New Sonic outing for the Wii

Wii News | Sonic gets a sword.
Sonic the Hedgehog will be once again gracing the Nintendo Wii, this time in Sega's newly announced Sonic and the Black Knight.

The game will be a direct sequel to 2007's Sonic and the Secret Rings, which we thought was a rather enjoyable romp, although it was not without its flaws.

Sonic and the Black Knight will - as you might have guessed by the title - take Sonic to the middle ages, with locations that are apparently 'Arthurian-inspired'. The spikey one will get even pointier too, as the game will equip Sonic with a sword to aid him as he goes about his daily heroics.

Developmental duties are being handled by the Sonic team, so hopefully this game will turn out to be better than most of Sonic's 3D adventures over the years.

Expect a release somewhere in the second quarter of next year.

If Mario can go into space, than Sonic can go into the middle ages. I'm alright with that as long as it keeps the fast paced nature of the Secret Rings, which is the closest they've come to capturing the original's style.

Yes because making a game about sonic swinging a sword in the middle ages is taking the **** out of a movie about Batman.

Personally I quite like the concept and it looks quite interesting. Adding the sword into the platforming part of the game may actually make them more fun then before. Especially with the Wiimote controls. Plus he looks freakin' awesome with that sword, the size is reminiscent of Clouds buster sword in FF7.

Mario travels into space with a backing of quality gameplay over the years (Sunshine was still one of the best platformers last generation, regardless of it being the worst Mario platformer). Sonic travels to the middle ages armed with the BLADE OF SUPREME MEDIOCRITY. That's the difference.

Secret Rings only got half decent when you'd gone up enough levels that he actually ran fast - and by then you were so sick of the game (and that **** theme song) that you didn't care.

Strangely gratifying after you continue to work your way up in life while she literally goes down?

his going to need some armor.

Underwhelming, secret rings is ok but by far it isn't sequel material. They had the chance to make this game so zelda-esque too, what a shame they didn't have a crack at that.

Hah! What's next? Sonic's Maths Lessons ?

This franchise officially has zero credibility left for me. Way to sell out Sonic's soul Sega. I suppose the need to flog a franchise into oblivion is high on their list of money making 'schemes', considering their appalling movie tie-in games..

Mario titles have held onto something that Sonic titles lack - Quality.
