Ubisoft announces Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

PALGN News | Due for release in May 2010.
Ubisoft has officially announced the existence of a new entry in their venerable Prince of Persia franchise, subtitled The Forgotten Sands.

According to the press release published over at VG247, the title will mark a return to the storyline established by the Sands of Time trilogy and is in development for 'consoles and handhelds'. Specific details have been thin on the ground, although the press release does suggest that a number of 'fan-favorite elements from the original series' will be present alongside a host of 'new gameplay innovations'.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is due for release in May 2010, presumably alongside the film adaptation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (directed by Mike Newell and produced by industry giant Jerry Bruckheimer).

Good news as far as i'm concerned. I have a irrational hatred of the 08 Prince of Persia game. Just about everything about it bothered me and felt watered down.
Suppose i should hold my excitment back untill there are more details on it though.

Yeah, I enjoyed the latest one but much preferred the original trilogy.

Nah, the last truly epic PoP game was the port of the original onto the SNES.

These modern games just don't cut as a good a jib.

YEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!

But wait, lol they are ditching the new prince of persia format and going back to the old trilogy? wtf? Silly idea but at least a PoP will be out next year!

They need to bring back one hit kill traps, and refrain form reviving you immediately after. If you get sliced by a blade the size of an elephant you should be dead, none of this piss farting around the newer games have been going on with.

What's with the dislike for the new PoP? One of my favourite games of last year and had one of the best endings EVER. I'm really looking forward to seeing where they take this. But that's me I suppose icon_smile.gif

Anywho, this news isn't so great imo. The PoP movie is due out in May, and the movie is based on the Sands of Time trilogy. So... this is going to end up being a movie tie-in.

Certainly pumping these ones out. I haven't played any of them yet...

Personally, I really liked Prince of Persia (2008) despite its many faults.

I thought, much like Assassin's Creed, that it was an imperfect game with loads of potential which would have a much-improved sequel.

I, for one, hope they don't abandon the new Prince of Persia. I'm invested in the characters now, gosh darn it.

Don't get me wrong Jeremy, I actually thought that the 2008 game was a step above the Sands trilogy, and towards the end of the game the reviving didn't actually mean squat as you'd be thrown back about 5 minutes of acrobatics.

Oh and yes, the ending was freaking awesome.

I agree with Michael as well, that a sequel is going to be absolutely fantastic and I can't wait to see what they come up with for the light/dark Prince.

Oh right... the Pop movie, that makes sense! Well... it will probably suck then lol

I just hope the get back onto working on the new Pop series, because it rocked

The 2008 game pretty much left it wide open for a sequel. I wonder what direction they're going with here.

Sin, your first post actually snuck in while I was writing mine icon_razz.gif

But yeah, now I know I'm not alone in some of my sentiments icon_smile.gif And after the game and the epilogue, it's pretty much guaranteed that there will be a 2008 sequel. My informed guesstimate is for Christmas 2010.

One of my favourite games is the PoP: Sands of Time so horray. The 08' game had the worst ending I have ever seen, and while I like the characters well enough I disliked the controls. Bring back the difficulty!

Heh, we're pretty differnet then, probably my least favourite (haven't played Warriors Within though) was Sands of Time. The camera frustrated me to no end and the puzzles, from memory, were incredibly simple (even that dungeon, though awesome, was still incredibly easy and it was literally just going in the one direction for about 10 minutes). Also there was no sense of danger because none of the blade traps killed me, they just took off a little life.

Well I was young and I remember it being hard, if I played it now I would probably fly right through it but storywise it's hard to beat. That twist at the end is excellent.

SoT was pretty easy, but i found the 08 game to be easier, with the exception of some of the poor platforming action (mainly based around the magic plates and camera), and from what i remember, there wasn't any puzzels at all. Combat was boring, a glorfied quicktime event with the bosses, and regular enemies at the end. And i never felt like i was in danger thanks to Elika. I hear people comment she fills the role of the sands, but her powers come across as limitless in the gameplay. You could run out of Sands, and there were parts in each game of the SoT trilogy where you didn't have them at all.

Yes, redemption, but even when you ran out of sands and fell to your doom, the screen would fade to black and you would be placed a couple of minutes from wherever you died.

In Prince of Perisa 2008, they decided to forego the boring, hackneyed old 'Game Over' screen and put you straight back into it. Not really that much difference, apart from the 'feeling' of danger, I suppose.

It replaced it from the beginning of the map/level to the last ledge you were on. Hence once you nailed something you were done, while in past games once you nailed something you would have a few more to go with each putting more emphasis for if you failed you would have to start again. While it took away frustration it also took away challenge

Suppose your right. I normaly found a game over screen as a moment to reflect on what you did wrong. But like i said in my first post, my hatred for the 08 game is just irrational.

I loved 2008's Prince of Persia unconditionally, but I'm glad they aren't going to be continuing it. The ending is one of the best in the entirety of gaming, and I can't help but think that any continuation is just going to water it down. I've never played the Epilogue DLC for that very reason. That final shot of the game, before the credits roll, was the perfect ending.

As for this new one, I can't find any care in my cup. I'm not interested in Prince of Persia: The Official Game of the Movie of the Game, and I'm not especially familiar with the Sands of Time Trilogy. I adored Sands of Time, but I only played Warrior Within for about an hour before deciding I didn't want to pollute my memories of its predecessor by continuing. And I heard the third game was better, but I can't bring myself to play a series out of order, and since I won't be playing the second game that leaves the third forever out of my reach.

a game, based on a movie based on a game, based on a different game?

that's gotta be some kind of record, no?

Street Fighter: The Movie (the arcade game or home video game) is about the same if you accept the SF movie is based on SF2 or higher which are the progeny of the original SF game.

That's a great precedent for how good Forgotten Sands might be icon_wink.gif

With all this cynicism, I'm having this strange premonition of this game being surprisingly good. I remember what happened when Batman: Arkham Asylum was announced...

I really enjoyed the 2008 game too. I also loved Sands of Time, the other two in the trilogy were OK, but not as enjoyable for me.

The Epilogue DLC for the 2008 game kinda spoiled things for me though. After really enjoying the main game, the way the difficulty spiked up in the DLC stopped it being fun I found. Although now everyone's going on about the ending...and I can't remember what happened icon_smile.gif
