First Australian WiFi spot active

DS News | One out of fifteen so far.
If you visit this site, you'll be able to find the fifteen Australian locations planned to have Nintendo WiFi access by the end of the month. For the moment, the action is pretty quiet with only one site up and running in Victoria.

In all, there are 26 planned sites to be built in conjunction with retail stores. For whatever reason, Nintendo Australia have refrained from utilising McDonald's, unlike their US counterparts. It was never unreasonable to expect the locations to be centred around major cities, but given PALGN's demographic alone, a few groups are missing out. These being pretty much anyone from the outer or rural areas, anywhere from mid to northern parts of Queensland, the eastern suburbs of Sydney, the west of Melbourne as well as anyone in Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Still, the fact that there actually will be some places to take our DS units and part take in online multiplayer is nothing to be scoffed at, especially now that Mario Kart DS is now available. For those that are unfortunate enough to miss out, we will be bringing you information on the WiFi dongle being sold by Nintendo shortly, not to mention our own review of Mario Kart DS.

While I know everyone is has said this, it simply must be re-iterated that having wireless hotspots only at RETAIL GAMING STORES is freaking ridiculous.

Especially if the store is too small and has no place for people to sit down. At least at McDonald’s you could so that...

Looks like for now playing at home is the better option for those who have the internet connection.

It's a given Knox was going to be first, it is so close to Nintendo Australia.

Looks like if you don't have an EB near you, you have buckley's chance of getting free wifi... I wonder how many of these places have conveniently close cafes? icon_smile.gif

At least I have something to do while waiting in line for my Xbox 360 preorder! icon_lol.gif I walked past there last night and there wasn't even a sign up. Kinda stupid place to put a hot spot, that EB is tiny! probably only 4x6 metres, maybe a bit less.

Nintendo, what the hell. I thought you'd started to leave this sort of incompetance behind, but this is abotu as bad a decision as you've ever made. ARG.

Anyway, the dongle is great and all, but given Telstra's pathetic roll-out of broadband, it's not as accessible as it should be.

So TTP and Marion for SA, eh? I was expecting at least the city one as well.

At least EB at TTP is next to the food court. Hopefully it reaches far enough that I can have a game before and after my meal.

That's pretty groovy that QLD gets five...

Does anyone know exactly how far the signal will reach, because the Chermside store is one of the smallest EBs that I've ever come across and there is a seating area upstairs from it...and I could see me playing away up there

The DS Wifi has a maximum range of about 30 metres. And that's in ideal conditions

WTH, all the suburbs in NSW are so far away from where I live...
What's wrong with one in the city? Or Parrmatta?

I would love it if they made one in Burwood though, since the food court is just right in fort of it.

Macquarie Centre EB icon_biggrin.gif

I work at Macquarie and go to uni there too. Now... someone buy me a DS?

There better be a Wi-Fi spot in the Queen Street Mall in Brisbane.

Actually, that's probably possible, since there are chairs and stuff right out the door.

Of course, actually standing in there playing won't work - it's busy enough as it is without people standing around clogging it up.

Me and David live in the east, and there are big EB's in Eastgardens, Bondi and a massive on in pitt street mall and I haven't been to broadway but i heard it's not too miserly either.

Closest one i got is Ryde and thats an hour away.

It would be funny if they put one in centre point, because its a tiny Eb and being in the midst of food court is absolutely chockers most of the day.

Agreed with the CBD one.
Also, when you say the EB's big in Bondi etc.
Compareing to... let's say the CBD one. 4 times? 5 times?

If you mean the centre point one, Bondi is at least four times bigger than that one. While Eastgardens is between 2-3 times bigger and Moore Park is about 3 times bigger.

If it's big then is anything good up for sale there?

I was crazy enough to go in there a week before Christmas last year. I'm never doing that again. Or going to TTP at all just before Christmas, anyway (I forget who made me go).

The EB in Sydney CBD in the galleries victoria is pretty big (the one close to the JB store). It's like twice the size of a normal EB.
