Wiimote to become lightsaber in new Stars Wars game

Wii News | Star Wars fans will be happy.
Late last month, we reported that a brand new Star Wars game for the Wii and DS based around the upcoming Clone Wars film was in the pipeline. Today, LucasArts have confirmed that this is absolutely the case. As it turns out, the Wii version has been dubbed Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels and will feature the Wiimote as a makeshift lightsaber.

Australian developer Krome Studios are in charge of the big project, which will draw heavy influence from the animated film and TV series.

Game producer Ken Fox has told IGN that while the Wiimote won't completely dictate the movement of the lightsaber, it will be close.

"We've tried to make the lightsaber control as intuitive and fun as possible. It's not a lightsaber simulator, but when you swing your Wii remote left to right; your character does the same," said Fox. "I wouldn't describe what we're doing as one-to-one in the way that you might picture, but we really tried to make it feel like you get to swing your lightsaber 'manually'."

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance will be the DS game, with development being headed by LucasArts' team in Singapore. The press release hints at two player co-operative play, telling players to "experience the awesome power when two Jedi join forces to fight as one". The stylus will also act as some sort of lightsaber input device.

Both of these games are due out in time for Christmas next year.

I always imagined the hardest thing about a 1:1 sword system would be animating the arms so it doesn't look like the saber is pulling you around.

Episode 3 is rated M. Proof: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121766/

Anyway, you are always going to have realism problems with games. Its a machine designed to MIMIC real life.

I read that its not 1:1, they have only confirmed side slashes. (kotaku au).

Still sounds cool.

As far as ratings Ep 3 is M. Im pretty sure.

It's not really possible to have 1:1 with lightsabers... even if the motion sensors could accurately replicate the way the controller is being held, what would happen when say, you clash swords? There would be no way to physically stop the controller's movement in its path as the player swings, so while the on screen one should collide with the other lightsaber, if it was to replicate the controller's position, it would simply pass straight through, same problem with hitting walls etc.
Yeah thats the problem with the wii version, I think that is one flawed aspect. But if the game is 1:1, I have no hesitation in just slicing bots.

I just want to hear it.....*Whooo whoo wremm*

Sorry, but not 1:1 = not win.

If it isn't 1:1, then this is just The Force Unleashed without force powers.
So what you're saying is that you want to be the Star Wars Kid.

Die by the Sword and VSIM FTW!

Only game in existence to feature 1:1 sword play .... well close enough to it icon_smile.gif using the mouse.

If you have never tried it then you are seriously missing out on something special.

No, for to wish for such a powerful imagination is to doom oneself to despondence as one realises that such lofty heights of believingness are out of reach for weak minds such as mine. I merely wish that a developer would make a game where I wouldn't have to imagine that waving a stick around was actually disemboweling my enemies.

Seriously though, I think that the driving fantasy behind the teenage male's drive to get his hands on a lightsaber is (ok, that sounded really bad) to give him a chance to be a one-man army like the Jedi's in Star Wars. The Force is actually the biggest part of that, but you can't pretend to use the force when sparring with a friend. Hitting him over the head with a big stick, however, has very similar effects to those that a lightsaber would have. icon_razz.gif

That's why us guys find lightsabers more alluring than force powers - they are simply more accessible and believable.

Die By The Sword was a brilliant idea with a terrible input device. The whole following through thing didn't matter with it either, at least it didn't feel wrong at all. Was quite a fun game too, although it was often hard to get the game to do what you want it to. However replaying scenes from Holy Grail makes any game win in my book.

It also sucked.

Esspecialy compared to This

Thats what the new clone wars cartoon is based off of. If we get fights in this game at least 1 tenth as epic as that then this game is going to **** ROCK!

George Lucas only says that the new Star Wars movies are aimed at children as an excuse for them being mind-bendingly awful. How many kids movies are there with 6 hand removals, two leg removals and a decapitation in them? Or a guy choking his pregnant wife to death? Or a Cyborg being shot in the heart, then having his heart explode and shoot fire out of his newly hollowed eye sockets?

It's like Kevin Smith saying his movies aren't for critics whenever they end up sucking.

Actually, it's easier than you might imagine. That's not to say it doesn't take a bit of time to implement, but the methods are most certainly there and commonplace.

I thought the Force Unleashed was meant to be the wiimote light saber wet dream.... Did i miss something there??

Don't particularly like the art style, nor the ridiculous trails on lightsabers. Would've preferred something more Jedi Knight 2-like.
