Nintendo man hints at new 3D Mario for DS...

DS News | ...and discusses Wii, cel-shading and the new Zeldas.
According to a hint dropped by Nintendo's Takashi Tezuka, the DS could be seeing a fully 3D follow-up to Super Mario 64 DS. For those of you with an inferior knowledge of all things Nintendo than David (so, everybody), Tezuka is general manager of Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development department, and has worked on all sorts of Ninty games since the original Super Mario Bros. on NES.

And it was in an interview with GameDaily.biz that Tezuka pondered how much he'd like to be involved in a new 3D Mario for the DS. "I'd love to [do another 3D Mario on DS]!" he gushed, before cryptically adding, "I can't say anything more than that." Perhaps not the biggest of hints then, but after the excellence of New Super Mario Bros., we're certainly in the mood to see more of Nintendo's plumber.

Tezuka also touched on other Nintendo-related subjects, notably Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess. "I think everybody's going to have a different opinion [on whether it's the best Zelda] depending on what you're looking at when you play. There are a lot of different factors that will influence or impact that decision," he explained. "I think this is a game that [the team] has taken a lot of pain and a lot of care to make, and that's definitely evident from beginning to end that you can see the amount of work and detail that's been put into the project, even to the point where I'm [sometimes] surprised and will go, 'Who's responsible for this amount of detail, for this one section?' This is amazing, even to me."

The DS-bound Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass also got a mention, with Tezuka discussing why cel-shaded visuals, reminiscent of those seen in Wind Waker, had been included. "[Two years ago at E3] I was on the bus with some of the people on the Wind Waker staff and they were all saying how enamoured they were with that graphical style and the Wind Waker Link model, and they were saying how they just want to use him more. One game wasn't enough because they liked it so much, and they were already talking about the DS at that time at Nintendo anyway. And they thought, 'Well wouldn't that be fun?'"

Last on the agenda for Tezzy was the Wii, or rather the Wiimote controller's new speaker function, and what it could possibly offer gamers. "If you're playing a game where you're taking turns, players 1-4," explained Tezuka, "if it's your turn your controller could go 'ding, da, da, ding!' and that's kind of a neat thing [...] I think [the speaker] strengthens the impact of the game for each individual player and some of the effects that we're conveying or the experiences that we're trying to convey to the individual player. This is one tool that we can use to heighten that."

Would be nice to see something a little better than a ported Mario game on the console (I'm not talking about NSMB). SM64 was a bit of a disappointment, so it could be a good cance for a new game. I like Cell-shaded link, so Phantom Hourglass is fine by me.

God I hope there isn't a sequel to Super Mario 64 DS. I hated the controls on DS and simply refused to play the game which is a real shame because it is a great remake.

Hopefully future 3D Mario platformers go to Wii not DS.

^ Obviously if a new 3-D Mario game was created for the DS the game would be created with the DS's control scheme in mind rather than being a port.

I think his comment about Twilight Princess is needed actually. Means that gamers will decide what they think of a product rather than the hype machine.

I like this guy. He's clearly not in marketing saying things like that, but it's true! No matter how good TP is people will think Ocarina or LttP etc is better.

Another 3D Mario platformer? I'm pretty content with Yoshi's Island 2 coming out.

As for Twilight Princess, I'm hoping it will be the best Zelda ever, I guess we'll have to wait and see. I'm sure it won't disappoint.

A new 3D Mario sunds good if given the right control scheme, but I'd love another 2D Mario (one with a bit of difficulty, for starters) more. Hell, why not both?

Why not both indeed.

I was hoping they'd put together a new 3D "Super Mario" game for the DS, so I'm happy to hear this news - give us another 2D one as well down the track, plus the Wii "Super Mario Galaxy" and that would be SO good!

Kaboth is right though, as much as i tried to adapt, as much as i tried to be patient with the touch control on mario 64 ds, it just didn't end up working.Where once in the 64 version i could pull of wall jumps and side flips and whatnot with ease in the ds version it was just too diffcult.Heck walking slowly in a straight line was a chore most of the time.

