Top Five Fridays: Gaming Characters

PALGN Feature | Our staff pick their favourites.
Welcome to PALGN's newest fortnightly Friday piece, the top five Fridays. Every second Friday we'll be choosing a topic for our staff to vote on. We thought we'd start off nice and easy with our top five gaming characters. As this is a personal article it is based on our personal preference, but if your favourite character didn't make the cut then feel free to let us know of your opinions in the forums. As usual we'd appreciate any feedback on this feature, so if you have any insults, complaints or virtual spit then sling it towards the article topic.

It's hard to believe, but in the 90s gaming characters were a huge part of gaming. Of course Mario and Sonic are amongst the most memorable mascots but there was also Bubsy, Cool Spot, Alex Kidd, Gex, Croc, Bonk and more. Whilst it may seem like the idea of using a gaming character to promote a title is now defunct, gaming characters are just as popular now. Some recent examples include Lara Croft, Sly Cooper, Master Chief, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank and Crash Bandicoot.

We asked our staff what their five top gaming characters of all time were. After some bickering and verbal slinging matches we came up with our top five gaming characters of all time.

5: Sonic the Hedgehog

The popularity of Sonic the Hedgehog may have waned in recent years but in the 90s Sonic was one of the most recognisable mascots in gaming. Despite the fact that the hedgehog's recent games have been really poor there is no doubting that Sonic is still extremely popular. Artist Naoto Ōshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka are credited to designing the fast hedgehog whose soul purpose at the time was to take on Mario. Back in the 90's there really were only two mascots who mattered in gaming - Mario and Sonic, and depending on your console of choice you'd stand behind your mascot's games as if they were your best friends. 15 years after Sonic's original debut, the blue hedgehog has appeared in comics, cartoons, books and games. Sonic's next appearance is in the promising Sonic and the Secret Rings.

4: Solid Snake

Solid Snake originally debuted in 1987 in the Metal Gear titles, which are created by Hideo Kojima. When Metal Gear Solid was released on the PSOne back in 1998 Solid Snake became a recognisable mascot almost instantly. Since the aforementioned title debuted, every new Metal Gear title has been highly anticipated by eager gamers. Despite Solid Snake's popularity he wasn't playable for a long time in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and players controlled Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Solid Snake only makes a cameo appearance in the Snake vs. Monkey minigame. Solid Snake will return once again for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots but in this game he looks to be edging towards retirement. The Metal Gear Acid titles for the PSP both feature Snake, but are side stories set in a parallel universe, the games are also card based battling games. Whether we see Solid Snake in Guns of the Patriots this year is still unknown but he will be making an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so gamers looking for a Solid Snake fix will at least get a chance to beat Samus in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Why would you want to beat Samus? Well she pegged third spot, that's why.

3: Samus Aran:
The original Metroid game, which debuted in 1986, originally painted Samus Aran as a male cyborg. However, at the end of the game it was revealed that Samus was actually a female, a shock that we're only just getting over twenty years later. Samus may seem like a character that has appeared in a lot of titles but there was a large gap between her appearance in Super Metroid (1994) and Metroid Prime (2002). Since then Samus has appeared in a sequel to Metroid Prime and two DS games, Metroid Prime Pinball and Metroid Prime Hunters. In fact, a demo for Metroid Prime Hunters was included with the first batch of Nintendo DS consoles. Samus makes a return later this year in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii. Corruption was originally expected to be available at the launch of the Wii but was delayed until March 2007. Unfortunately it appears that the game has undergone another delay, so the title should be out before the end of the year.

2: Link:
Link only just missed out on being our favourite mascot of all time and looking back at his history it's not hard to tell why. Link is another one of Nintendo's most popular franchises, although he doesn't appear in as many games as Mario. Link first appeared in 1986 in The Legend of Zelda. In the Zelda titles you'll generally need to journey through Hyrule to save Zelda from Ganon. Link's latest appearance was in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess which was one of the best launch titles for the Wii and is one of the last GameCube titles released. Unlike Mario, Link very rarely appears in titles other than The Legend of Zelda games. Link appears as a bonus character in the GameCube version of Soul Calibur II and is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros series. Link's next appearance will be in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, which is set for release on the Nintendo DS in the last quarter of the year.

1: Mario
There really should be no surprises about our number one mascot here at PALGN. Mario is one of the most successful franchises of all time and unlike Sonic, whose games have degenerated in quality recently, the Mario titles are solid, enjoyable games. Mario's latest 2D platformer game New Super Mario Bros was well received critically and commercially and Super Mario 64 is still considered by many as one of the best games of all time. Mario's catchphrase of "It's a-me, Mario" is recognisable to just about every gamer worldwide. Surprisingly, Mario has only appeared in a few platformers in the past twenty five years but this hasn't stopped him appearing on over 100 games - in fact Mario can be found racing a kart, playing tennis, golf, basketball, soccer and snowboarding. Ironically Mario actually started off being known as Jumpman in the Donkey Kong arcade game but his name was changed in Donkey Kong Junior. Mario mania was so high during the 90's that there was plenty of Mario branded merchandise including pinball games, comic series, books, puzzles and stickers. In 1993 a Super Mario Bros film was released and Mario has also appeared in other television shows. Mario has also had the honour of appearing on every Nintendo platform since his debut.

