GDC 08: Worms: Space Oddity detailed

Wii News | Want to know what the game looks like?
Team17 has released some of the very first images of Worms: A Space Oddity, which is set for release on the Wii next month.

A Space Oddity is in 2D and is set in space. The game will include brand new weapons and it will also be possible to customise your Worms, by choosing their helmet style and skin colour. Originally Space Oddity was going to support online play, but this has since been removed from the final game.

This looks like it could be great fun. Unfortunately the omission of online play means I won't be picking it up.

Also, are they still selling Worms games at full retail prices? I feel like it should be a budget title.

QFT, hopefully if enough people do this Team 17 will get the goddamn hint. It's not hard to implement online play into an already multiplayer game, and it'd be the perfect addition to a game that's quite frankly not changed (at least not for the better if we ignore Worms 3D) in 10+ years.

I'll be picking this up purely because it is a new 2D worms game, on the Wii! Our household are big Worms fans (still play a bit of WWP when we can) and also, unsurprisingly, are big Wii fans. Especially the 3-4 player multi Wii games, which this undoubtedly is. So, assuming that the game isn't complete garbage, this will be in our collection ASAP.

Is this only coming to wii?! Sad faces at the thought of being stuck with only 3d iterations of the game on my xbox/360.

Worms is on Live! Arcade, is 2D, and is quite decent (although not a patch on WWP, of course).

No online? What's the point of releasing it then? It's not like people have been really hollering for another Worms game to be 5 years behind the times.

Still angry that they scraped the online modes.

Okay while this is very far from 100% confirmed but what I'm aware it's most likely not Team17 dropping the online play. it's bloody Nintendo!
EA wanted to use online/wifi interoperability with the DS <> Wii in "My Sims" but it was Nintendo **** them around that stopped them.
And haven't we heard recently that Nintendo has no plans to make an "Animal Crossing" MMO... it's obviously inviting a whole heap of MA15+ related trouble into a "family friendly" image... maybe that's the main issue (or incompetence)?
And what's with EA's "Medal of Honour 2" missing multiplayer functions in Oz?! Can't tell me that we couldn't have used UK / UK servers!
I'm not specifically Nintendo bashing but it obvious they need to get their act together online/wifi wise! There's been far too many Nintendo games that have been sub-par due to a lack of online functions!
