God of War 3 had a $44 million budget

PALGN News | Money makes Kratos angry.
Blockbuster video games today often have budgets that can rival Hollywood films. God of War III is no exception, with Max Console reporting that the game cost $44 million to make.

However, to put this into perspective, this isn’t anywhere near the most expensive game ever made according to figures released by Digital Battle. That honour belongs to GTA IV with an estimated budget of $100 million. Even Killzone 2 as the 10th most expensive game had an estimated budget of $45 million, a million higher than the third outing of cranky Kratos.

44 million? That would only get 1 Michael Bay explosion scene.

All the reviews and the leaked first 10 minutes (in german which is even more hardcore) seems to point at yes, this game is awesome.

Shenmue – $70 million
Man, and Shenmue tanked horribly. Didn't even come close to breaking even. Its a shame because Shenmue is pretty much defunct. It really was worth every penny.

Two Human went through a massive amount of devolopment time over about three or four consoles. It was announced in 1999, for the first Playstation, for God's sake - it's amazing it was ever released at all. The large cost is because it's essentially the cost of three games to start development on three consoles, so in that perspective it only cost as much as an ordinary blockbuster game.

This list only surprises me in that Shenmue is still third after twelve years. That's amazing...

I wonder how much money got sunk into Duke Nukem Forever over its twelve-ish years of development...
