Wii's GameCube region lock busted

Wii News | No Freeloader required for region free backwards compatibility.
Sometimes, fiddling with your new toy can be useful. And it seems that by fiddling with their PAL Wii, some clever chaps have achieved something not thought possible with an un-modified console. A user of a certain forum (that we won't name because of some questionable activities there, legally speaking) who goes by the handle 'dolqube' apparently decided to experiment with his Wii console's GameCube boot function. And he found that it's actually possible to run original NTSC GameCube discs on a PAL Wii console without modification, and without the use of Datel's Freeloader software.

The method goes like this: Pop a PAL GameCube disc into the Wii, and head to the 'Disc Channel'. A GameCube logo should be up on the screen. Point the Wii Remote's cursor over the 'Start' option so it's highlighted, and while keeping your hand steady, press the eject button on the Wii. For about one second, the 'Start' option will remain active. In this window of time, hit the A button on the Wii Remote and then swap out your ejected PAL GCN disc with an NTSC (Japanese or USA) disc, which the Wii will accept into the drive.

If you get it right, the Wii should boot up in GameCube mode and run your NTSC game! We've tried it with several different games from both the USA and Japan, and after learning the timing, we got every game running on our PAL Wii first time.

What's great about this trick is that unlike many 'disc swap' import tricks in the past (such as those that worked on the Sega Saturn and the original PlayStation) this one doesn't require any physical modification of your console, and probably won't even harm it since the Wii is simply using its own disc loading mechanism the whole time. Apparently the reason it works is that the Wii takes a couple of seconds to power itself down to GameCube mode, but for the sake of brevity it tells the disc to boot before the transformation is complete. It is the window between the two that allows this trick to work.

But will it work with imported Wii discs? PALGN's resident 'import crazy man' Chris Sell has tried and can't get it to work. So it seems not for now, but we'll keep you updated.

Thanks to PALGN forum moderator Cerebral for the tip on this excellent Wii trick!

Thanks for that update Marlor. I find that area of the law particularly interesting.

Are you sure it pertains to region encoding beyond the games industry though, ie the regions of the DVD forum and Blu-Ray mob?

It certainly does.

The Copyright Amendment Act 2006 provides an exception that allows "circumvention devices" to be used to circumvent any "technological protection measure" that "controls geographic market segmentation by preventing the playback in Australia of a non-infringing copy of the work or other subject-matter acquired outside Australia".

You can see the revised version of the act at:

The exception for games and movies is in Section 10, point 1c) and 1d).

No problem.

I'm a keen importer, so I've been following the developments very closely.

It seems our Parliament is bucking the trend and actually standing up for consumer rights in the age of DRM and TPM. Both major parties have done their bit... so it really is something to be happy about.

crestfallen - You're forgetting that Nintendo is a company that ONLY makes games and consoles. Their profit RELIES on the sale of consoles and games. On the other hand, both Sony and Microsoft get considerable profit from other areas of their respective companies, due to gaming being only a branch of theirs.

On topic - Modchips legal = good thing. And this nifty trick will be useful when I eventually get a Wii.

^^ No, it isn't. The article mentions that the info is from somewhere else (although the forum itself isn't mentioned) and so as long as Kotaku and the like keep in the part about it being posted in a forum it's all A-OK. If PALGN acted like they found it out themselves, THEN it would be plagiarism, but this is not the case. Not to mention the fact that PALGN is a news sit which gets 99.99999999% of the news stories from somewhere else. It's acceptable to re-report news.

Psst - A forum does not necessarily want 'clicks' to its threads. News site? Yes. Forum? No.
I should let this rest, but i won't...

Ok, maxconsole is a news site with a forum tagged on (much like here), so yeah they want the click backs and the recognition for thier finds. PALGN didn't act like it was thiers, but they didn't give a proper source.

Even if Palgn gets thier news from somewhere else they should still say where they got it from. This is called good journalism, in fact its not called plagerism.

Basically from what i have seen, PALGN is an australian gaming press release site. Sure they have the top five fridays and weekly specials, but its nothing more than that in regards to orignal content. Please prove me wrong guys, but for now, i don't see any scoops.

I don't mean to be bitchy, but i'm just saying how i see it. Please feel free to make me eat some humble pie. It's about time Australia had a good gaming site, and i thought we did, but this has ruined it.

wow you are a fool, the forum in question linked to pirated material, PALGN can't go endorsing this i assume. Also ; what are you expecting from an Aussie site in terms of exclusives? jeez, not even IGN AU gets exclusives mate. Also, you'll find UNIQUE content quite rare on quite a few big sites, Eurogamer for example rarely get exclusives, half of the time of course it is reporting news. Just my 2c, but seriously mate i don't blame the writer, David Low for not linking back to a forum filled with illegal links

Also in terms of original content,
Easy Mode, franchise mode, dexterity, top 5 fridays, release lists, gaming bargains, roundtables...

Not to mention some of the best reviews around...
And what's this guff about 'original news' when it comes to gaming? Most gaming sites will repeat the same news stories, because that's what you do with news... report it.

The fact is that PALGN has strict rules about discussion of, or links to, any illegal activities - Hence linking to the site that originated the news is a no-go. The name was credited, and anyone who wants to can simply google it (and perhaps a few relevant keywords) to find their way there.

Maxconsole themseves didn't find it, a member of their forums found it. Also, as far as I could see Maxconsole didn't release the news as an official news item on their website - it was a forum post only. I stand by my statements, as your later post changed nothing.

They didn't link to the site because it linked to pirated material. THis is a good enough reason in my opinion. Scoops and exclusives are not requirements for Australian news sites. Also, you accused PALGN of piracy, and piracy in writing means plagiarism. I did, in fact, use the term correctly, and Palgn did not 'pirate' the story as it did give a reference. Also, the fact that a NEWS SITE re-reported news from a news site's forum ruins your opinion of this site? Get a grip, man. PALGN have acted correctly in this situation.

EDIT ^^ This man is correct. He basically summarised my post into 3 or four sentences.
