Family Guy games coming soon

PALGN News | It had to happen eventually.
2K Games have today announced that they have managed to accquire the exclusive video game rights to the Family Guy series. They've handed off development duties to High Voltage software, who will be working closely with series creator Seth MacFarlane. While there's no specific details yet, it seems that the game will centre around Peter, Brian and Stewie.

"The irreverent and satirical Family Guy humour that has made the show a smash hit opens up exciting and untapped possibilities in game development," boasted Christoph Hartmann, Managing Director of 2K Games. "We are looking forward to bringing the colourful Family Guy characters to life in a one-of-a-kind action/adventure style game."

...And that's about all we know at this point in time. No destination consoles or any game details have been announced. More as it develops.

can't be any worse than The Simpsons, Futurama or South Park games... could it?

One of a kind, yeah... right...

While I love the show I will not hold my breath for the game.

Simpsons hit and run was better than most gta clones icon_wink.gif Maybe there is a little hope.

Blasphemy. The Simpsons games on the NES (well, most of them) were great. The Simpsons: Hit & Run was damn near brilliant.

I like the Futurama game too yo.

there are exceptions to every rule. (except this one.)

the only simpsons games i've liked were Hit and Run, and the Arcade game.

Simpsons Arcade was excellent. It's unbelievable how much money I spent on that when I went to TimeZone back in the day.

There better be a "make this joke go 5 minutes too long" minigame.

And Simpsons Hit & Run was near brilliant? You've gotta be kiding me. The arcade game was pretty nice, though.

Yeah I said it - damn near brilliant.

As a fan of the show I enjoyed the storyline, references and in jokes.

As a fan of games I loved the variety of missions, the freedom to explore almost every corner of the city and just the overall fun feel to everything.

I'm not saying it deserves a spot in the top ten games of all time or anything, but it was a nice break from some of the more complicated games in my collection. The main thing is it never got boring.

I liked the simpsons road rage. Sure it was a huge crazy taxi rip off, but it gave me hours of fun and laughs.

Can't be worse than that southpark game on '64. I remember playing multiplayer for it at my friends many a blue moon ago. Sad times icon_razz.gif

Really? For me, as a fan of the Simpsons I also enjoyed the jokes, references and the story (sort of), and the way they used such obscure references for things. I particularly loved the choice of costumes (It has Floreda Lisa for crying out loud! Why there was never a figure made of that I'll never know) and cars (Hover Bike, Zombie Car, Car Built for Homer, etc, and especially some of the secret cars - Knightboat, Rocket Car, etc).

But as a fan of games I felt the game had way too many problems. The supposed freedom was ruined by the fact you could only go inside about 6 buildings (and in the case of the Simpsons house, only the living room and Bart's room).

And then there was my main problem - its too damn repetitive. Theres so much potential in the Simpsons universe - why make us drive around all the damn time, collecting x and going y, or occasionally going from y to z, avoiding x along the way? Hell, the last 3 missions were basically the exact same thing, they just reduced the time limit and swapped from 'follow this car' to 'race this car'.

I dunno if you've played Virtual Springfield, but that had some nice distracting minigames that could have worked so well in this game to break up the tedium. Why allow us to watch a clip of Larry the Looter when we could play it, as VS allowed us to? Hell, they could have just picked up a Mario Party game and stolen all the mini-games, but put them in a Simpsons context and I would have loved it.

I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one ("I don't agree to that" "Me neither"), since I found it to be quite boring by the end.

First off, yes simpsons arcade owns!Man, that was one of THE most fun brawlers i have EVER played.God that was begging for a snes or md port....it was just so mad.I hope this isn't the nostalgia tlaking though....

You mis-spelt 'most'.It should read ' n o n e ' not ' m o s t ' icon_razz.gif

Seriously though they sucked. They were the definitive cash cow games for the nes.I vividly remember playing attack of the space mutants and 'Bart meets radioactive man' and they were both terribly programmed excuses for games.

The first level of mutants didn't even make any sense, all that stupid spraying everything purple, almost every item needed some inventive way of turning purple but the only way to do so was to try every possible thing imagineable, usually dying over and over until something, for no apparent reason and which you would have never guessed to have worked .....DID work.Man, does that sound like every nes game ever made or what lol?

