Original DS to be phased out before Christmas

DS News | Handheld to have disppeared from shelves by September.
It won't be long before the current DS handheld will be dropped entirely from Nintendo's hardware line-up and replaced globally by the new, slimmer DS Lite system. That's according to Nintendo's US sales and marketing VP, Reggie Fils-Aime.

In an interview with Spike TV show Game Heads, Reggie said that August and September of this year would finally signal the end of the run for the current DS model, with the DS Lite set to launch in Japan on 3rd March and in North America and Europe at some point "after spring", according to Nintendo Japan officials.

In slightly less surprising news, Fils-Aime also used the interview to confirm that full details and a launch date for the firm's forthcoming Revolution console would be revealed at the E3 show in May (as was widely expected), and also insisted that the GameCube-bound Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will definitely, definitely, definitely be appearing in 2006. Honest.

I'm already looking at my DS with disgust. "It's **** massive," I keep thinking as I look at it's profile. To think that I once cared for this superceded peice of crap. I want a Lite! Nah not really, I'll cope.

Also, if you want to import a DS from Japan when it is released shortly, you will need to get some new fangled power converter, as it doesn't use the same one as the DS or SP. Not sure on the details but I would rather wait until it's released here to make sure everything is working properly.

That's interesting, sounds exactly like the GBA situation. This happened to me, I bought the original model on launch day, then the SP came and wiped it out. Looks like the same thing is going to happen again. History repeats, I guess. Oh well, I like the current DS, so I don't care too much. I liked the SP better than the original GBA though, but I never got one, couldn't justify the cost (it's not like it did anything it couldn't do).

All Nintendo power supplies are multi-voltage, all you need is a simple plug converter.

I'm pretty sure the DS Lite uses the Micro charger anyway, so if you don't want to use a converter you could proably pick up one of those for not all that much.

Lies!

I once (as in, recently) connected a US SNES to an Australian power socket without a power converter and something fried. Not good news.

It's like history is repeating. As the same happened to the GameBoy Advance when the updated GameBoy Advance SP was released. Now, the GameBoy Micro is replacing the GameBoy Advance SP.

That'll be the 1.5C fuse. I can fix it for you if you want.

Yeah get rid of the current DS. Whoevers got one should give it away to a younger brother/sister etc. It will be good use for them.. hopefully Nintendo has learnt that style is as important as substance in this material world. DS lite is trendy and sexy..I can forgive them for doing this, they are Nintendo , they are different.

When does everyone think the Lite will hit our shores? I want to buy one before August when I'm going overseas.

I'm guessing May-June, Nintendo have a history of big titles around that time.

Oh I hope it is earlier than that. That's around the time I will be getting my Xbox 360.

I'd never give my current one away, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. I already bought one for my bro anyway! lol icon_lol.gif
