stay down still alive, able to use the pistol, so you can take a guy out just before death, kind of like revenge. You die shortly after though, and they get the kill unless someone else shoots you while you’re grounded. The last is the grenade launcher attachment, which is basically a one hit kill when you’re hit by it and it has a fairly large explosion radius. Downside here though is that it only holds about 2 bullets, so it’s not all that bad.

See how I’m saying they’re not too bad? Well, news flash, they aren’t bad at all. My rage doesn’t go out towards the game, but the gamers who complain about things that you should be aware of in the first place. Martyrdom killing you? Figure out who’s dropping the exploding balls, and adapt to it by not approaching a body that just went limp. On hard core mode? Listen to the sound of it dropping, pretty easy to do unless you’re deaf. If Last Stand is taking you out... well, think quicker. When someone goes down, make a note that he is going to stay down. And once more, once you know who uses the perk, you adapt to his sneaky tactics, it’s simple.

And finally, the solution to the ‘noob tube’, one hated by many CoD4 gamers. It has like, 2 bullets. Why are you complaining about something that has 2 measly bullets? Yes, it hits hard, and has a good radius, but so do live grenades, the 10,000 airstrikes that happen in full matches, the helicopters that are basically aim bots and the list goes on. It can give you pretty easy kills, but why complain about something like that and claim it takes no skill? You’re playing to win right, not to be some fancy acrobat with tricky skills. No one cares how great your accuracy is, they’re there to play the game with the features it offers and have fun with it, not the features you dictate should be played with. There’s being a good player, then there’s just being a sore and egotistical loser.

I personally don’t use either of the perks or the grenade launcher, it’s not my style, but I don’t really care if anyone actually uses it in a match. I just attempt to adapt to their play style, much like how people try and adapt to my crack-induced super fast SMG style. That’s what makes the Multiplayer fun really: the fact that everyone plays differently, it’s called diversity.

And that sums up my love to hate rage fest, though it’s a little different considering I’m raging about the community of a game rather than the game itself. But that’s tough love for you.

Until next time fellow haters and lovers, unlimited power!

nice article Denny, sums up how i feel about them too.
i do use last stand though, usually getting a couple of kills before i die, once even getting a 5 kill streak in last stand, but its all just for fun.
but also you forgot to add if you dont like last stand then a headshot will take care of that (atleast i thought it did, its been a little while since i took notice)
but the noob tube and martydom and also juggernaught im really getting sick of people crying over them, i play hardcore most of the time so that usually gets rid of martydom and juggernaught, and the noob tube seemed to had eventually been replaced by the rocket launcher later in the games life (on the ps3 anyway)

Agreed......good article.

Don't have a problem with RPG's as they are a weapon everyone can access. My dislike is once you get past the UAV where is the skill in calling airstrikes and the chopper.I would prefer having the UAV longer to allow me to stalk and kill the enemy.
Martyrdom and last stand don't really add anything to the gameplay and are worse in small maps where lots of kills are happening. My biggest dislike was emptying clip after clip into a guy without him dropping and then have him run 20m and stab me or a team mate for an instant kill.

Those videos were funny but the audio was terrible. I can see why people complain, most of those kills were against static/predictable targets.

Sometimes when I get bored of playing properly; I like to just go one of the lmg's and attatch a scope and wait for someone to pick it up off me and go

WTF SCOPE ON A LMG?

Brightens my day just that little bit more.

Also using noob tubes + marty. Love how 'pros' flame the ***** out of you for using them, to which I'll usually just reply with 'zzz'; furthering enraging them.

i love matyrdom.

it's so stupid that people actually get caught by it.

i love being at a LAN when my exploding testicle gets someone. there's not usually a great deal of rage, just /facepalm.

i don't really get the Last Stand rage.
i'll readily admit that i'm a noob when it comes to MW, but even i know to put an extra few into everyone i take take down, just in case.

i must admit there is a few times that i go ape $%& about martydom, either when im playing headquarters and they run in a kill them and i have nowhere to run, or when i sneek up on a sniper hiding in a corner and i knife him then for some reason cant get away fast enough.
but nothing im going to abuse someone else about.