Is that cause you guys are pro-nintendo? icon_razz.gif jokes jokes jokes i love you guys jokes jokes don't flame me jokes don't ban me jokes jokes it had to be said jokes.

My take:
How can a fat, dorky, italian plumber dominate the gaming world for all these years. The 80's I can understand but people aren't retarded like that anymore.

The ommision of Master Chief is absolutely criminial. He has just as much worth as Snake and Samus.

I think Kratos will be up there in a few years. He the most original gaming character ever.

Of course its all in my opinion.

Okay my top five , not in any particular order.

1.Ben - Full Throttle

2. Daxter

3. Dante

4. Solid Snake

5. Sonic

Master Chief isn't there because he doesn't have 4+ games under his belt. The best gaming characters IMO are ones you create yourself, so characters in WoW, (w/r)RPGs, etc. should be #1.
What about the King of All Cosmos and the Prince? Their omission saddens me.
Duke baby we can't forget the Duke!
Good call on Ben segax
Dante is just a bit too .... umm... pretty
The prince is king.
Kratos may become a Kretin - lets leave him out for now.

Classics become so for a reason, as NSMB is still on the top 10 for 7-8 months now just shows that over 2 decades the fat plumber still dominates

Other considerations would include (on an all time basis) include Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Alex Kidd, Pac-Man and Leon Kennedy

Master Cheif has only been in 2 games, plus personally I find him a little bland, if anyone from Halo was going to get on a fave list it would be Cortana (she rocks)

"We've run out of feature ideas- let's write up a generic, predictable list!"

I'm pretty sure my Mum could have guessed that top 5.
Where's Dracula?

Funnily enough Solid Snake is about the only one there who has much of a personality. The rest say nothing or very little.

Good point, which proves that it's the characters design, as well as the gameplay that determines whether a character is successful, not the dialog so much.

That was a rather predictable list, but a good feature all the same. At least it proves you guys are working hard. icon_smile.gif

Mario is probably most iconic video game character, but not my favourite.

My favourite would be:

5) Sonic

4) Albert Whesker

3) Pyramid Head from Silent hill

2) Ouedan guys

1) Phoenix Wright

Can't say I disagree here. Perhaps the order (I love Sonic). Also I don't like Snake that much, my experience of him in MGS3 was that he has some kind of metal object shoved up his arse from the way he talks.

Hmm.. I guess you didn't mention Rayman. Though overall I admit he hasn't made such an impact. Recent Icons like the Prince from PoP deserve mentions, as well as Ratchet and Clank, I loved the adult undertones in the characters, it worked well with the cartoony setting.

We could have included alot more or expanded the article to the top 50 but that'd get a bit boring after a while (Luke would probably explode from trying to write something for each one).

I voted for Rayman as I've always liked the character design and quirkiness of the series, although my number one was Sonic (big suprise there).

My top 5, in no particular order: -

Kratos (God of War)

Clank / Daxter (Both hillarious sidekicks)

Leon (Re4)

Tony Hawk

Crash Bandicoot

If there was ever a least favourite character list salazar from RE4 and Neo Cortex would be in there.

This reads more like a 'most popular' list rather than a 'best of.'

Makoto from Enchanted Arms should win.

I understand why Mario & Sonic gets the vote because they are both iconic. These are simple cartoony characters with a low amount of graphic detail but highly identifiable qualities. In this sense most of the suggested alternatives fail the litmus test.

My top 5 video game characters are as follows:

1. Mario (Super Mario series)

2. Luigi (Super Mario series)

3. Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island series)

4. Sam 'n' Max (Sam 'n' Max series)

5. Donkey Kong (Donkey Kong series)

Whoa talk about generic.

Snake was the only mildly left field one;even then he's hardly obscure or non-mainstream.

My Top 5

The Prince (Katamari)
Duke Nukum
Link
Sonic
Mario

I think it would be worth drawing up a list of 'top 5 adventure game characters' or possibly 'story based/driven gaming characters’.

As mentioned by Kaboth, the entries in this top 5 (I have mentally labeled it an “action top 5”) have very little dialogue. It’s hard to compare them with Guybrush Threepwood, Larry Laffer, April Ryan, Roger Wilco and the like. Adventure game characters are portrayed in such depth as they make their way through their worlds that I feel that any comparison to action characters is unbalanced.

I have met real world encounters where I find analyzing them from an adventure game characters perspective and finding the solution they would be most agreeable to. It probably just means I’ve heard them say “I can’t do that/these two items don’t work together/its out of my reach” to many time to maintain true sanity icon_wink.gif

One other aspect I noted is that this current top 5 only features playable characters. Maybe PALGN intend to do villains and sidekicks as separate lists?
Yes, very generic indeed the list. But what else would be expected from franchises that have been so popular?

I say let there be a most ugly/non inspirational/generic characters of all time top 5.

Personally I would have liked to have seen the article have each staff member's top five listed before the tallied results.

For your own benefit (and yours alone), here's mine.

1. Sonic
2. NiGHTS
3. The Dragon from Panzer Dragoon
4. Ecco the Dolphin
5. Wonder Boy

In other words, a shameless Sega line-up... as opposed to a shameless Nintendo line-up. icon_lol.gif

If it makes any of you happier I didn't vote for Mario. I'm sick to death of that moustachiod punk.
