Three big surprises from Valve

PALGN News | Newell opens the excitement valve.
Big things are on the way from developer Valve according to CVG, with big boss Gabe Newell delivering the titillating news that his company has three big surprises coming over at least the next twelve months. Sadly, in typical Valve fashion, Newell refused to offer any hints as to what these surprises will entail, other than stating that 'people will be shocked again'.

A history of keeping a tight lid on things is not unusual for Valve, with the latest surprise being Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3, a platform that, until then, had been panned by Newell for its difficult programming platform.

Valve's known projects at this point include Portal 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 3, something secret from Defense of the Ancients developer 'IceFrog', and the seemingly endless updates for Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2. The secrets may have something to do with any of these titles, or they may be about something else entirely. Counter Strike 2? Something for the Wii? A film? Valve has, in the past, mentioned all of these things to some degree, though who really knows what is going on behind closed doors.

Why not post your speculation in the comments?

If any other company other than Blizzard gave an announcement about a future announcement I wouldn't give a stuff, but since it's Valve and we've had Portal 2 (and Left 4 Dead 3 would just be cruel) I'm going to sit and salivate over an Episode 3 announcement incoming.

My hope is that ep3 will be released for free to owners of The Orange Box and that Half Life 3 will be available for Christmas.

Minecraft getting a Steam release and some development grunt help from Valve is fairly certain.

DotA is due for a reveal at some point too, probably sometime next year when it is well and truly cooked.

I would say one of these must be Episode 3... But I remember the last time there was an announcement of an announcement it just turned out to be about Portal 2 coming to the PS3... I got really excited about that because everyone made it sound like it was going to be something huge, and it was such a rubbish announcement icon_lol.gif So I will try not to get my hopes up again!

Damn i love valve, for the simple fact that they call updates/patches, "updates", and don't charge you for it, compared to most other developers/publishers calling updates/patches, "DLC".

yuck no. while the wiimote would be alright for controls, i seriously doubt the wii could handle all the physics calculations required. and why ds? 3ds isn't that far away.

If my old peice of **** PC could run portal fine I'm sure Wii wouldn't have a problem.

The only thing my old pc ever had a problem with was, strangley enough the sliding platforms that would lag me up heaps.

NS2 is a separate company that formed from the mod group, Unknown Worlds. You could play the Alpha now if you pre-ordered before the end of July. Looks to be a long way off but progressing better than most mods have recently.

An Episode 3 announcement would be great motivation for me to finally get around to finishing ep2.

I may as well throw my predictions out there...

Sure thing: Portal 2 for iPad.
Long shot: Blue Shift 2
Extreme long shot: Another compilation release similar to Orange Box, including Portal 2 + HL2 E3 + Blue Shift 2. It will be called "Blue Box"

Cliffski.com">Here are some things valve could do, that really are surprises.

1) They could convert steam to a subscription model. All current steam games free, to all subscribers. Subscription is $20 a month, a revenue split is worked out with the developers.

2) They could launch a TV or Movie based venture. Maybe an online streamed TV station based on gaming. They aim to become the #1 global media source for games news.

3) They could strike a deal where steam is integrated into the service pack for windows 7. Steam becomes the new games explorer, installed on every windows PC.
^ I like the way this guy thinks
