Opera coming to the Wii very shortly?

Wii Rumour | December 23rd actually.
Spanish Site Meristation is reporting (in Spanish, but don't worry - we did the translation) that the Opera Browser will be coming to the Wii on December 23, the only catch being that it will be in Beta Form.

To cover ourselves, there's also a slight possibility that the Beatles will be performing at the Opera on December 23, but we're pretty sure it's the former bit of news. The beta version will have flash but it seems that we'll be waiting until March for the final version of the browser, which will be available for free until June.

icon_lol.gif good one

I am no stranger to using beta versions of web browsers, Opera 9 beta for Linux was actually more stable than the final version. Windows version of the browser was good in both beta and final

My take is why Opera? there has to be somebody there that can port Firefox to the Wii?

I actually find it funny there places on the Nintendo website that do not support Firefox 2 and (wait for it...) Opera!

Also what about Opera for the DS? Any word on when we are getting that?

Why not Opera?

They have a lot of experience developing web browsers for devices other then a computer (e.g. PDAs, Mobile Phones, the Nintendo DS). Nintendo have a partnership with Opera and it was clear that this would carry over the the Wii.

Lastly, I find Opera is better than Firefox, and always have. icon_razz.gif

I disagree I have always found Firefox superior to Opera, but as long as it is not IE (terrible terrible browser and yes that includes v7) I guess I can't really complain

One thing that is cool though, PS3 is going to have installable a full blown Linux distro, Yellowdog for PS3 is looking pretty sweet, some open games are simple but fun to play

Opera is a great browser, I just hope that I have a means to wireless 'net by then. Does anyone know how effective those USB WiFi dongles are at (don't laugh) penetrating walls? My Wii is in the room next to my PC, and I'm wondering if the signal from a WiFi dongle will get through to the Wii or not?

Oh, and wasn't this meant to be a launch thing - A launch thing that was going to be free for the early adopters? Hrmm... i wonder then if we'll have to purchase the final release of it when it's ready?

No idea for dongles, but my router works well I dont think it should be a problem.

Anyway, great news, I've been looking forward to trying out some internet surfing using the Wii.

I'm not up with much of this, but wasn't this supposed to be a launch feature? So, you know, its late? Oh shock horror, Nintendo.

And secondly, how do you type? Is it an on screen keyboard or have Nintendo actually thought about this and released a keyboard peripheral, or, better yet, allowed you to plug in your current keyboard? I'm guessing its some sort of dodgy on screen keyboard.

Maybe Ninty were better of with the games dedicated console.

I heard somewhere it was ment to be free for a limited time, you do have point compare to multimedia machines, Nintendo doesnt fare out at all.

The Wi-fi dongle works pretty well, I use it for the DS. I cant connect my DS to my wireless router as I use WPA encryption because I am not an idiot

My Wii connects to the wireless router fine but I had to change the WPA key (I must have forgot what the last one was) and tested the Wi-Fi dongle which was 1.5 meters further away from the Wii than my wireless was and worked pretty well, and the computer was a piece of junk

Nintendo has stated that the final build will be ready in June to download through the Wii shop. However the free build was supposed to be included at launch with the wii console.

So im thinking they may leave the paid version back to mid to late july?

Gotcha. So, I wonder if people using the free beta build will be able to keep it, and keep using it, after the final release is up on the shop channel?

Thanks for the dongle info - although I'd still like to hear if anyone has done any testing as to it's range?

I have the Nintendo USB Dongle aswell as a DS Lite and a Wii. I bought it just to use on my Wii, but the range can be a problem. This little dongle can only put out so much signal. I'd say dont bother, unless the unit is in the same room or within eyeshot.

My TV is in the loungeroom at the front of the house and my PC is tucked away in a corner room. I'd say they are about 10 - 15m away from each other (aswell as out of eyeshot).

My advice? Definately go with a wireless router. My PC and Wii will be kept in the same room when i move house so ill stick with the dongle.

Yeah, on-screen only. icon_neutral.gif
They're having little problems with everything not exclusively gameplay-related, it seems. icon_razz.gif

Why not Firefox? Probably the political/legal issues surrounding it being open source, or maybe just because Opera is very small and very fast. I love Firefox, but it sure is resource hungry.

Just as I feared, I'll have to fork out about three times as much as I'll willing to just to get my VC and Opera on...
Thanks for that, now I won't go out and waste money on a dongle icon_smile.gif

Wireless router for the Wii, Dongle for the DS is the safest bet, the DS can only use WEP keys which is as bad as no security at all.

The DS has limitations not problems, less range and no security

Yay internet access....now all I need is a wireless router at my mums and a wireless router and an internet connection at my dads....

WEP is not as bad as he's making out. Australia doesn't have bunches of Linux geeks driving the streets in vans with homemade high gain WiFi recievers looking to steal bandwidth or break your Windows computer.

Even then, where I live they'd be pretty damn lucky to pick my wireless network from the road and hold onto it (no parking, 70 speed limit which virtually everyone goes about 10-20 higher than icon_razz.gif ).

Apprently driving in a linux van, means you cant afford decent broadband service.

Well considering it took me hours just to fix Wireless, changing from PPPOA to PPPOE, I couldnt push myself and too lazy to change now. Worse thing is I use a 64-bit encryption, rather than 128-bit WEP.
