I'm confused, why is Mega Man 9 8-bit? Mega Man 8 was released on the Playstation, so why is this a step backwards graphically? It's not like it's a reprisal of the classic difficulty because let's face it, Mega Man titles have always been tougher than most. I just don't get it.

Personally, I think Megaman is better suited to 8-bit , but thats coming from someone who prefers Zelda on the NES. I hope the old style MIDI music is retained as Megaman 2's music was brilliant.

I agree Megaman is way better in 8-bit. The different levels look similar to Megaman 2, so I'm very happy and can't wait.

They are making it like a classic NES game. They even made the horrible box art like the old ones. The game's also going to have the limitations of the NES versions and things like screen flickering(it can be turned off though). It's going to be hard as hell as well.

Their pretty much making a NES game down to the last detail.

Because they can.
It's awsome.

But most of the difficulty in the NES games was due to the limitations of the hardware and the lack of refined control. Unlike later titles where it was far more about your reflexes than everything suddenly disappearing for a half second while you're making a huge jump and then you finding out there's a bullet right in front of you.

I'll still buy it, but I still think they dropped the ball when this could have been some of the most amazing 2d art ever devised (I've always though the Mega Man and X games have had great background and character design).

^ Agreed. It seems like a bit of a copout to do the game in 8-bit and simply label it 'classic'.

Out of curiosity, how old are you Sin Ogaris? Did you grow up with the original Megaman games?

The reason I ask is that most people who grew up with these games love it, and the general consensus among fans is that there hasn't been a truly awesome, fun and true Megaman game since these NES ones.

He's old enough. I also grew up with Megaman games on the NES (among others), and tend to agree with Sin & Cer on this.

While I think it's pretty cool that they're doing this, I think it's also a huge bummer that they didn't opt for high-res 2D art instead. It wouldn't have been hard to refine the art and keep the NES style of play, and it would have been about 1000x times cooler to do that and then give the option of having the NES styled visual limitations.

I think it's cool eitherway, but it could have been a whole lot cooler.

23, and yes.

However I have always thought that the X series was better, by leaps and bounds. Although i never did get around to finishing all the early titles (finished the first and second games, finished 6 and 7 via emulating, as well as X1, 2, and 3, oh and Rockman and Forte as well, oh and I had played the other NES games, just didn't finish them). Looking back the earlier NES titles felt harder than they actually were due to slowdown, stuttering, disappearing bullets, etc moreso than the actual level difficulty (also the bosses were a cakewalk, save for whichever you take down with the blaster, as I found the required weapons did an exorbitant amount of damage in the earlier games and the patterns were far more forgiving).

It's not like I'm asking for 3D, I still love the 2d art design, which the gameplay of the original titles could easily be translated to a HD 2d landscape. Hell, I'd be more than happy to fork out 400 points for ports of the original games on Live, but it just feels like for a NEW title in the series, I agree with Cerebral in that it's a copout.

So yeah, if thewy want classic gameplay, port the old games, for new games, make it a new game. Like I said though, it's still a buyer because it's a welcome change from that Battle Network stuff (which was fun for the first couple of games but got quite tiresome) and whatever else bizarre spinoffs they've concocted over the years.

Problem with doing a gorgeous Hi res 2D game is that hi res 2D art takes up a lot of memory wich would present a problem keeping things under the memory limits of the downloadable games.

I think they're making it 8-bit because it's a great gimmick to do so, a real eruption of nostalgia all over the face of hungrily-lapping fans.

As a marketing idea, it's fantastic - create a classic 8-bit game to capitalise on the goodwill and nostalgia of the early games in the series, which is easy and cheap to create, and is a massive gaming-cultural talking point.

I could flibble on about postmodernist theory but really, who gives a toss.

I for one am looking forward to it - it's a very interesting experiment.

The old school sprites just bring out the nostalgic feelings in most NES-era gamers. The look is great, but I honestly like the 2D Mega Man X graphics a lot better.
