PlatinumGames' Vanquish to be a single-player experience

PALGN News | Third-person shooter eschews multiplayer options.
PlatinumGames has announced that its Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 title Vanquish is set to remain a single-player experience devoid of the expected multiplayer component.

The game's director, Shinji Mikami, the esteemed designer and creator of classics like Capcom's Resident Evil, explains in an interview with Eurogamer that the decision to forgo multiplayer modes in Vanquish was made with a view to ensuring the core, single-player experience was not compromised.

'When you take [the game's intense action] into a multiplayer environment,' said Mikami, 'then you have to realistically consider shaving a lot of things off and putting them into your multiplayer environment.'

According to Mikami, PlatinumGames is wary of including a lacklustre multiplayer mode simply for the sake of it: 'It kind of boils down to whether you have the multiplayer but you don't have that much impact, and end up being like everyone else. Or even below par,' he said. 'So that's the main reason we're keeping Vanquish as a single-player experience - to deliver the level of impact, the level of detail and the visuals we want to offer.'

Given that Vanquish is a third-person shooter which bears some fundamental similarities with genre heavyweight Gears of War, it is surprising that the ubiquitous, seemingly-mandated multiplayer modes won't be on offer.

PALGN will have more on the rather exciting-looking Vanquish in the lead up to its release later this year.

I think this is far; given games haven't always been MP and shouldn't have to be. With that said I could quote Yahtzee's review of Borderlands about how a game should be able to stand up on the single player merits alone.

Cool. I'm not particuarly excited for Vanquish for some absurd reason, but knowing its single player only definitely increases my interest.

Inherently games are single player constructs, it's a faux effort to consider multiplayer gaming as a platform since by extension multiplyer as it stands now is simply "many single players" and applied to said single player constructs. A game which doesn't stand on these constructs and instead prides of the extension, you'll most commonly find flutter in the market. People buy because it's pretty, they buy because its fun, play a few times and then move on to the next title which struts past like a peacock.

A core component of the games which play well consistently is that the emphasis on a single player construct is far superior to those who focus on the multiplayer alone.

I'll buy anything Platinum do. Single player only makes all the better.

So long as they don't include Multiplayer soon after release as paid DLC it's fine. They will be able to concentrate on really polishing the single player game.

When you are competing with games like MW2 and Halo, you have to really do something amazing to win any serious multiplayer volume. If single player really does stack up i don't see a problem.
It seems the older you get the worse you get at multiplayer. Maybe it's a reflex thing. But mostly probably a time thing. The older you get the more distractions in life you have so you can no longer spend hours upon hours perfecting your game.

Anyhoo, I've long been a 'single player only' gamer so this is good news.
