EveryonePlays: PALGN and GAME join forces

PALGN Feature | The journey towards an R18+ rating, has only just begun.
To the PALGN Audience,

From the PALGN Admin team: Jeremy, Roland and James

Some games are played by everyone, but some are only meant for those over 18.

Sunday 28 February 2010 is the closing date for the public to submit their views on the R18+ classification, through the Attorney-General’s discussion paper. If you haven't done yours already, check this article out while you still have the chance... However, this is only the beginning.

We are pleased to announce that PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME have joined forces to keep this debate alive – the journey continues. The debate over the R18+ classification has a long way to go before all State Attorney-Generals agree to amend the current legislation. PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME are in it for the long haul.

So how can you help?

Visit the new Everyoneplays website, click on the link to find the nearest GAME store and sign a very simple petition…

From 28 February, all the way up until 30 April, you’ll have a chance to sign the following petition:

Quote:
“As of today, Australia does not have an R18+ classification for PC and video games.
This has resulted in many games receiving a lower classification than they otherwise would.
By signing this petition you believe that Australia should have an R18+ classification for PC and video games.”

Head to the new Everyoneplays website here.

Find your nearest GAME store by clicking here.

By heading down to GAME from the 28th onwards and signing the petition, you will have your chance to show that gaming is a legitimate form of entertainment just like literature, TV and film. And once you’ve been down to GAME and signed the petition, you can also let everyone else know about it. In the coming days, we'll be providing you with information on how else you'll be able to help us spread the word. We have the potential to get something really BIG happening here, but we won't be able to do it without the collective force of everyone.

You can follow the process from start through finish, as we'll be keeping you up-to-date the whole way. We'll be giving you regular progress and milestone updates. Also, we'll be providing you with a whole set of features, talking about petitions, opponents to the R18+ rating and the ins-and-outs of banned games. And that's only the start of it.

So, made your submission? Ready to sign the petition? Ready to tell everyone about it? The more people we have to spread the word and visit a GAME store to sign our petition, the more leverage we’ll have over our politicians. So it is up to us – to act now and make a difference!

There is still a long way to go, but PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME will be here every step of the way. However, we won’t be able to do it without the support of each and every one of you. For anyone who has ever picked up a game controller or bought a game for anyones else, now is the chance for you to have your say and we hope that you will join us!

EDIT: Sorry, been informed that I shouldn't say that. You didn't see anything...

Anyway, these are really, two seperate campaigns, so there is nothing (well, at least not legally) wrong with signing both.

Wasn't the EB one specifically for the discussion paper though?
This is over and above that I think...

::EDIT::
Or maybe not, judging from Jeremy has just posted whilst I was typing!

Dsiappointed that this is the big wait for. To be honest I'm not really huge for the idea of R rated games. I don't care if it happens or not

Does it matter if you're a couple of years younger than 18? I'll happily go in and sign it if i'm able to, knowing that it'll benefit me in a couple of years time.

I mean I will vote for it to make R Rating games legal but I think with Governments there's bigger fish to fry. What type of games will we see if it was legal? Just blood baths/porn games?

EB and GAME are just using this moment to promote themselves by talking up the debate. What smart people can do is show the government what measures can be in place to protect the R rated games from underage gamers which I think is what they fear most. Palgn is hoping on for the ride of promotion with the game businesses.

Hey folks,

We've been working on this campaign for well over 12 months now. It all started when a few of the PALGN writers decided to start a petition in our booth at eGames 08. It was a hit and from there we've been pushing to do this on the much larger scale speaking to a much more mainstream audience.

A LOT of work has gone into getting all the parties involved in this one! I'm really excited to see it coming together. We've had a lot of battles along the way (hence Jeremy's delete post), but I'm glad it's all coming together. It's fantastic that GAME have decided to put so much into this. Really, their commitment has blown me away.

This is big. We're putting a lot into making a message that the people who's minds we need to change can understand. BUT we need your help as well. We need help getting this viral. It launches on the day the submission papers close for a reason. We need to keep putting pressure on the government to get something done. We don't want to wait another year while the submissions sit in a dark closet.

Make sure you get into a GAME store and sign the petition. Make sure you let people know about the campaign. This is seriously important. It will make a difference.

Yes, it makes us look good doing this, but trust me, if that was the only reason, it's not worth the effort. We're not doing this half-arsed... physical petitions, strong message, mainstream media - it will make a huge difference.

Also GAME are taking a risk in doing this... there were a LOT of companies who chickened out... getting involved with a political campaign isn't at the top of most people's marketing lists.

I prefer my limerick idea. Oh well, one day the rhyming revolution will come!!!!

So are PALGN, Everyoneplays and GAME just uniting on the R18+ issue, or is PALGN now a subsidiary of GAME?

It has to be more than the standard petition rubbish that you hear on every topic. You need to offer a case that is better than the other side. Why would R Rated games be good for Australia? You need to answer that one, sure 50k names looks nice but Minsters have a paper shredder in each office.
