GTA: Chinatown Wars packing content for the DS

DS News | Apparently far bigger than PSP GTAs.
Gaming site 1up has uncovered the newest Grand Theft Auto game to hit a handheld will be the biggest one yet - far bigger than even past PSP GTA titles.

“Chinatown Wars is much bigger than anything we have ever done before [in terms of scope]: more odd jobs, deeper missions, and more moments of over-the-top action,” said Gordon Hall, president of Rockstar Leeds.

“We have a huge interaction with the Rockstar Social Club, a massive [narcotics trafficking] game that would stand alone on its own. The list goes on and on; this thing is huge. We are very proud of all of the PSP games we have made, especially the two GTA games, but this game is far bigger.”

GTA: Chinatown Wars will be released in Australia and New Zealand March 20th.

how the hell are they going to fit all that action onto a NDS screen? The processor won't be able to keep up will it? I thought they were pushing it using the PSP processor for Stories icon_razz.gif

Graphically, the game will of course not be able to hold up against the PSP.. and I doubt it will have full voice acting like the PSP games, so I can see where the memory could be used for more game modes..

That being said, DS carts do have the ability to actually be bigger than a UMD (which are capped out at 1.8gb) but it just costs too much money to make cartridges that big..

All in all, this games keeps on getting more promising, so am definitely looking forward to getting into some portable GTA action soon..

We had screens from a magazine scan a while ago, it's like a 3D isometric view with cell shading.

Burnz posted em over in the Nintendo forum

They're not talking about the visuals, but raw gameplay content. According to them this has more 'content' than the PSP versions.

It's really very ambitious of Rockstar to put so much effort into a DS game like this. When announced, the cynic in my had this pegged as a crappy port.

What I've seen so far I like. I'm still a fan of the old GTA visuals, and the isometric cel-shading they've got here coupled with 3D looks great. All the content they are adding seems to be a sign that Rockstar WANT this to be good.

No, actually. DS screenshots often do look meh to me but then a game pleasantly surprises visually. I think they look quite good and will be far better in motion... and there's still weeks of development time anyway.

The question is whether they were serious about deciding to do a Wii version only if this was a success.

If thats the case ill buy a DSi next yr

The first GTA looked nothing like that.

Sure, but to be fair it looked a hell of a lot more like that (pictured above) than any other GTA game post number two.

Save for a different HUD, the GBA version was like a mashup of vers. 1 and 2, which could easily be thrown into the same 'Top-down 2D' grouping, just like pretty much everything GTA after no. 3 could be chucked into the '3rd person 3D' category.

So bassically your saying that the statement the screenshots look **** is wrong as even though you yourself beleive that screenshots look **** but they might be better in game... say what? I never said the gameplay woudlnt look decent.

No he said that DS games in general usually don't look very good but this game suprised him because the screens actually look quite good and he believes that they will end up looking better in game.

Well his first line is a throw off none the less, sorry for the mix up. however I enterepreted as it was written that he disagreed with me on the basis that he thinks that most screens look 'meh' but the game looks better, which is infact what he says. So it all comes down to a matter of opinion, so

no, actually.

He said that often DS screens look **** but then the game general looks a lot better in real life.

I mean I just grabbed my DS and those screenshots are atleast twice the size of the DS's screen.

Also it's a **** DS, seriously. What do you expect?

1) DS screenshots always look awful. Usually games looks better in motion because they (often) have a good framerate (contrasted with PSP GTA, where the screenshots were better 'cause the framerate is bad).

2) These graphics do look a hell of a lot like GTA 1&2, and an isometric viewpoint and stylized cutscenes aren't going to change that. This game may have more missions, but judging entirely by the screenshots it looks like it has a lot less depth of gameplay than the new GTA games. When you think about all the best parts of San Andreas (I haven't played IV), you're inevitably left with stuff like flying planes, rooftop motorbike runs, holing up on the roof of a skyscraper with a bazooka and seeing how high you can get your star count... this is all stuff that would be impossible (or else simplified to the point of no longer really being fun) if not played in true 3D.

GTA 4 allready got rid of most of that stuff.

Also GTA 1 and 2 we're increddibly fun even without that stuff.

I have two words for you. Kill... and Frenzy. Nothing else need apply in terms of fun.

Oh, and bring back the Elvis's I say.
