Every Wii sold makes Nintendo USD $6

Wii News | Microsoft breaks even, Sony loses money.
It's common knowledge that unlike the other console manufacturers, Nintendo actually makes money on each Wii sale. However, it has been revealed that this figure is USD $6.

The news comes from a Forbes report where Macquarie Securities analyst David Gibson highlighted Nintendo's successful strategy of opting for older, cheaper technology as opposed to their rivals. By contrast, Microsoft are only breaking even on every Xbox 360 they sell, while Sony are losing money with each PlayStation 3 sold.

Helping pad Nintendo's pockets are their share in software sales. They move 60% of the Wii's software, while Microsoft and Sony only publish 30% and 15% respectively. Gibson also predicted that the Wii would sell 220 million pieces of software this year, compared to Microsoft selling 125 million and Sony 120 million.

Good news for Nintendo shareholders, then.

To date, the Wii has sold 35 million units worldwide. Microsoft have managed to shift 23 million 360s, while Sony has flogged 13 million PS3s.

Perhaps they could use some of that insane profit margin (if true) to release games in PAL territories even vaguely in line with US release dates, or even just at all in some cases!

I mean, really Nintendo, you've done some cool things recently, and I suppose you more or less raised me as a child (vicariously, through various first party titles), but the other two players in this console race have got their releases in check FFS so it can't be that difficult. Come on, time to put on the big-boy pants and get your **** in order.
Or go region-free. Whichever you prefer.

$6 isn't much but at least it's a profit.
Nintendo not only gets money from the Wii sales, but every other product they have (spare parts not to mention the actual parts that they themselves produce plus other consoles etc).

Still i feel sorry for Sony, i personally love my PS and PS2, and i would love to buy a PS3 but it's just too expensive for me. What i don't get is that the 360 is like the PS3 yet it's way cheaper (at least here in Aus it is) i Mean i could go buy a Wii and a 360 at the same time for the same amount it would cost me to buy one PS3.
Either way, i love Sony and i love Nintendo so i guess i'll just save up...

OR maybe i can go and ask Nintendo for a loan of some of that money they're making...
=D
