Shane Kim, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft Game Studios, and Phil Spencer, head of Studio Development for Microsoft Game Studios, revealed to 1up: "A Kameo or a Viva Pinata on a DS makes a lot of sense in a lot of ways from a franchise perspective," Kim said.
"I think it's fair to say that we're going to continue to invest in that property." Investment is good. Viva Pinata is good. "Whether that is in the form of a sequel, a product line extension or through merchandising, whatever the case may be, that's something that we're going to stick with."
The problem was, Viva Pinata didn't perform amazingly well in retail sales. Spencer isn't concerned, though, and is fully confident in the Viva Pinata intellectual property. "[Viva Pinata] is the beginning of an IP that will be a pillar for Microsoft Game Studios for a long time," Spencer said. "You won't hear us inside Microsoft talking about Viva Pinata as anything other than a success,"
To quash any possible platform rumors, Spencer adds: "Whether you're talking about [publishing games on] mobile or the DS -- you probably won't see it on the PSP, though."
Rare is currently working on the latest in the Banjo franchise, which is music to our ears. In the meantime, for those still out of the loop, Viva Pinata is still sitting there on the shelf, ready to go! At a comparatively low RRP, it's an absolute must-buy.
