E3 2009: Established RPG franchises returning to the DS

DS News | Golden Sun and Mario return to dual screen handheld.
RPG fans are in for a real treat, with Nintendo announcing at its E3 2009 conference that Golden Sun DS and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is in development.

Golden Sun DS marks the third game in the series. Not too much was revealed, but it will feature lush 3D worlds and is looking very promising.

The previously announced Mario & Luigi 3 also made an appearance, titled Mario & Luigi: Bower's Inside Story for its Western release. The game will see Mario and Luigi find themselves trapped inside the body of Bowser. While gamers explore the depths of Bower's gut as plumber duo, there will also be opportunities to control the Koopa King himself. The game appears to be visually similar to Partners in Time and will feature the series' trademark turn-based gameplay.

Golden Sun DS should hit retailers in 2010, while Mario & Luigi: Bower's Inside Story will be released in Q3 2009.

I'm so happy about Golden Sun DS. The first two are some of my all-time favourite games so this news is a dream come true. I can't believe it's actually happening, there have been so many rumours over the years and they always ended up being fake, but now it's REAL icon_smile.gif

More reason to want a DS. But I just can't stand looking at those tiny screens for more than 5 minutes.

All right, i have hoped for a new GS for ages. I loved the isometric view of the first 2 games, so this new art style may take some time to get used to. And woot for the english release of M&L:3 getting closer

Excited about both.

Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story looked heaps good so no worries there, but I would have liked a bit more on Golden Sun DS. Who is behind it for example? Fingers crossed it is still Camelot at the helm.

It has to be Camelot. There was an interview with them two years ago where they expressed their interest in making a new Golden Sun and "that the first two games were simply the prologue to the real event." Also, they admitted that Nintendo had asked them to do it. For months now we have known that Camelot was making an RPG, we just didn't know it was Golden Sun.

Some nice quotes from the interview:

Hiroyuki Takahashi wrote
First of all, I love that game and I love the world of Golden Sun. We think we have to make another one. We have to do it! Not just that we have to do it, but we want to do it. Nintendo has asked us to please make it. But at the same time we haven’t gotten around to making it. We’re not really sure why.
Hiroyuki Takahashi, on what console Golden Sun 3 would be appearing on wrote
Hiroyuki Takahashi: As a thought off the top of my head, if I could make something that would combine the handheld and the console – with the past and the future – if I could combine both of those that would be great. But that’s just a thought.
OK, so that boldened statement is important. There was a rumour ages ago that Camelot was making an RPG, but it was for Wii. With the announcement of Golden Sun DS, we might be in for a Wii game that can connect to the handheld version icon_smile.gif
