Dear GOD those designs look awful... Can't say much about the game itself yet, but whoever designed those characters should be shown the door (or hired on to do the next Pokemon movie).
8 years ago
Well the character designs fit into the series nicely and would you expect anything less than quirky from Amusement Vision, the people who brought us Monkeys in giant plastic balls.
8 years ago
Mmm... Monkeys in plastic balls... icon_drool.gif

The character designs weren't the best all the way back when F-Zero was released on the Snes. What did you expect them to do? Radically change the characters? They'd no doubt get mauled by the F-Zero fans and nostalgic reviewers alike.
8 years ago
Yeah, it would kill Nintendo to innovate, wouldn't it?

Seriously though, they did it with Zelda (or did they? It's still a sexually ambiguous elf in a green suit and cap... Hmmm...) why not F-Zero?

The characters look fine, but the ships/crafts on the other hand.... icon_eh.gif

And far too sexually ambiguous at that.

I might also add that Amusement Vision is developing it, not Nintendo. icon_razz.gif

And taking a look at that racer, probably both the characters AND the racers look stupid. But I don't care - when you find the speed you find in this game, you really shouldn't. And you, Wet Jimmy, once said Quantum Redshift was competition for this game.
8 years ago
You've obviously never played Quantum Redshift in Master or Redshift mode...
8 years ago
No, I haven't, but if Gamerankings is any indicator to go by, it seems to be a pretty ordinary game.

On the subject of craft design, did you notice the QR racers look like the F-Zero racers, only fatter? icon_confused.gif
8 years ago
You know my only beef with that game (aside from how damn hard it gets) is that there is no interaction with water - it's like they forgot to add it or something. I mean spalshes appear on the "tv" screen, but there's not a ripple, wave or splash in sight. Very odd.

Otherwise, though, as a racer with pickups it's a lot of fun, and pretty satisfying when you win a race at the harder difficulty levels.

Oh, and it sure is purrrty...

Your'e bagging out the F-Zero character models and pimping Quantum Redshift...!A generic futuristic racer at best with bog standard characters...

Although a futuristic racer without good characters is total rubbish, AV should can the release now icon_wink.gif

What would make QR better though would be the addition of some bouncy ladies icon_lol.gif
8 years ago
When you think about it, the bog-standard characters don't make a difference to any title unless you're one for the aforementioned bouncy ladies.

In the end, it's really the game - and no water effects? Dissapointing... icon_wink.gif icon_razz.gif

You're good at mis-reading and twisting posts to suit your needs, aren't you? Because you're a little dim-witted, let me recap for you.

I bagged F-Zero's character models, true. I can't say anything about the game itself, as it's not been released yet...

I then went on to say that I thought QR was a rather fun game.

Do you see any relation between comparisons? No? That's because there isn't one, aside from when you phrase your post the way you do. Why do you attempt to suggest that I'm putting down F-Zero for having bad models and elevating Quantum Redshift on that same category?

To summarise;

I'm not suggesting QR's models are worthy of any design awards, but that doesn't change the fact that F-Zero's characters just look plain silly. At the same time, QR is by no means a perfect game, but it's still a lot of fun. F-Zero, I can't judge, it's not released. I'm also interested to know that if you class Qunatum Redshift as being generic, what do you feel is innovative about F-Zero?

That's a bit rich coming from the guy that posted:

And don't come back with "it's gameplay, not graphics" because in this day and age, with the graphical power available, there's no excuse for sub-par graphics and healthy frame rates. Gameplay IS most important, but graphics come second on the list. IF you deny this fact, then you shouldn't be owning a current gen console because for simple gameplay, that Atari 2600 has it all.

You don't seem to have any problems with the bodgy character design of QR...

I'm not suggesting you are elevating QR's character models though, just pimping the game...The point is QR has cardboard cutout generic characters...You have enjoyed the game regardless, so obviously this isn't a concern for you-unless the title isn't on the xbox...

But we're talking about two different things - You're attempting to suggest that I'm saying Quantum Redshift compares in every aspect to F-Zero. If you were paying attention and had made any effort to actually follow the conversation, you'd notice the following - Cerebral Assassin made a comment that graphics, and design make no difference to the end result, and that when you see how fast F-Zero plays, it will all be worhtwhile. I then suggest that QR is pretty damned fast itself, and if it's speed we're talking about, I can't see how F-Zero can come across as being much faster than QR while being playable.

Anonymous wrote

Firstly, the article is highlighting F-Zero designs, not QR designs, hence the appropriate comments. Secondly -

Wet Jimmy wrote

- kind of suggests that I don't think the QR models are anything special, dooesn't it? But I DO feel that they're not as silly looks at the FZ models. They may be plain and human-looking, but I'll favour that over Batman with horns and hooves and Squid Boy...

Wow, you've got this real issue here, don't you? Again, I'll help you think it through - I enjoyed QR. I have not said that FZ will be good or bad - it's not out yet, haven't played it, can't say. I HAVE seen the character designs, though, thanks to the news post, and based on what I saw, I judged them to be silly.

