The game's director, Shinji Mikami, the esteemed designer and creator of classics like Capcom's Resident Evil, explains in an interview with Eurogamer that the decision to forgo multiplayer modes in Vanquish was made with a view to ensuring the core, single-player experience was not compromised.
'When you take [the game's intense action] into a multiplayer environment,' said Mikami, 'then you have to realistically consider shaving a lot of things off and putting them into your multiplayer environment.'
According to Mikami, PlatinumGames is wary of including a lacklustre multiplayer mode simply for the sake of it: 'It kind of boils down to whether you have the multiplayer but you don't have that much impact, and end up being like everyone else. Or even below par,' he said. 'So that's the main reason we're keeping Vanquish as a single-player experience - to deliver the level of impact, the level of detail and the visuals we want to offer.'
Given that Vanquish is a third-person shooter which bears some fundamental similarities with genre heavyweight Gears of War, it is surprising that the ubiquitous, seemingly-mandated multiplayer modes won't be on offer.
PALGN will have more on the rather exciting-looking Vanquish in the lead up to its release later this year.
