January Preview

PALGN News | Fancy a peak at our front page redesign?
January signals the beginning of the year. In the gaming world it is a relatively slow period for gamers, with no big releases coming out for any of the consoles or handhelds. Fortunately this gives all of us here at PALGN some time to catch up on the mad christmas rush.

We've decided to make January a memorable month, even if there isn't much happening in the way of games releases. This month we're going to be taking a close look at the Xbox 360. With less than three months until the console is out in Australia, one of our european staff members has his own Xbox 360 and is ready to talk about the good, the bad and the damn right ugly. If you're still on the fence when deciding to buy an Xbox 360 then our hardware review should be an eye opener.

PALGN's much anticipated home page redesign will be launching at the end of this week and we've decided to give you a quick glimpse into how things will look. We're very excited about the redesign because not only will it bring us up to next gen standards, but it will also make it far easier to navigate through our latest content. Below are a few teaser images to wet your appetite.

Our first image is a close up of part of the featured section where we will post the most important articles that we publish. This section is written in flash and is fully interactive. Along with its icon each featured article will have its own specially created featured image included in the display (not shown here).

The right section of the top header is now in flash in order to solve the nasty anti-analysing issue that we have currently on the navigation links. We've also added a search bar so you can look quickly find the article on PALGN that you're looking for.

Our third image is the most revealing. It showcases what is going to be on display down the page. The article list has been split with news and rumours on one side and features, reviews and previews on the other.

Finally, there has also been a lot of work done on the backend. Our media processing tools have been updated such that you should expect to find far more media (and of a higher quality) listed with each article. We've also fixed the painful distortion issue that has plagued our media thumbnails.

There are still a few days of development left to go, so the design is subject to change but please feel free to let us know what you think of what we've unveiled in the forums. We've got a few other things planned for January including another competition, but we'll reveal more on this later on in the month.

i wanted to post a picture saying "Sexy", but google only returned images NSFW, so i'll have to do it in text instead.

looks pretty tight, Luke. i'd still like to see some thumbnails. perhaps a certain icon that indicates a game review. what i mean is on the latest news page if it has 'kirviy canvas curse review' have a DS review icon next to it, and have PS2 and Xbox icons as well. then thered be ones for the features, competitions, etc.

i'd also like to see the game section have the game review out of 10, along with the genre and the rest of it. along with that, you should be able to order it in preference of best review to worst review. thats a feature i like about other gaming sites.

.....Plain as an arrow-root biscuit.

Nah haha, just love that saying.Looks quite good from what i can see.Palgn's simplisctic(in a a good way) looks are a breath of fresh air from other sites where you are constantly bombarded by pop-ups asking you to participate in 'quick surveys' or fight an oncoming seizure induced by one of the 10 or so active ad's flashing away.

hah cant wait to see it! Like Jibbs said, the layout is good because its simple and easy to navigate but I think a little bit of color could liven it up a bit icon_biggrin.gif Very exciting.

Change is always good, as long as it's done well....

I'm excited it appears like it will come off well.

Looks good to me but I will post my proper impressions of it once we see the final thing. As long as you keep it simple and effective then that is all I really care about. icon_smile.gif