If you're looking for an artificial comparison between games drawn purely from forum chatter, Cerebral mentioned that the key element of FZ is it's sheer speed and that quite some time ago when the first F-Zero screenshots were posted around the same time as QR was released, I mentioned that QR could offer competition in this regard. And having played QR in the high difficulty modes, I'd have to say that I'll be surprised if FZ offers much more in the way of convincing high speed racing. At no point there was I suggesting that FZ will be a failure, or not enjoyable, due to the character designs, and yet that is exactly what you suggest -

Well, you specifically labelled QR as being generic, but didn't include F-Zero in that comment - so from that I'd speculate that it's reasonable that you somehow feel F-Zero is different. Or is it simply stemming from your pathological need to state platform neutrality? It absolutely KILLS you to see someone favouring one platform over another, doesn't it?

Seriously, get the hint, don't come back. If you feel the need to vent your urges, I'm sure EDGE Online will love to have you.

No I'm not... QR has bland characters and according to you so does F-Zero ...This hasn't reduced your enjoyment of QR, although it does provide you with a soap box box to have a moan about a Nintendo title...

It's true I'm not on staff, but it was a purely voluntary rescission due to the fact that I do not feel I can commit the necessary time to write articles and reviews at this point. If you actually knew anything about the period of which I was a staffer other than through hearsay, you would have known that some of the reviews I had posted in the staff boards for others to review were in favour of the odd Gamecube title. Funnily enough, this renders -

inquisitor wrote

- your comment pretty obsolete. Now that I'm NOT representing the site, I can pretty much write what I like.

... but if we're talking pure hardware then yes, the Xbox "roxxors".

Zap! There goes Inquisitor's attempt at hurting my feelings!

And since you want to get personal...

Again, a shame. I hope they're up again soon though. You can take your intentionally misconstruing pedant nature back to the UK.

Tit for Tat, and all that kind of thing, Anyway;

inquisitor wrote

IF you were capable of properly construing the previous posts without bringing in your personal agenda, you would have picked up the following useful information;

a) The article was about F-Zero character design. I commented on the character design. I did not comment on the Gamecube. I did not comment on the game. I did not mention Quantum Redshift UNTIL someone else brought up an OLD conversation.

b) When QR WAS brought up by Cerebral Assassin, it was because, and I'm paraphrasing here, that F-Zero isn't about looks, it's about SPEED. And to this I say that after having played QR on the highest difficulty modes, I'd be surprised if F-Zero has a sense of speed that QR lacks.

c) If you were paying attention and not conveniently leaving out facts, you would have noted that I even CRTICISED the Xbox game.

And;

d) I did not blag the game, I did not blag the console, I did not "pimp" the Xbox.

So. I still don't believe that I've "moaned" about FZ in this thread, despite what you are (poorly) attempting to suggest.

Zing! There's the sound of Inquisitors point flying out the door...

inquisitor wrote

Again, I didn't state anything about a specific platform - this is again the case of Inquisitor not being able to comprehend the written word. If you were to ask ME what's boring and unnecessary, I'd say it's reading pretty much anything you've written thus far... As for artificially enhancing my enjoyment - are you kidding? No, wait, next you're going to call me 13 years old, right (purely rhetorical)?

inquisitor wrote

No, it just doesn't make sense for me to own all the consoles. It's certainly not a matter of cost. It's a matter of TIME. I just don't have the down time to play all those games. I own a PC, a Gamecube (JAP/US) and an Xbox (US). I've sold my DC, and I've never owned a PS2. Everything up to a DC I can emulate. I don't miss the DC because Shenmue 2 and Crazy Taxi is out for the `box. Soul Calibur II is also on the `box and since it's pretty much a zero innovation port of Soul Calibur, it's just as much fun as the original. The DC's best shooter (so I hear) is available for the Cube, but since it looks too hard for my liking, I think I'll give it a miss. So the DC WAS a great console, but it's not missed. I don't own a PS2 because most of what I want to play on it is either cross platform or gets ported to the PC (GTA:VC being the most recent example). I WOULD like to play Oni to see what the fuss was about, but it's no big deal - there are plenty of new games coming out every day. Is this being a console snob? No, I own multiple consoles. What it is being is REALISTIC in terms of the amount of time I have to spend playing games.

Kapow! Another of Inquisitors pointless observations down the can.

inquisitor wrote
One more from the classic Wet Jimmy vaults:
And you know what? I still stand by that. I can't recall WHY I mentioned that, but I think of it this way - the average age around here is probably 17-ish (guesstimating) and I know that MY point of view has changed a helluva lot since I was 17, and I'd be worried if it hadn't. I've been playing games for an awfully long time now, and I suspect that I'm looking at new titles through a different set of filters than someone who is ten years younger. Some titles probably excite me more, some probably less. I'm also, you will note, not suggesting that this makes someone right or wrong, instead it is suggesting why we may not see eye to eye on any given issue.

You would like to construe it otherwise, of course - but that's just who you are, so it can't be helped. I'm flattered that you had to dig through the old posts to find some mud to sling at me. Well done. You're like the retarded puppy that it's almost too mean to kick.

But since you seem determined to hang about, why do you post something about yourself so that we all know who we're talking to? It would be nice to think that there's something more to you than a nit-picking pedant with a penchant for proving their ability to ignore context in a purely text based forum.

Or, to get personal (as you seem so fond of doing) and to bring this to a level you will understand - I hope you get bowel cancer. It might take awhile, but it would mean that eventually you will cease to make your presence at this site known.

Inquisitor, you really have to let some things go. References to penis fixations should really have been left and isolated at the previous thread. Does this have to happen to every thread you two are involved in? The back-and-forth, half a page posts with about 15 quotes in them really derail some topics.

I know most of what you're saying is completely on-topic, but avoid using a topic as a cover to take shots at each other.