Btw don't even mention the collision detection for bart and the mutants, apparently Bart dies from a mutant touching his 'aura' which extends a foot out from around him, let alone any physical contact.

You may sway me on that time warpy simpsons game on the snes, that was alrightttttttt, but not the nes games.Terrible.

Think of the kids! The game had to reach across age groups to get that money, knowwhatimsayin? icon_wink.gif Even better, think of the whole game as one giant mini game. I know what you mean and I agree, but the kid in me loved it.

Man, I know what you mean... but the sense of accomplishment I felt when I beat Mutants back then as a kid was massive. Seriously, I had to work my ass off for it - didn't even think it was possible. Same with Bart vs The World, not the best game by any stretch of the imagination. I didn't have a disposable income like I do now so I was stuck with the game I bought because it was Simpsons related. Played them to death so now they hold a special place in my gaming history. If you gave up at the first level because you didn't get it I can see why you would hate it. On a technical level I can see why it can be hated.

But you can never take my memories from me!!!! icon_razz.gif

I've played both the simspons and TMNT beat em ups recently, and they really don't stack up well, its is just nostalgia getting the better of you.

Apart from the obvious Final Fight and Streets of rage 2/3 I think the best games in the genre back then were Alien vs Predator and The Punisher. They happen to be licenced games as well, but they've really put the effort in to make them much more than just cash ins.

As for Family Guy, I love the show, got all the DVDs, but this does sound like another cash-in to me. Here's a list of the games made by High Voltage software in the past:

Personally I can't really get behind any of them. They range from shocking to average imo.

I'm feelin that(to theory).^

I got lumped with aero the acrobat for snes.It wasn't that bad actually.......but others say it was.But again, beggars can't be choosey and it had a face only a mother could love(translation- it had gameplay only a kid who had nothing else to play could enjoy).

I can see what you're saying, sure, but even so I'm not so sure they even succeeded doing that, though, since I know my cousins (who are currently 6 and 10) have the game and could not complete alot of the missions. Yes, they could skip missions (and did - a hell of alot) but the game seems stuck between being too hard for kids and being too easy for adults/gamers. And regardless of difficulty, the game just isn't fun alot of the time.

And besides, even little kids need to experience good gaming, which is why I have no problem lending Yoshi's Island to them - they might as well start with the best. icon_wink.gif

i've played many of those old arcade games recently, and thought they were all still pretty schmick.

none beat X-Men though, but they were (and are) great fun.

i can still see myself plugging a fair amount of money into the machine even now. and in the case of XMen, i still give it a whirl whenever i goto the movies.

I'm just not feeling the Konami beat em ups. They tend to not have the 'walk up and grab' mechanic that capcom games always implement. There are a couple of konami games closer to the capcom formula (sailor moon on snes) but the popular ones, xmen, tmnt, simpsons, they're basically just attack and jump. They don't even have dash moves or run, which should have been standard ever since golden axe.

They had (more) style and charm then the final fights and such of the day though.

You raise some good points though...
Yeah they definately had more style and charm. The enemies and backgrounds were just beautiful, and it felt like you were controlling a real cartoon. I like to play them once in a while to just look and see all the work that was put in, but I can't help but think how bad the gameplay is compared to your average 'beat up all the punks' capcom/sega game.
Was batman returns for snes a konami game?I think it was.....that was a great beat-em up, good enviromental interactivity, the grab(dual grabs even and you could crack the punks head together icon_razz.gif ) and all sorts of other goodies. It was quite 'final fighty' though, even right down to the enemy health bars that changed colours as it dropped.
Yeah I know the one, it is a konami game. Can't say I've played it though.

Just thinking, I have a feeling that for some reason the snes games were better than the arcade ones. I mean the arcade games always looks a hell of a lot better, but the snes ones always seemed to have more moves. I'm basing this on sailor moon and TMNT turtles in time, but as you say, batman returns had more moves than the konami arcade games. It may be because it was a different internal developer, or maybe just experience with time, I'm not sure.

They were some funny days tho, every franchise had its 16-bit beat em up. I don't think I'll ever get sick of them =)
