Wii price drop

Wii News | How does $100 off sound to you?
The Wii has received its first price drop in Australia and New Zealand. Starting tomorrow, 29 April 2010, the Wii will be sold for AU $299.95 (NZ $399.95).

This price drop of AU $100 comes soon after the AU $50 drop which recently occured for the Nintendo DSi, which was introduced to make space for the DSi XL. Could Nintendo be gearing up for the release of a new home console? However, as many forumers have pointed out, it is more likely due to slowing sales or the strength of the Australian dollar.

Since its launch, Nintendo has sold over 1.79 million consoles in Australia.

One wonders what prompted this? Let the hardware revision speculation begin.

Sales have probably slowed, since ~8% of the population has bought one. Now they've moved down to the next bracket of people who couldn't afford one while still making a profit.

About bloody time. But $250 would have been acceptable. Especially considering an X360 Arcade is $300.

I wonder what MS will do to counter this. I they still want to maintain their 'best, cheapest console' motto

should've been done the second the black wii came out imo, but i guess nintendo didn't want to lose the extra profit from those who were willing to pay the higher price

Knock $50 off, or not give a **** and wait until the slim revision is announced at E3.

Have they dropped the price worldwide? Or just here in Australia? Speculating about new hardware is a bit tenuous if they have only dropped the price here.

I think grim-one is more likely to be right. Using Amazon for prices and xe for conversion, in the US the prices is 200 USD (218 AUD) and in the UK the price is 160 GBP (266 AUD). They are probably using the stronger AUD and low manufacturing price to drop the price to stimulate sales. The question is why? Slowing sales seems likely. If we had official sales numbers, it would be easy to confirm or deny this.

Not recently, but the black Wii bundle (with Sports Resort and M+) was recently announced for the US.

I work at EB and I can definitely say, in EB's at least, Wii sales have been slowing quite dramatically for the last year or so.
So yeah, I'd say that'd be the reason for the drop, not a new console.

Might get a used one at a decent . There's enough good games now where I want to buy one. Although I want the PS3 more

If I can get a pre-owned one for $150 I'm sold. The Last Story and Dead Space Extraction is calling.

Work (CC Prahran) had them at 160 for a little while, when we had about 9 (this was just before EB were doing their 200 buck trade ins... damn it), now we only have two and they're at 199. Could probably haggle it down though.

I think the US dollar has been comparable to the AU dollar since August 2008. It took them that long to balance out the price?

Still, good timing if you're wanting Monster Hunter 3, which releases tomorrow.

I think I'll still wait for a Metroid Other M bundle. No other game has me quite enthralled enough, but my defences are weakening.

"Hey everyone, we dropped the price of the Wii!"
"But we all already have one..."

... if only you could put the $100 you saved into more ram or something. Because the visuals... sure... are... pants.

You're mad if you buy $40 component cables. The cheapo $10, sometimes less, ones you can find provide equally good signal quality.

Do you not know the Nintendo tax!

Where do you gather that from? I was in the US last year and transferring my AU over to US was depressing see how much I got for how much I paid. icon_sad.gif

A $100 price drop has increased by interest level in buying a Wii by 500%, therefore it's still 0.

Agreed, if you are willing to wait like I did (I got this in a week, Vervain I think got it under a month, depends if you are lucky with post I guess), you can get it for US$4.92 here DealExtreme - Just-Works 480p Component AV Cable for Wii (Not Affiliated)

Works just like a charm, why pay full price for cables?!?

You're mad if you pay even $10 for component cables. Mine cost me $6 from Dealextreme and work perfectly.

The aussie dollar is back up to about $US .9 after dropping back down to about 70 or 80 something cents last year.

hmmm, $300 sure is tempting, i'll have to put some cash aside for when one of the majors puts a wii in their catalogue as a decent bundle
