Dragon Quest IX confirmed for the Nintendo DS

DS News | Square Enix drops a bombshell. Updated to include the first images.

Square Enix just minutes ago dropped a bit of a bombshell at a conference in Japan, announcing that Dragon Quest IX will be coming to the Nintendo DS. The news has been confirmed by Famitsu.

This is something of a surprise - after all, it was expected that the ninth Dragon Quest title would end up on a console. The game isn't a spin-off, but the next title in the Dragon Quest series, and will be developed by Level 5. The game will also include WiFi support for four players in co-op. Square Enix has said it expects to release the title by mid-2007 in Japan.

Iv'e always wanted to get into a dargon quest game but besides some old skool new games they've been pretty sony exclusive.

Hey, that's pretty slick! This would be the first big-name RPG that isn't a re-hash/port on the DS, yeah?

6 million PS3 pre-orders were just canceled in Japan...

Although Enix always said Dragon Quest will always be on Japan's dominant platform, it's just that for the first time the dominant platform is a handheld.

Awesome, there's a game that I'll be wanting to get! Bring it on, this should be very interesting. I wonder how it will look on DS? I don't think they should make it 3D, it would look pretty bad. Something like Mario and Luigi would look nice. Wifi capabilities are a great idea.
