PALGN's Periodical Rumour Harvest #19

PALGN Feature | Three words. Street. Fighter. Four.
A few months ago Capcom held a focus group discussion on their US website with fighting game fans. They asked questions to find out what the fans wanted and expected in their Capcom fighting games. The results can be summarised as:

- 2D over 3D graphics (for Street Fighter and in general for fighting games)

- Online play in some form in future fighting games (Not relevant to arcade games obviously!)

- When asked if the next Street Fighter game should use Viewtiful Joe type cel-shading, about half said that was ok.

- When specifically asked what was wanted for the next Street Fighter game, a popular suggestion was a large cast of characters, with a theme song for every character.

2007 will be the 20th anniversary of Street Fighter.

Well, this week Capcom has announced that they will be showing off a new arcade fighting game at the 'Amusement Machine Show' in Japan September 1. No news there, right? Capcom are surley just going to do another cross over game, or manga tie in like they're always doing, right?

Well, the announcement comes after weeks of leaks and speculation on message boards around the world, including an alleged list of the games Capcom will show. Many games on the list are previously announced games, including joint venture games with Nintendo Super Mario: Fushigi no Korokoro Party 2 and Donkey Kong Jungle Fever. But the list also contains those magical words - Street Fighter 4!

The news has both excited and worried Street Fighter fans, as Capcom has a history of not doing what the fans expect. In the past this has worked out well (The refined genius of Street Fighter 3) and not so well (the limp re-hash in Capcom Fighting Jam). But either way, fighting game communities are on fire with speculation.

A poster on leading fighting game forum Shoryuken.com claims to have inside information about the upcoming game. The post claims:

1) Street Fighter 4 will in fact be 2D

2) Ryu will be the only (classic) returning character

3) They have begun to work on it

4) The game will come out when Capcom celbrates SF's 20th Anniversary, which wont be till 2007.

5) The 2D Animation will rival most animated shows or movies

6) Mel Masters (Ken's son) will make an appearence

6) Based on a leaked concept sketch, Ryu will have a new unshevelled look. Some concept sketches show him unshaven.

Can Street Fighter 4 match the greatness of 3rd Strike?

Is it all true? We'll only have to wait a few days to find out!

Three words:
I. Don't. Care.

doesn't the rumour harvest usually collate multiple rumours pertaining to different games (or devices or hardware)?

bleh

disappointed with this harvest...

If you don't care, then don't post.

Usually, yes they do collate articles - but if there's one significant piece of news, we put it up straight away, rather than let it waste away.

And this is utterly fantastic - although, topping Third Strike will be tough. * crosses fingers *

Yeah obs, i was looking for some sort of 'lol' or 'j/k'...

Anyway-i reckon its fantastic news!I dont mind the fact this rumour harvest centres upon only one game, especially if said game is as classic, or as big a milestone as the streetfighter series.

I certainly wouldnt call myself a hardcore fan or anything but i just plain love playing street fighter.

2d is the way to go ive said it from day one.2d, generally, just has a clean, uncluttered, stylistic look to it and for one i think it lets fighting games(especially) focus on just that-fighting-rather than trying to sidestep/roll/moonwalk around your opponent(though 3d graphics on a 2d plane ala ssbm would be cool too).

Im sorta saddened though by the lack of any of the older characters(bar ryu).....i do realise its time to move on and time for new personas and characters to take the limelight but its hard saying 'goodbye' to old friends lol....

I think they should have kept a few more 'key' old school characters in such as....guile, sagat, blanka etc, but then again i see if they done it this way it would be IMPOSSIBLE to keep everyone happy and just turn out to be a huge whinge fest.

Maybe its a good thing they remain in our memories and old jamma boards/carts.

Will be watching this one.I pray, i pray they do the name, nay, the LEGEND of 'streetfighter' justice(talking with hardcores one on one is an excellent way to start! icon_smile.gif ).

Ryu is the only classic character returning? So much for M. Bison and Chun Li then.

I'll stand up and be counted with Ob for vehemently not caring.

Personally I cannot think of anything more boring than giving each character a theme song.

Really, you don't care?

Fantastic, because I don't care that you don't care.

Come on guys ease up eh?

Theres tons of games and tons of articles/updates that i really couldnt give two hoots about-but i dont go and post on the topic that 'i-dont-care'.It just sounded out-and-out rude to say that after David, or any other writer for that matter, went to the trouble of bringing us said article.

Like fair enough-its not up your alley-thats cool-but youve, inadvertenely or otherwise, really started the conversation off on a bad foot.

Need for speed most wanted images, gran turisimo 5 details, etc(all recent articles) i really have no interest in but you dont see me bringing the whole conversation down with negative comments.

So carn guys, ease up, have some beers post/discuss things in topics that interest you icon_smile.gif

OK,
Sorry for being rude.
But the one thing that made the previous rumour harvests so good was that they looked at more than one rumour. This news is important for fighting game fans but boring for the rest, even if the title said "street fighter special" or something like that just to differenciate between the Rumour harvests that look at lots from the ones that only cover one game.

Keep in mind everyone, these are just rumours! It's not necesarily true that only Ryu will return! Not to mention that the rumours suggest it won't be out, even in arcades, for almost 2 years......

For game set for 2007 release, it is going to have to be spectacular 2D as 3D technology would by then look incredible. I think that it is risky for them to not use 3D. Although they might use 3D but render it as 2D.

Be interesting to see what they can do with this one. Like has been said, a 2007 release would require some pretty special graphics and hopefully some cool new features...

David, did you mean Rye will be 'dishevelled' instead of 'unshevelled'?

We are oh so sorry you are dissapointed. It was a rumour and it was harvested. Whether you or Obs care or not is out of our control, so stop complaining.

yeah i guess i'm sorry for coming across rudely, i had a sh!t of a day and was generally pretty p!ssed off at everything by the time i read this article...

and the blurb line just got to me...

but i stand by my opinions...

no, i don't care about SF4... the first three were sh!t IMO, i don't expect this to be any different, especially if they're trying for the same gameplay style...

i usually enjoy reading the Rumour Harvest since there are usually several interesting leads and glibs of information... so when it was all to do with SF4, made my day that little bit worse... had it been an article titled only about SF4, i probably wouldn't have snapped so badly...

feel free to not care that i don't care... it's not as if i care that you care really... or something...
