Wii sells 100,000 consoles in Australia

Wii News | Super Paper Mario release month confirmed.
Nintendo of Australia has sent out a press release which confirms that 100,000 Wii consoles have been sold in Australia. This officially makes the Wii the fastest selling home console to reach 100,000.

“We are pleased that Wii has achieved this benchmark, but we are ecstatic that it attained this whilst also reaching new audiences and expanding the scope of our entire industry” explains Rose Lappin, Director of Sales and Marketing. “We promised we would bring gaming to the masses, I think this is proof that we are heading in the right direction”.

Nintendo also confirmed Super Paper Mario will be hitting the Wii in September, as well as PANGYA! Golf. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition will be out on July the 5th and Mario Paty 8 will be out on July the 19th.

As much fun as I've had with my Wii (shutup) I find it vaguely amazing that it has sold so well with so few games to back it up. Thankfully those release dates (SPM, freakin finally!) go a little way to remedy that.

Are the numbers for the PS3 and 360 alltime sales in Australia available?

Finally, a frickin' release date for Super Paper Mario! Joy!!!

Well I can understand why it is doing so well, everyone who finds out I have a wii wants to play it, many of who went and got thier own. At the same time there are just too few games. I find that my wii only gets played when others are over and when its myself at home I stick to the 360. Wii is a party system in my house, thats where it ends

It's the hype machine that is still selling it, really only people who follow the games industry closely knows the quality and quantity of games available. For any regular customer when they see a shelf full of games to them it looks like it has just as many games as the 360 or Ps3 whatever....it's just a shelf full of games to them and they'll just grab whatever looks interesting.

I've got a couple of mates that are still hyped about the Wii because they haven't played with mine yet, but all my other mates who were hyped about it and have actually played mine are SO over it.

It's like most products, when the hype dies down so will the sales.

Also great to see a release date for Super Paper Mario but dissapointing to see it's in September (are you frickin' kidding) cuz there are way too many other more important games for me to get/play around that time. I'll buy it when it comes out but it probably won't get played for a while.

Not that I am getting Super Paper Mario, but that is friggin piss poor treatment from Nintendo once again to get it out in September especially since there's nothing out now.

Yet over 6 months later, the "hype" is still going strong. Interesting, eh?

It's cheap, that's why it sells. Knowing customers, they are much more enticed when you say "$399" instead of "$999" or "$599". And the motion sensors seem to entice them even more.

And honestly, I have to admit that the PS3 (at my store anyway) is picking up pace. I'm guessing word of mouth or something, because we've sold out on quite a few batches.

So Super Paper Mario is their counter to Halo 3?

So why would that be so interesting? You're telling me this is the only product you've seen that has had 6 months hype? Umm have you heard of the Grand Theft Auto games? Those games are hyped for years after their initial release (hot coffee, court cases etc).

Halo had hype and keeps selling, hype can carry a console though an entire lifetime which means the Wii could be huge.

Good luck to Nintendo. They have stuffed about for the last two generations.

A more credible response from Rose should have been "Damn we are surprised our strategy actually worked". icon_razz.gif

Nintendo still need to get their act together in terms of getting original software in the hands of these new gamers, supporting PAL territories better and providing a quality gaming experience not found on the other higher performance platforms.

Outside of Twlight Princess the line up looks decidely below average.

Seriously though, why if they are selling so well they have dropped their prices of late?

As for expanding the industry they have a long ways to go yet before claiming that little pat on the back.

That's why I want the hype to die down, I really don't want the industry to head in that direction, it's awesome as an alternative but i'm not about to change the fundamentals of how I play games and have played games for the last 20 years or so. I'm happy with the 'more power' approach and once that gets maxed or close to reaching it's potential (when games start looking like movies) then i'll be ready to branch out.

I think holgraphic images or actual 3d display screens are where motion control will be required.

Didn't the 360 set the previous record for fastest to reach 100 000? Her logic that getting that record vindicates the statement of “We promised we would bring gaming to the masses, I think this is proof that we are heading in the right direction” really does suck, assuming that's true.

