Day 7 - Bus to Phoenix

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Spent most of the day on the coach travelling from California (San Diego) to Arizona (Phoenix).

Day 6 - San Diego

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Spent most of the Day at the San Diego Zoo. Meet one of my cousins in the evening and got a personal tour of the city which was cool. Made these thumbs small since there's lots of them (and these are just a small sample).

Day 5 - Tijuana & San Diego

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Contiki tour started today - it's awesome. Much easier to travel a view the sights with someone who knows what they're doing. Everyone is about my age too, so it's a great crowd.

Going into Tijuana was a great experience. And no I didn't drink the water.

We also took a boat tour in the San Deigo bay.

Day 4 - Disneyland

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Verdict: Better than Universal (more rides), but way too many little kids
Best Attraction: The Hollywood Tower & a huge roller coaster they have in the California Adventure park.

There are two parks in the Disneyland resort. There's the original Disneyland Park and opposite is the California Adventure park that has more 'action' rides. We got a pass to do both in one day which turned out to be perfect since we managed to fit everything in by 7pm.

Day 3 - Universal Studios

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

Verdict: Pretty cool
Best Attraction: The Mummy Ride

Updates?

Saturday, April 29th, 2006

As you can tell from the lack of updates I've been having far too much fun and far too little spare time (and for the last two days no wifi) to be able to write stuff here. Things will improve when I get back to LA on the May 6th.

In the meantime you'll have to make do with a series of photo-centric updates. Sorry :)

American Oddities #2 - Bums

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

The lack of a safety net in the US means that there is a lot more homeless people on the streets than in Australia. The result is actually somewhat surprising.

Due to increased competition in the 'bum industry', in order to survive the homeless need to be more creative. Instead of just sitting down like in Australia many of them come up to you try to start a conversation. They might first give you some advice if you seem lost or try to make you laugh.

The one disconcerting thing about this is that it's actually quite hard to tell if a person is homeless or not just by their clothes. Most of the bums seem reasonably well dressed and when you combine this with the US culture of wearing bagging clothes it becomes impossible (for me) to tell the difference.
