As expected, both the Nintendo DS and Wii have broken several records and had a high demand over the Christmas period, so much so that supplies were being bought out quicker than they could be restocked. Independent sales figures released by Chart Track revealed that almost 200,000 Wii consoles and 500,000 Nintendo DS consoles sold during December in the UK.
In Europe, the Nintendo DS enjoyed its highest monthly sales ever since launching back in March 2005. Over 1.7 million consoles were sold in December, making it the highest-selling console for that period, as well as the whole of 2006. The Wii on the other hand, sold more than 700,000 units across the region in December with 500,000 units of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess software being snapped up alongside it - translating to more than 70% of European Wii owners owning a copy. Not to be left in the shadows, Wii Play (complete with bundled Wii remote) apparently sold 320,000 units translating to 45% of all Wii owners owning the bundle.
The worldwide figures for Nintendo's DS and Wii consoles are looking more than promising, especially after the lacklustre sales of the GameCube. Will these sales continue for the Japanese company? We'll have to wait until later this year to find out.