Another 3dlook/2d plane mario would be greatly appreciated, but make it more like super mario bros 3(more items, boss variety, and yoshi, even though he wasn't in smb3) rather then more like super mario bros 1 which is what new super mario bros seems to be based upon.

I don't see TP being better than Link's Awakening/OoT/MM(/LttP - not really held as one of the greats for me simply because everything in it had been done elsewhere by the time I played it), simply because I don't see them doing anything interesting which hasn't been done puzzle wise. Least from trailers and things. It should be good, but it's not going to be great unless the puzzles are unique and interesting. What I keep hoping for is fishing any time, that would open up a bunch of new gameplay elements.

Don't know why everyone think's highly of Super Mario Bros. 3. Nostalgia I guess, I just recently completed it for the first time and found it too easy, and there was just too many items. The amount of items was my real beef with it. All the suits are just useless, bar the Tanooki suit, which would be pretty good if it was an upgrade of the Raccoon Mario, due to rarity however it fails like the rest of them.

I think NSMB has too many items if anything, there's just an overabundance of fire flowers which doesn't really help the difficulty (far too easy, though I did complete Lost Levels recently which doesn't help matters).

I don't really want a Super Mario 64 2 on the DS, but if it happens, I'd probably buy it. I'd rather a NSMB2 with either difficulty settings, or just generally more challenging. Proper 2 player co-op/counter-op, like Four Swords, in either would be a must.

Why is the difficulty so important to you? Obviously a good difficulty level (hard - but not ridiculously so) is good, but its not the be-all and end-all. SMB3 reeks of fun gameplay, and even if its not super hard, its a blast to play through.

I don't get why everyone complais about NSMB's difficulty. Did you try to get all the big coins? And unlock all the levels?

More to the point, are people caling it easy just because you don't see the 'game over' screen because you have 70 lives? That's crazy. I'd say I lost 300 lives playing the game through, and just because there's a good supply available doesn't make the game 'easy'.

Basically, I reckon NSMB is harder then Mario 3 and World, and also Yoshi's regular game (although getting perfect scores on some Yoshi levels was much harder then anything in NSMB)

David's right about the difficulty of nsmb.I think it achieves a happy medium, a standard playthrough will keep the newbs and youngins happy, the addition of star coins and hidden levels should keep the completionists happy, and while it's certainly not a hard game by any stretch, it is decently challenging in quite a few areas.Although it sounds counter-intuitive, if you find the game to be to easy, simply don't make use of the power-ups you have saved up in the touch screen.Keeps things a lil more challenging.

And what's this......someone doesn't like smb3??It ain't nostalgia, it was a great game and still is a great game full stop.Imo the game is harder then nsmb easily, but again, not hard to the point of turning some people away or leaving people frustrated. The BEST thing about smb3 was the variety!!I mean, sureeeeeeee, if you played the game from start to finish you will end up with an item select screen full to the brim of p-wings, and star man and clouds, but you don't have to use them, to a more advanced player, think of them as collectables(though i always saved a cloud for that pain in the ass fort in world 8 that was full of doors, i didn't have the patience to find the way out of that fort).

And the suits had there place in the game, the frog suit made some tricky underwater levels a breeze, the tanooki suit was a mad bonus when you found one(feather '+' in my eyes), and the elusive hammer bros suit was a gem few found, i think it's the first time mario has been able to kill boo's and thwomps in any of his games.Mad.

Didn't like smb3.....what has the world come too!

EDIT-Oh and koopa kids>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>baby bowser. Why did they drop the koopa kids......they were cool!Baby bowser......tsk....gay.He always has been.Morton or Larry ftw!@

Jibbs, I was wondering segment of your post to quote and say I agree with, when I realised I agree with pritty much all of it.

