DSi XL release date announced

DS News | Aussies get it in April.
Nintendo have announced, via a press release, that their latest incarnation of the Nintendo DS will indeed be coming to Australia, and not that far into the future, either. The DSi XL will be released on 15 April 2010 in Australia, in burgundy and bronze colours.

For those not in the know, the DSi XL is a much larger version of the previously-released DSi, with two in-built cameras and the ability to download DSiWare games and take SD cards. Both screens are 4.2", with a wider viewing angle than other models, and the console comes with a bundle of pre-installed software including: Clubhouse Games - Express Card Classics, A Little Bit of... Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training: Arts Edition, Photo Clock and Flipnote Studio.

The thing about the XL is the larger screen doesn't run at a higher resolution.

Meaning a lower quality image, right?

But how much is it? More than the already horribly over-priced DSi?

No, it won't be lower quality, thats like comparing smaller tvs to bigger tvs both run at same resolution but the image quality is exactly the same on both sizes, it just means the image will appear bigger on the screen

Well a larger screen with the same resolution means each individual pixel will be larger in size, in other words the dot pitch/pixel pitch will be bigger, and the pixel density will be reduced. While pixel density is just one aspect of overall image quality, reducing pixel density will have a negative impact on image quality.

But thankfully for Nintendo most consumers will assume bigger is better, and buy one anyway.

Does anyone know how much this will cost in aussie shops?

I'm sort of confused, I'm waiting for a unit smaller than DSi before replacing my original behemoth DS. I guess this is targeting old people.

It's targeting older people while it's also pegging itself as a "community handheld console". Nintendo puts forth the argument that since the screen can open further than previous DS models, combined with its larger screen size, the XL will be bought by people interested in sharing their gameplay (link). Crazy talk if you ask me.

I just got a DSi (last month - couldn't say no to all the games) and I wouldn't enjoy a larger system. Firstly, I play it on the train and bus and I don't want everyone around me watching me. I also don't don't to have something bigger and heavier than a DSi in my bag.
