Mario Strikers online detailed

Wii News | Two-on-two online, and Friend Codes optional.
Those complaining about the lack of online Wii games may finally have something to placate them in the coming months, after it was announced that Mario Strikers: Charged Football would be coming to Ninty's console on May 25 in PAL regions. Full online play is implemented, and today Eurogamer was told a little more about how it worked.

First off, yes - Friend Codes are still present, though wisely there's also an option for random matches stuck in there. These are region-locked however, so if you are playing against strangers, Aussies will only play Aussies, and you'll all escape my mad UK skillz, though swapping Friend Codes will allow players to link up with opponents from other parts of the world.

According to Nintendo UK, the game lets two players use the same Wii online as well, so you can sit down with a friend to take on the World. There will be Unranked and Ranked matches, with the latter influencing your position on online leaderboards.

The Wii remote's motion-sensing capabilities are a key part of general play - a flick of the controller allows players to either check their opponent and rob them of possession, or make agile saves. There's Super Abilities to take into account also, from Mario growing to giant proportions and trampling other players, to Peach taking a photo and freezing the entire opposing team on the spot. And neatly, fouled players are given the tools for revenge, such as red shells and Chain Chomps that chase players from the opposing team around the pitch.

Sounds fun. We'll have more closer to release.

Are these friend codes the Wii's friend code, or game specific?

Either way the game does look nice, and it'll be nice to have a 4 player game that doesn't require me to run around like an idiot.

Pass, I'm afraid DIU.

Not mentioned on any Nintendo press release, and I haven't read about that elsewhere either.

I'm sure that'd you'd be pretty stunned too if a Princess flashed you.

I was already interested in this game (mario sports titles for YES), but finding out about the online play has made it a must get I think. There's not much better than 4 player matches of Power Tennis, but playing vs. the CPU is pretty dull - and I imagine the same will follow for Strikers - so having that online there that'll let me play with friends whenever is very tantalising. Mmm... wacky sports goodness.

So I'm confused. Can you play a 2 vs 2 game with friends? Or is it like Mario Kart where 'is your friend happens to be online' crap?

Two-on-two games are available online and offline.

Hmmm 2 steps forward 1 step backward! Yay we can play people that are random, boo it's region locked! Ok I can understand reasons for doing this, but TBH what happens if I am playing at a time where no other Aussies are playing. I just want to get in a match and just verse someone!

But like I said it is a step forward!!!

The region locking is obviously a good thing in the short term, as it means improved latency for everyone! Yay!

...And it's just as obviously a bad thing in the long term, as it'll become impossible to find random opponents that much faster as the game gets older and loses it's player base. Boo!

The logical thing to do would be to allow an international toggle somewhere in the options where only people who know what they're doing will mess with it. 'course that makes too much sense to ever actually happen. icon_razz.gif

Does that mean 'send invite' ala lobby system? Be interesting to see how they do this.

The region locking thing makes no sense at all. I mean, you could play people all over the world in Mario Kart DS. Maybe Nintendo aren't confident enough that there will be no lag.

All they had to do is make this so that the friend codes being used are those in the Wii address book, and I'd be excited. I don't think they are though. ;(

What about with Motorstorm. It is not region encoded, but you are still assigned to Aussie servers and guess what, no latency!!

Thats what I reckon, I think once they use this as their test run game, we will see more to come, because the only reason why I could see a region lock is because of latency!

I was about to bring that up - PS3 games online services (for a few games) are region locked and everyone raves about how good it is for gaming, Wii online services (for one game) are region locked and it's terrible? But... isn't it still fashionable to slag off the PS3? You're bucking the trend, people!

I'm just glad that we're finally getting some online with the Wii (not that it should have taken this damned long, but it's better than nothing).

Trends are there to be bucked. icon_wink.gif

But I wasn't talking about the region locking of the servers on a Nintendo game, but the actual region locking of the games on the console.

Yeah, sorry, I only got you in on that quote because you mentioned Motorstorm which is what I was thinking of after the 'region locked multiplay' was mentioned.
I admit it's a sloppy post, but in my defense it was 5:14am and I was drunk icon_razz.gif

Er, I unquestionably and irrevocably do not support region-locking in the commercial, discs-only-work-in-some-countries'-machines sense. I hates it more than I hates Baggins, even. icon_evil.gif

...But were we talking about that? The topic was about online matches being restricted geographically, hence my comment. icon_razz.gif

The first online Wii game is sounding pretty good, which is nice

but has anyone played the original Mario Strikers, was it any good?
Most places seem to suggest the gameplay was good, and the multiplayer was great, it was just the lack of a decent single player mode which hurt it - which is less of a problem with a decent online mode attached.
