Wii Internet Channel available now

Wii News | Free beta available for download now.
Nintendo Australia has sent word that the internet browser for the Wii is now available. The BETA has been developed from the ground up for the Wii.

“Our software brings the power and reach of the Internet to the hottest video game system available,” said Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, Devices at Opera Software. “Wii’s unique interface adds a new dimension to our browser, making it a useful tool that the whole family will enjoy operating with ease.”

The final version of the Opera browser will be available at the end of March 2007, and will be free for all Wii owners to download through the end of June. After June 2007, the browser will be available for download in the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii Points.

I just made this post with my wiimote. I really don't see myself doing this very often. Now excuse me, I'm off to point at some porn...

^^ VOOK, that site is awesome icon_biggrin.gif

I still find it a little odd that Nintendo get all ansy about the possiblity of Kids getting exposed to nasties while playing DS games online... but are happy to add a full 'net browser to the Wii. Surely the risk of being exposed to extreme content is significantly higher while browsing the 'net than it is playing Animal Crossing on WiFi?

How long does it take to type? hopefully not as slow as typing with 360 on screen keyboard..and can you plug in a usb kb to Wii?

Consider one finger typing - its really about the same length of time. I was impressed with the speed I was getting from the Wii Browser. icon_smile.gif

it's like watching your dad type. thump. thump. thump.

this took me about 1 minute to type.

i'm doing this on the wii as well. i think that it's a bit quicker than you think if you use the predictive text.

also i have been able to watch streamed videos off some web pages so it looks like porn is still an option :-p

lol, yer it is, but no actual downloads just streaming icon_sad.gif but i was surprised at how fast the pages load, i think its faster than my laptop

I'm using my Wii to type this! Pretty cool. icon_cool.gif The browser is pretty decent.

You guys must have slow PCs icon_confused.gif My PC (on a fresh install )and Mac both render webpages faster than the Wii does. But it is only a Beta after all, I expect things to improve for the actual release.

What format were the videos? I went to the Apple Quicktime trailer page and couldn't view them. Youtube did work though...

Pretty cool thing for free, I've added a bunch of sites to my favourites (including google) to save typing out the URL each time.

It seems to have Java but not flash or QT, so you're limited in what you can watch. It seems to just ignore popups too, which make some sites impossible to use icon_sad.gif

Edit: Forgot about http://wiicade.com/, free flash games for your wii!

I hear it only allows single-window browsing.

Can it do tabbed browsing?

Using the 'traditional' on screen keyboard is so slow my brains almost seeped out of my ears... til I realised there was a link down the bottom of the screen for a more 'mobile phone-esque' keyboard with predictive text like ur mobile - watch me go now! icon_smile.gif

bump because i finally downloaded the internet channel and wanted to show off typing with the wiimote. So far the only decent thing is being able to watch movies from youtube on a tv. it goes without saying that typing with this is a bitch.