Exactly. Its simple Supply and Demand. To an average consumer, all these machines are going to look eerily similar so of course the cheaper one will sell better.

What's with SPM release date? September? Wasn't that when we were supposed to get Metroid or Galaxy or Smash icon_eh.gif ? That's piss poor support.

I love my Wii, but it doesn't deserve these kind of sales. I'm glad that Nintendo are back in the game, I just can't help but wish the gamecube had sold this well.

What Luke said is what I was getting at, don't underestimate hype. Its carried the Wii this far already, so far it's looking very good for the Wii.

Ugh, it looks like the industry is beginning to branch out earlier than you would like, but it doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Time goes on, things change, and if the Wii continues to be this successful, then expect to see more of this in future. This could be a defining point in the history of gaming, motion sensing (as a concept, not necessarily the Wii itself) has the potential to really change the industry for good. At the very least, it will certainly have an impact, you can hardly expect Sony and Microsoft to completely ignore what's going on with the Wii (look at the Sixaxis, it's already begun).

I know what you mean about holographic images, but I think the Wii is the first step towards that sort of thing. We can't just keep maxing out our consoles, and then just suddenly perfect motion sensing and move on. It's a gradual thing, people need to adjust to it, and programmers have to learn how to make it work, and work well.

No point in getting to the age of holgraphic images or 3d display screens if the motion sensing is barely usable.

I'm happy to have both the Wii and a high powered next gen console. We have two of those (360 and PS3), so having a nice happy alternative is great. The Wii is a machine where I can waste 30 mins with when I'm up for something less serious. Whack on SMB or Mario Strikers and up and running.

I'm happy there is choice and for once we have a totally different alternative. Nintendo would have out and out lost the next-gen war if they tried to compete with Sony and M$. At least this way they can still create their own products and release games when they are ready.

We tend to keep forgetting the reason the DS and Wii is selling is because people who would never buy a videogame machines are buying the them. They don't really care about Super Paper Mario and most likely they don't turn their console for more then an couple of hours a week. But when the next 'silly fun game' comes out they'll rush out and buy it. But Nintendo still have the loyals following which will buy their established brands like Zelda etc. Nintendo are totally in a win-win position and when the games start rolling in at the end of the year the momentum will continue to grow. The DS had a much worst start then the Wii, and look where that is.

They will always be an industry for high-end graphics games and techology so I think we are just seeing the industry split to taylor for different consumers. This is a great thing IMO. I'm glad Nintendo is back on top because I love their games the most.

Yeah, they definitely should have went third party developing. icon_razz.gif

As for splitting the market, as long as it doesn't divert resources from our sector, then I don't care.

Well the current 'Wii hype' is 'where are the frickin' games?', so don't expect it to carry the console forever. It's like with everything....word spreads.

I think LeonJ hit the nail on the head when he said the Wii caters for a different style of gamer so more than anything I think it's the actual demographic that will carry the Wii, because current Wii hype isn't very positive and it can't be the reason for the positive sales.

What I find really fascinating is the PS2 already had games catering for this market segment (Buzz!, Singstar, Eyetoy, Guitar Hero, etc).

Maybe Sony didn't convert enough people with their marketing.

I used to think "normal" consumers assumed the Wii was in the same league as Xbox 360 and PS3 but one of the ladies at work did know the difference she just liked the name icon_rolleyes.gif and Wii sports. Her biggest complaint was XBox 360 games were quite violent (how quaint).

hmmm well i'm glad for wii, and i'm interested in seeing how far it will go and seeing if anything will happen to it in the near future. i hope it stays successful and doesn't become a paperweight in the near future because i think this system brings the best when it comes to simple fun games which you can pick up and play, would make a great side dish to my ps3 now that i think about it.

PS2 only became casual in the later part of its lifetime when it hit dirt cheap prices.

Sony was probably planning the same thing for the PS3 but got undercut along the way by Nintendo.