SMB3/SMW/Yoshi's island are harder than NSMB, but that depends on weather you want to collect all of the star coins.

And David, I agree with you about the 1-ups. Just becuase you don't go to a 'game over' screen doesn't make the game easy. In platformers, 'game over' screens are just annoying imo, as you just restart the level with 5 more lives straight away after dieing.

I never complained about the difficulty level, I always have fun playing the game (even though I've finished it 100%). I wish there had been a few more worlds though.

A new 3D Mario game would be great. Also, another 2D Mario game with Yoshi in it. If the sales of NSMB in America and Japan are anything to go by, we'll most likely see a NSMB2 game somewhere in the DS' life span.

Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr are different characters. Baby Bowser is awesome - "My Gween Donkey!". I like Bowser Jr, though I like the Koopa kids / Koopalings more.

And that fort is impossible. I borrowed SMB3 (GBA) off my cousin, and finished everything... except that. I kept it for a month longer and still couldn't clock it. And just recently I grabbed the game off him again for a few days and... bupkis.

That thing is crazy.

^Sorry dances your right.

Baby bowser is cool (as in yoshi's island baby bowser), but bowser jr, no, don't like him, and don't like his weird 'mouth' shirt either.

And that fort is a pain.I have found my way through it on the odd occasion, but after the twentieth shot at it i just use a cloud and skip it.That **** gets old real quick.

OMG ZELDA ROXORZ!?>!

It will be ready for release with Wii. Nobody has talked about Zelda in this thread since like 10 posts ago! Notice its a Mario thread?

The suits in SMB3 did not have their place. The only reason for having the frog suit is to be able to swim through strong currents to find a couple of typically useless secrets. The hammer suit, I never even found such a use for, perhaps if upon losing it you reverted to fire mario it would have been an excellent addition for boss battles. Tanooki suit had it's place, but I reckon it should be part of a line of power ups, perhaps every three collected raccoon leaf's resulted in a Tanooki suit. Generally the suits were mostly hindered by their necessity in gaining one another. Unless you had a suit, suits seemed rare to come by.

The other items such as clouds and p-wings, didn't bother me all that much, I found clouds useless since I made sure I completed all levels along the way. Although there was the odd use I found for them; skipping the hammer brothers and other roving enemies later in the game. P-wings were useful, and never felt game breaking due to lack of abundance. Warp whistles I had no use for, but if I was trying to get through the game in an expediated manner I could see the necessity.

SMB3 was a lot of fun, but I had problems with elements added to the formula, such as waiting for the Hammer Brothers to have their turn on the world map when I just wanted to get back to playing. I think the level design was consistently pretty good, but never really challenging. Being an old game didn't help matters much.

NSMB is good fun to be sure, but mostly suffers for the same reason as SMB3 - power ups. Getting mini mushrooms was a chore that could have been easily remedied if Giant mushroom houses had of supplied Giant or Mini mushrooms. The koopa shell feels useless apart from the few secrets it grants. I think the mini mushroom felt the most developed of all the new power ups, and that's mainly because there were areas designed with it in mind. Not quite to the level of Minish Cap though. NSMB really needed levels designed with the new power ups in mind, not just the odd secret to give necessity. Along with some challenging levels hidden away for the veterans ala Super Mario World.

Not using the stored power ups would only really matter in boss battles, which I hardly struggled with at all, that's without using a giant mushroom for instant success as well. Boss battles were fun anyway. I disliked the repetition of Bowser Jr. battles, those got old as quickly as the Koopalings, except I didn't have 12 years to forget about them.

As for the medals being a challenge to collect, I disagree, but then I got all 5 red coins & Yoshi eggs in Super Mario Bros. DX. Now there was a challenge. I failed to beat most of the high scores though.

I'd say both games are good fun, just neither is a great game. Both lack replay value compared with SMBDX, but that's understandable. Anyway back to shaving seconds off my NSMB 1-1 time (now at 372 remaining with Fire Mario & -Luigi).
