Rock Band 3 announced

PALGN News | A music revolution?
Viacom President and CEO Philippe Dauman has officially announced that Rock Band 3 will be released this holiday season, despite the fact that Rock Band 2 has never officially been released in Australia. Mr Dauman revealed the game while speaking at the Credit Suisse Group Global Media and Communications Conference.

On the game’s Facebook page, the latest update reads: “Harmonix is developing Rock Band 3 for worldwide release this holiday season! The game, which will be published by MTV Games and distributed by Electronic Arts, will innovate and revolutionize the music genre once again, just as Harmonix did with the original Rock Band, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band. Stay tuned for more details!"

It will be interesting to see what Harmonix has planned to evolve the ailing music genre. There has been some speculation that the next iteration will feature more realistic instruments. However, according to a report in VGChartz, another game has beaten them to the punch, with Power Gig: Rise of the Sixstring shipping with a ¾ sized, six stringed guitar. We will keep you updated as more information comes to hand.

Wonder what they'll do with this one. One thing is almost guaranteed though, it will be good. Hopefully it actually gets an Australian release though, as I would like to get a new guitar one day.

It will be interesting to see how they achieve this. Not all that much has really changed since Guitar Hero 2. Looking forward to more details.

Just sounds like marketing spin to me

Well Rock Band was a huge change from the previous music games, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

and EA signs new distribution deal, because we down here in Aus know how well they distributed rock band 2.

The stock **** with the Beatles instrument packs was a fairly bad sign too. The way EA have handled Rock Band in Australia makes me think they almost wanted to cede the music game market to Activision by default.

Adding in the drums and mic completely changed the game from just guitar, and made it much more of a party game. If they didn't, we might still be playing just guitar games, which would have gotten extremely boring by now.

I recently gave up hope of seeing Rock Band 2 getting a local release, so i ordered it online..... might bite the bullet and do it for RB 3 upon it's release.

Although logic says that it should come out, i mean they gave RB: Beatles and Lego: Rock Band a local release granted they were reduced to be cleared soon after (over the last 3 months the Beatles band kits were severely reduced from their $350 - $399 price point to $99 - $150 at some stores, and Lego Rock Band has been sold for $30 - $49 over the last month and a bit).

logic also says that rock band 1 shouldn't have been a year late and rock band 2 should be out

Haha yeah icon_smile.gif,

i was more speaking of the release of the beatles + lego rock band, being relatively "on time" with the rest of the world. Compared to the delay of rock band, and the non release of rock band 2.

After seeing how badly EA handled Rock Band I scored an overseas copy of RB2 in Dec 08 (didn't arrive till early Jan but still).

I think shipping costs will be to much to justify an import so I may check out this Power Gig as I will not wait for Guitar Hero to play catch up because I am still not giving my money to Activision until they get rid of Bobby Kotick.

I just ordered off CDWow, it cost around $80 including postage on the UK launch, buying it in Australia wouldn't be much less.

Power Gig does look kinda cool, but you never know, maybe Rock Band 3 will do the same as that. I mainly play Rock Band for the drums anyway.

I feel for EA, I really do.

First of all, they flinched. That was a mistake -- They worried about the lack of potential market support here. Remember: Costs of business in peripherals is high. They're not manufacturing them locally, so they all need to be shipped in, and they're large units. Hence, they flinched. They held back, tried to find other costing models, and...

And then Guitar Hero: World Tour hit. Suddenly, the game with the biggest name recognition had the concept first.

EA put out Rock Band, but only half-heartedly. Of course they did. They knew it was dead in the water by this point.

And the sales numbers came in, and proved it.

Now, of course, they thought The Beatles might change that. It … sorta did. But the numbers weren't very good either, because the whole market downturned.

So, y'know? I can't blame EA for much after that first flinch. That was a mistake, but an understandable one.

Frankly? It's very poor business sense of EA to push Rock Band out here.

Was only a few months ago in Adelaide where K-mart were selling 3-instrument/game Rock Band combos for $50. Ended up paying $17 for a Rock Band drum kit to use instead of the horrible GHWT one.

All the more reason just to import from the UK for Rock Band 2 is that you can still import all the songs from your Aus copies of RB1 and LRB into RB2.

I'd presume most people in the know were aware that Harmonix came up with the band idea first and were working on it while GH3 was coming out.

Really is it? We got all the RB1 instruments that the US no longer wanted or needed when they got RB2. They may have had either had a huge supply they needed to get rid of. Or they may have decided that it was worthwhile keeping the factory lines running to supply AU once the US demand died down.

Meh, Rock Band 1 was arse (no bass career = P.O.S.), never got to play 2 because, you know, we didn't get it. Have very little interest in this one... unless it has a kazoo, that would be mega awesome.
Bass is heaps more boring than guitar anyway. And RB2 had a heaps better career than the first, and you could play bass on it. In fact, you could play anything and still have the same progress, is pretty awesome.

Les Claypool begs to differ.

RB2 means nothing to me, it didn't come out here so it isn't a factor in the conversation. If RB3 has a decent set list (and actually has a realistic styled drumkit) I'll be all for it, but EA/Harmonix haven't really done much in the past to please me.

I doubt they would change the drumset much, it's good enough anyway. If you want a realistic drum set your going to have to buy the Ion drums.

I think there could be a improvement in allowing people to Specifically say there doing both Vocals and there instrument of choice, and in turn, remove the Tambourine/clapping bits.
And alternately, Make those Tambourine bits more interesting with motion controls. Allow the players on the PS3/Wii to use there controller in those bits.
And also, add a Piano/Keyboard. Rock Band needs more Elton John.

All I'd want are cymbal pads, 4 toms doesn't equate to a good drum feel.

You can buy cymbals for the Rock Band 2 drums.
