Switzerland to ban violent games

PALGN News | Possible blanket ban on the production, distribution and sale of violent games.
European gaming site MCV is reporting that new laws passed in Switzerland by the Swiss National Council may vest substantial powers in its relevant authorities to impose measures to regulate the sale, distribution and production of games deemed to be unsuitable on account of violence or cruelty.

According to MCV, German gaming site Gamesmarkt is reporting that the full implications of the ruling will not be known until the regulatory framework has been settled.

Given that the original motion in support of the new legislation had proposed a blanket ban on any game which 'requires cruel acts of violence against humans and humanlike creatures for in-game success,' it is likely that any game which earns a classification of PEGI 16+ or PEGI 18+ will be banned from being sold in Switzerland.

PALGN will update this story as it develops, most likely when the particulars of the legislation and accompanying regulations are finalised and made public.

^^ looks like it.

Oh crap, have our calls for a R18+ rating backfired? Instead of Australian getting it, is the rest of the world comforming to our current system.

NOOOO, not what we want to happen.

Yeah, good luck Switzerland.

This is not good news for our gaming buddies over in Switzerland. I hope they can rally local support against these laws, just like we have done here in Australia. The latest happenings here prove that the regular person on the street can make enough noise to make the government listen.

This is terrible news. Most of all it sets a precedence for other unreasonable governments to follow.

All they need to do is like drive for 3 hours one way, cross the border and stock up on those games, its not good but it would suck more if it was australia

I believe Switzerland has had a lot of problems with racial tensions etc recently, and is only being made worse with the right wingers in power. Sounds like a good old fashion scapegoat has been found...
