NHL 2K11 to be Wii exclusive

Wii News | Canadian PS3 and X360 owners weep.
While traditionally released across a variety of platforms, 2K Sports' annual hockey franchise NHL 2K will be a Wii exclusive this year, leaving armchair puck heads waiting for the next iteration of the title to arrive.

In a conference call earlier today, Take-Two confirmed that the franchise will be returning to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms in 2011. The publisher cited the reasoning behind the move is so the development team can increase the development cycle in able to focus on making NHL 2K12 a better title.

Hahaha! My interpretation of this news:

Nintendo: Woo! Yeah! Suck on that guys! We're clearly the preferable console!

... so we can rush it to work harder on the PS3 and 360 versions for next year.
Nintendo: ****!

Not that it really matters, EA dominates this particular sport.

Unlike the NBA games, 2k's NHL efforts aren't up to the par of EA's. I would say that is clearly the reason why it's a Wii exclusive... it's the only platform the game may sell okay on, at least compared to its competition... or lack thereof.

The fewer consoles this franchise appears on, the better.

Good news.

I kind of don't get what you are saying there TamTam79.
Is it the actual franchise rubbish?
I don't play many sports games especially hockey so I don't really know, but some friends of mine love the sports games.
Is there a better franchise for hockey?
Just would like to know so mates don't pick up a crap version.

EA's offering crushes the 2K one. By a massive margin, IMO.

2K still win out with their NBA title, but their baseball and hockey franchises are languishing incredibly far behind the competition. Which is a damn shame, because when 2K NFL was still going strong, it trumped Madden, which at the time was the unthinkable.

Basically, 2K and hockey = Wii can have it all to themselves. Nobody else will even care.

Ahh thanks TamTam icon_y1.gif
Yeh was just wondering because nba 2k7 i thought was pretty good and i kind of expected other franchises would be of similar quality.
Good to know, thanks again.

Yeah I dont think 2K hockey is all that far behind EA truthfully. EA's control scheme is brilliant but the puck physics are much better in 2K's game. It feels much more organic and I love the excitement of knowing that a lucky bounce can lead to a score from any shot. Consequently there is a much greater goal variety in 2K's game. I don't get that feeling from EA hockey.

That being said, 2K could definitely use a year off to catch up in a lot of areas. This is really good news to me. Competition between studios is a great thing for sports gaming. You only need to look at the improvements FIFA made after years of embarrassment at the hands of PES, for a positive example. Or the way EA Tiburon drove American Football gaming into the ground after the NFL exclusive licence deal, for a negative.
