Super Fruit Fall Preview

Wii Preview | We go hands on with the Wii's only puzzle title.
Super Fruit Fall is set to be one of the first budget titles available for the Wii. The title is set for release on December 13 and will retail for $79.95. PALGN was recently invited to Funtastic to go hands on with the game so we could scope out exactly what Super Fruit Fall was about.

The concept is simple: all you need to do is make the fruit disappear by moving the fruit around the grid until the fruits are grouped together. You'll need to group three of the same fruits together, you can group them together in by having the fruits lined up or having them next to each other, diagonals do not count though. It is certainly a basic concept, but sounds a lot easier than it actually is.

Yep, it's called Super Fruit Fall alright!

Rotating the grid can be done with the directional pad on the Wii remote or by flicking the Wii remote. If you flick the Wii remote to the left then the grid will rotate to the left and if you flick the Wii remote to the right then the grid will rotate right, you can flip the grid by pushing up on the directional pad on the Wii remote. This sounds like an easy concept to grasp, but takes a bit of getting used too initially. You'll likely find yourself actually rotating the Wii remote, rather than just flicking it left or right; though after a few levels you'll adjust well to the controls.

The game is split up into five zones; industrial zone, play zone, island zone, castle zone and casino zone. Each of the zones is appropriately themed. In total there are fifty levels in the game, if you get stuck on a level and you have a high enough score then you can get assistance. Because Super Fruit Fall is a puzzle game, it's not necessarily that important to just pass the levels. You'll be awarded more points if you make more fruit disappear in the one combo and you can also get time bonuses.

Oh no! That fruit's gonna fall!

In total, Super Fruit Fall features three modes of play; arcade mode, time trial mode and practice. In the arcade mode you progress from level to level, trying to get a high score and a fast time. In the time trial mode you're able to play through any previously completed level to try and get a faster score or a better time. The game will save all of your high scores so you can keep track of whether you're improving or not. The practice mode lets you play any completed level without any restrictions, which is nice if you just want to become familiar with the game too.

The game will also include a multiplayer mode which we didn't get an opportunity to try out. We believe it will put players on the same screen with the objective of finishing the level first and getting a higher score than your opponent. We came away from Super Fruit Fall not shocked or overly giddy. The game isn't trying to be the next killer app or an epic title. The game looks to be a fun, simple puzzle game, at a budget price and with some intuitive controls Super Fruit Fall looks to be a decent puzzle game for the Wii.
Overall:
Super Fruit Fall isn't trying to be anything but a puzzle title, it's a lot of fun and is quite easy to control thanks to the Wii remote.

Sounds like a decent puzzle game. I won't be getting it though, I rarely buy puzzle games, but I like the preview.
