E3 2006: Yoshi's Island 2 screens

DS News | Nintendo intent on keeping Mario fans poor.
Nintendo announced Yoshi's Island 2 for the DS at their press event, and the crowd went wild. Who wouldn't want a sequel to what many consider to be the greatest 2D platformer ever created? We already have the first screens, and even better - confirmation of a 2006 release.

Yoshi's Island 2 (apparently still a working title) will continue the adventures of the eponymous dinosaur, but is much more in the vein of the Super Nintendo original than the Yoshi spin-offs over the years, such as Yoshi's Story and Yoshi Touch and Go. It will be an action platformer set across both DS screens, and so far it seems the touch-screen will not be used at all. The story involves a mysterious floating island that has suddenly appeared over Yoshi's Island, and soon after a bunch of kids disappear from the Island's school. In a cannon-defining Mario event, it seems Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong and Peach were school chums at the island school, as all make appearances in baby form, and must team up with Yoshi to save the other kids and the island.

Super Princess Peach, New Super Mario Bros and now Yoshi's Island 2? It's just too much for this 2D Mario platformer loving writer to take! If a 2D Metroid for DS appears at any point, you may not hear from me again - I may just grab a DS lite and retreat to a cave for the next few years [what would your wife think about that, David? - Ed].

*hides in shame*

It was such a great game too icon_smile.gif

I'll definitely be buying the original Yoshi's Island on the Virtual Console, and I might get this DS one as well. So many great games, so little money...

I like how they went with old skool yoshi, i was not a fan of 'yoshi's story' yoshi.A bit stupid.

I never got to finsih it either....well technically I did but not fully. I got upto world 4 or 5 and my girlfriend was on world 5 or 6 (basically the last world) and she was stuck on the last stage and asked me to finish it while she watched sooo....yea I never played it again after finishing it for her.

You haven't fisnihed yoshi's island if 'hold select-x, x, y, b, a,' means nothing to you.

that's true, that was a fun mode! icon_biggrin.gif

I could never beat Bowser, where he throws things at you from the background icon_sad.gif.

This game has me very very excited - even more so than the announcement of NSMB (not long to wait now!).

Or you could just finish the game 100% like a real man.

:O McDavid i'll have you know i finished 100%, but the secret battle stages/2 player stages opened up by that code didn't count to any 100% total.

Don't worry about me, i collected my fair share of happy flowers and rebounded many-an-egg to stock up on starmen before i jumped through the end loop.

me too, I spent a while on that.

I didn't know there was soo much Yoshi Island love beein shared around, cool.

Speakin of completing it, did anyone (the first time they palayed it) get stuck in that 'Bonus' Level (not a mini-game) with the maze? Cause i can't find my way 2 the end, but i don't want to consult Gamefaqs, any want 2 offer a little help perhaps?

The game looks great, and i agree, old school Yoshi owns all!

Probably one of the earliest games I remember completing 100%! icon_biggrin.gif

2d gaming at its finest. I can't wait for this. The DS has been the best purchase I have made in a longgg time.

This was one of the big highlights of the conference for me while I was watching it last night. Awesome news and another game that I will definitely be purchasing for my DS Lite. The DS really is a must-have handheld now.

As for the Metroid comment in the article, what was Metroid: Dread all about then and was that a 2-D Metroid?

Dread apparently never existed, or was scrapped (I remember hearing something about that a little while ago). I don't doubt there will be a new 2D Metroid soon enough, though.

aww, yoshi is the cutest
