POTW results: In with the new?

DS News | Do you want the DSi?
Last week, we asked if the new Nintendo DS model, the DSi, had the goods to replace your older DS model.

Well, the results are an interesting mixed bag. On the one hand, clearly, many are not inspired enough by the DSi to warrant a purchase (or extortionist trade-in deal): 51% do not plan on replacing their DS, while nearly 19% aren't inspired enough to start a DS collection. It's difficult to know real numbers, but it is possible to speculate that these results were influenced by the mid-week news that DSi games would be region-specific, a break from handheld tradition.

However, it's nevertheless interesting to note that there are at least 46 people out there (about 23%) willing to trade the old in for the new. If that sort of percentage was translated on a wider scale, the Nintendo bean-counters would surely be happy.

as i thought. most people who own a ds wouldn't see enough new to upgrade, unless they had a phat. And people who were planning to get a ds would've got one by now

the whole region locked issue needs some clearing up. Cammie said that Nintendo don't have any plans for retail DSi software and that DS import titles will still work. someone has to sitdown with Nintendo and get them to explain properly. i would take Cammie's word but she has the habit of not really knowing everything that's going on.

Thats true, the part thats region locked is the Nintendo DSi Shop, (or what ever it's called) it's equivalent to WiiWare, XLBA and PSN. Not sure about XBLA and PSN but WiiWare is region locked as well.

considering i own a ds and a ds lite, if there was a enticing trade in deal, like when i bought my lite then of course i would do it.

I think its way too late in the DS lifespan for this new version. 60 Million DS are already sold, unless there just doing this to upgrade the DS software ability then its understandable. But if there just doing this for profit....no point. Perhaps should of saved it for the next handheld???

Step 1: Print more DS's
Step 2: ?
Step 3: PROFIT (and the printing thereof of money).

Fixed. icon_smile.gif Seiously, I have phats and I still have no intention of buying a DSi, I really don't see it as being worth the money (or at the least, I can't afford to throw around that kind of money if it's not absolutely essential, I guess some people can though). It seems a lot of people just can't resist having the latest thing, even if it's only a slight variation of what they already have. Makes little sense to me, but people can spend their money however they want.

I went with "I do not plan on replacing my DS"
In this case I do intend to get a DSi.
Mind you the main reason for keeping my DS is I still play my GBA games, and I still want to keep them. Apart from that I'd get a DSi anyhows. Just gotta make sure to keep what I have also.

Ooh, good point. The poll does assume that the only people getting a DSi will be those trading in their old DS. Wonder how much that affected the results.

... probably not by much.

It'd effect it by more than one would expect however, unless the poll was multi choice it would then immediately negate one of the other responses as people would still be keeping their DS and getting a DSi, people will not be getting a DSi and instead getting all the trade ins cheap, + current options + just getting the DSi no strings attached where people might be doing all of the above.

"Hey I have a phat and I'm not getting DSi but I am going to replace it with the lite with all the trade ins which will happen" would then change the result dramatically.