Noob-tube? We prefer to call it the pro-pipe in my circles icon_wink.gif.

Canetoad's Guide to Inducing Rage in American PUB Stars
Get a party up and join an American match, M16 w/noob-tube + Overkill + M4/AK w/noob-tube + martyrdom/last stand. Pretty much raaape. Hearing them rage is like sweet candy to the ears.

Or the old M16 w/noob-tube or P90 (w/3xstun) + Juggernaut + Last Stand and join a normal TDM or Domo game.

The perfect domo class for Shipment consists of AK74u, Frag x 3, Sonic Boom, Martyrdom. Proceed to throw all three 'nades as soon as you spawn, maybe get an airstrike or spray the 74u across the map to get a few more kills, die, kill someone with martyrdom and respawn, call in a chopper, repeat for a 15 minute match and you've probably made the whole other team rage quit while your k/d is something like 150-3.

I never use any of that normally but I find it funny when people in S&D games get tubed off spawn and go rank. How **** stupid must you be? If you hear the "doog" of the tube run the **** out of the way, you know by now where the spawn-tubes are gonna land, adapt so it doesn't hit you. Team downs off spawn with an across map pro-pipe on Pipeline = my greatest achievement.

When I'm not off making people rage in pub I much prefer a competitive ruleset without perks/pro-pipes/P90s/74u, hardcore mode with half-health (so not one-shot-kills) and slow regen. After 31 days online of pub I get sick of playing properly after a couple of rounds of S&D or whatever and will go have a private match or Cybergamer PUG (pick-up game) with those rules. A much more enjoyable game which actually showcases reflexes and accuracy over power which is what I personally like to see. Requires a lot more teamwork, strats and communication than just the general run and gun nature of the game. Hope MW2 has a bare-bones or pro-mod playlist on 360. Apparently IW have been in talks with MLG about incorporating an MLG ruleset playlist which would eliminate all of those so called annoying perks so those ragers should be happy. Obviously the person who just plays CoD4 for fun and to get the highest score possible won't feel the same as someone who plays it competitively and would prefer to just play with what the game gave them against the general public.

Pub is still fun though and I say if you can't beat them, join them. They'll either see how annoying/unbalanced the perk is and change their habits, or everyone will stay there and it will all balance out leaving you with no reason to complain.

Wish 360 was more customisable though as I'd love to play to rules akin to those in many PC servers but to be honest, I just hate keyboard and mouse (yes, I know, wtf is he on but it's true).

Ok, i gotta say, Noob tubes are a pain, mostly because the type of people who use them die shortly after using them anyways, so they instantly have another 2 shots.

As for last stand, i will admit to being a big user, and im good at it. Nothing like using the desert eagle to take out that sniper who winged you before you die.

Clearly we have very different perceptions on why these things may or may not be acceptable. To me it's not just everyone wanting to have fun. There are those there for fun, but then there are the narcissisic egoists who do whatever it takes just to have the most kills for the sake of having the most kills.

I admit that I have been inattentive enough to be caught by martydom, but my issue with it is when you turn a corner and get caught by it, or more frustratingly, during a huge gang bang of a firefight where there are many bodies and and a lot of noise.

But last stand is the bees knees of cheap death cheats. It's terrible if you snipe someone and have them fall to last stand behind something where you can't finish them off. There are also the one on ones where you might win with a sliver of health left only to find out the fights not over, these last standers are like a final boss from Final Fantasy!

Helicopters aren't really a problem since I like to stick to the RPD with whatever perk it is that make you stronger. I can usually take down a chopper on my own with half a magazine.

THE most annoying people though are not ones who abuse perks or weapons, but ones who abuse microphone priveleges, yes I'm looking at you young American boys, STFU or GTFO.

Final comment, the most anxious times of my life have always been sitting on that sixth kill.
