Pre E3 2006: Rayman: Raving Rabbids announced

Wii News | First screenshot of a Wii game inside!
Rayman is finally returning, and right in time for the Nintendo Wii launch. This time, a bunch of psychotic bunnies called Rabbids (no, that's not a spelling error) are threatening the world, and as usual it's up to Rayman to sort out the mess. Rayman creator Michel Ancel has promised that Rayman: Raving Rabbids will be Rayman's wackiest adventure yet.

“After wrapping up Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, the team here in Montpellier sat down to talk about having some fun with Rayman and his universe" said Ancel. "We are running into a bit of a problem, though, because our game has been invaded by thousands of raving mad and vicious bunnies, who have apparently been preparing this assault since the very first Rayman game. We are now sending an SOS to all motivated gamers to help us get rid of them as fast as possible!”

Ubisoft will have the next Rayman adventure ready for the end of the year for just about every console, but they're making a big deal out of the Wii version, and have even released a screenshot early of the next-gen Nintendo version. Without further ado, here it is:

There it is. The first non-scanned Wii screenshot.

More soon, we're sure.

I like ancel's comments... Though they could be early hyperbole: the idea of trying to play a videogame where rabbbits hijack the 'gamespace' is hilarious. Finally a game with the perfect means to spoof itself and the industry.

Very nice idea, though sadly those graphics aren't anything the current generation can't do.

Eh, what? they look way better then current gen...

Also remember that Nintendo isn't pushing nexgenhypermagicalHDOMFG! graphics like Sony and Microsoft.

It'll be more interesting to see how the game plays.

And WOO! @ fuzzy pink afro! The graphics are pretty decent though, I was expecting worse. And this may not be final. If they tune it more, it could look fantastic. I remember the Rayman 3 graphics on the cube being pretty good.

Not really, no. The Playstation 2 could easily pull off that kind off polygon count and texture modelling (Probably surpassed in games such as God of War, or MGS3).

While Nintendo's focus is not entirely on graphics, this pales in comparison to Red Steel, and what the Revolution is capable of on a whole.

Edit: hah, how about that. I still call it the Revolution. icon_razz.gif

The only thing I find impressive about that screen is the lighting. And the afro. I'm not dissapointed with it in the least. (The screen, that is. Not the afro, although that is mighty impressive...)

I'm still sticking to that infallible mantra - 'screens never do a game justice'.

Yeah, the graphics doing look that amazing, and the pink afro rocks, but I'm sure they'll get better as development continues. I wonder what this means control wise with the Wii-mote and all..

Y'know, when I read about this on ign, they said that it's in development for other consoles also, so thinking back, it might not be a Wii screenshot at all.

It was announced as a Wii game though, so if anything that means the other two consoles are receiving ports and the Wii is getting the 'focus' this time around. Maybe not, but the screen is definitely a Wii one. Ubisoft said so themselves.

I hope this is just third parties not fully grasping Wii's maximum capability... I'm gonna hold out 'til SSB/Metroid/etc. screenshots for a true reflection of what it can do.

Admittedly the lighting is quite nice but it looks like the models are heavilly aliased.

I hope that this is not the full power of the Wii.

Oh, I wasn't aware that Ubi had said that. I stand corrected.

As for being "heavily aliased" I think the opposite, the anti-aliasing is quite good in that shot.

Fraxyl's right, there aren't any AA problems at all in that screenshot. The issue I have is the textures, in that they're awful. That spider could be rendered on a Nintendo 64.
