RUMOUR: Wii to launch in September?

Wii News | Speculation over Wii launch plans ramps up.

According to industry insiders, Nintendo's Wii console could be on shop shelves by September, beating Sony's PlayStation 3 to launch by a full two months. The latest rumour regarding when we'll see Nintendo's fifth home console came courtesy of CNNMoney's Chris Morris, who claimed to be citing "anonymous industry insiders." If the new speculation is correct, it means we could be playing on the Wii as soon as eight weeks from now.

It's not totally unbelievable, either. After all, Nintendo will no doubt be keen to gain a head start (albeit a brief one) over Sony, which has already confirmed it will be launching the PS3 on November 17th in Australia, Europe and the US, and six days earlier in Japan. Not only that, but Ninty has also repeatedly promised that Wii will launch “by Thanksgiving,” while recent reports have all suggested that the manufacturing of Wii will be far easier than the manufacturing of PS3, due to the former having fewer components.

For now however, Nintendo is remaining characteristically mum about an official release date, with next month's Leipzig Game Convention the next conceivable event for Nintendo to open up about its launch plans. As always, stay tuned.

I thought they were planning on releasing information reguaring this at this years TGS. Let's hope they give us more than a couple of weeks warning!

I'm sure the hardware is all but done, but I think they are waiting to finalise the games before the can set a launch date.

Not possible I'm afraid, mate. The 'Article Talk' forum is solely intended for threads that are directly linked to every one of our stories, reviews, previews and features on the PALGN page. Deleting this thread would mean that when people click on the 'Reader Comments' link on the news story, they'd get a message such as 'This thread no longer exists'. And of course deleting your thread would be unfair, as it's a perfectly legitimate and decent discussion on the topic.

This does happen now and then - a user will find a piece of news and post it on the gaming forum, then we'll stumble across the story and post it up on the site. Just a fact of life that users will sometimes beat the staff to a story, but then there are hundreds of you and only eight or nine of us.

But we still have to put it on the main site as not everyone visits the forums - some only come for the site, and so they wouldn't hear about this news.

I think you guys do a good job all things considered. There is a lot of crap news out there but I think in general palgn usually only post the good stuff.

My birthday is in September too, it would be awesome if it comes out in September! I'm not sure I believe it though, I was expecting late October from I've read..

It indeed would be a good Birthday present for the majority of the population (September is 9 months after New Year's after all

). Didn't Sports Illistrated for Kids have something about the Wii being launched November 9th or something. My money's still on ate October early November.

This could be an excellent advantage for Nintendo if the rumor is true. But, I'd sooner the an extra two months (for november) to fine-tune some of those launch games, mainly the 3rd party games.

This'd be perfect for Ninty, any launch before the PS3 is enormous for them. It'd give them a great head start, and then the slack-jawed yolkels will shout that the PS3 copied Wii... >___> opr maybe not...

Yeah, I know GTPod, I was just thinking about it today. Nintendo said the Wii would be released in Q4 this year, but September is in Q3! Looks like late October almost certainly.

A firm release date would be great but it would also be good if we had more information/video clips on some of these games. I wonder if Nintendo will take those caravans around to the shopping malls like they did before they released the gamecube.

Now we know that the Wii would be released in September, if Apple had only went and bought Nintendo.

Although, what is newsworthy would be how long has the Wii been in prodoction. Which my sources say sometime late June.

Wont happen, they are releasing it in the 4th quarter. They are announcing the release date in september.

They have already said 4th quater, that is October, November & December, they have already said it will beat PS3 to launch which cuts the time frame in half, so its either October, or early November, simple as that.

An early October launch would be great but im predicting November 1st worldwide with the posibility of an early Japanese launch. In many places you can pre-order the console and thats it, not many places are allowing pre-orders for games yet, but i think in September the full list of launch titles will be revealed plus the launch date and pricings.

It would be very VERY unlikley to release the console early for a few reasons

1) Even though the console is most likley finished, the launch title games are not, they do NOT want to repeat the failure of the Dreamcast, an early release without the support would result in an early death for the Wii.

2) It makes sence to release it not to close before the Playstation 3, with all the Wii hype going around, the launch would be indescribable, the PS3 launches only 2 weeks later, people will have their brand new Wii's and wont care about the PS3. November 1st would be perfect.

3) The Tokyo Game Show will be a perfect platform to make final announcments about titles, price and avaliablility for day one, people to play it on day 2 and it is also a the perfect time to start the "home strech countdown" on day 3 for a late October/early november launch.

Nintendo know they got somthing special, they know that the people know it. Now they need the titles, AND they need perfect timing so Nintendo can finally take back their spot at the top of the industry. I know im already sold, ive already paid a heafty desposit the Wii which could end up paying for the whole system
