More Ninty Pics plus other crap

Wednesday, May 10th, 2006

Given that we seemed to be in the stratosphere of the Kodak Theater, these pics didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I'll still put them up for your viewing pleasure. I should also take this opportunity to say that being at that conference and seeing the legend that is Shigeru Miyamoto in the flesh was one experience I'll never forget. It was a total adrenaline rush! Anyway, check these pics out.

And now for the afformentioned 'other crap'. What you'll find is here is a collection of weird and wonderful things we saw on our way to and from the Kodak Theater. There's also a couple of pics from our after conference lunch at the Johnny Rocket diner. Bon Appetite!

American Oddities #2 - Bums

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

The lack of a safety net in the US means that there is a lot more homeless people on the streets than in Australia. The result is actually somewhat surprising.

Due to increased competition in the 'bum industry', in order to survive the homeless need to be more creative. Instead of just sitting down like in Australia many of them come up to you try to start a conversation. They might first give you some advice if you seem lost or try to make you laugh.

The one disconcerting thing about this is that it's actually quite hard to tell if a person is homeless or not just by their clothes. Most of the bums seem reasonably well dressed and when you combine this with the US culture of wearing bagging clothes it becomes impossible (for me) to tell the difference.
