E3 2007: Hands-on with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles

Wii Feature | Something smells rotten.
As the House of the Dead series has quite brilliantly demonstrated, zombies plus light guns is a formula with the potential to be a match made in heaven. Yet whenever Capcom’s otherwise tremendous Resident Evil games have strayed into the light gun genre, it’s always ended in the same, unhappy way - with Capcom having its proverbial intestines yanked out of its still-breathing body by bloodthirsty, ferocious critics. Resident Evil: Survivor on the first PlayStation? Broken. Resident Evil: Dead Aim on PS2? Also a load of old hogwash, we’re sad to report.

So as well as having the added responsibility of showing off the new Wii Zapper, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles on Nintendo’s console needs to salvage some respect for Capcom when it comes to Resi-themed, on-rail shooters. Worryingly, on the evidence we saw at E3 this week, we’d say the game has a distance to go before it achieves redemption.

The problems start early, and quickly mount up like a pile of decomposing limbs. The graphics are instantly noticeable, and not in a positive way. Frankly, we found Umbrella Chronicles to be ugly. The fact that the game was positioned all of fifteen feet away from the eye-massagingly gorgeous Super Mario Galaxy didn't help it in this respect, and it came off looking decidedly rough around the edges. We’ve already mentioned this in our hands-on report of the Wii Zapper, but we’ll say it again: Resident Evil 4, a two-year old title and GameCube-to-Wii port, is considerably better-looking.

Action? If only.

It’s not simply the lousy, derivative art direction, or the tired, clichéd visual indicators (you’ll be amazed to hear that the game is packed with red barrels that explode - explode! - when shot. Who would have thought, etc.). Everything is at least three shades too dark, the character models are hardly elaborate, and the death animations - a crucial part of any light gun shooter, you’d think - are limited and underwhelming.

The weapons are just as mediocre. There were only three available in the demo version at E3, and although there will certainly be more in the finished game (rockets and grenades have been confirmed), why bother if they’re all going to feel the same? In fact, if they took away the icon in the top-left corner that tells you which firearm you’ve got equipped, it would be near-impossible to tell whether you were carrying the handgun, shotgun or SMG. The only perceptible difference can be seen in the impact the bullets make, with the shotgun producing a broad spray of shrapnel.

What’s more, it’s all terribly easy. We’re willing to be somewhat forgiving on this point - this is a work-in-progress, after all - but right now, you’re given far too much time to take aim. We’re well aware that Capcom promised to make Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition nice and easy for granddad, but now it appears that Umbrella Chronicles could befall the same fate.

The game’s zombies shuffle towards you at such a leisurely pace that you almost feel a twinge of guilt in taking them down, while the beasties that are supposed to be swift and deadly in these kind of titles are way too tentative. The zombie dogs, for instance, simply crouch there for an age before attacking, as though waiting for a belly-rub. We don’t want this - we want these foul, eternally damned creatures to launch themselves at us, intent on chewing our nose off. Yet it just doesn’t happen. The other Resi games might be renowned for creating tension and suspense, but this has all the edginess of a game of bridge. Any slight moments of difficulty come about because of the twitchy reticule, though in the title’s defence, the Zapper should probably take some of the blame for that.

Put your feet up - there's another fifteen minutes before they reach you.

However, perhaps the most worrying aspect of the game’s inadequate Santa Monica showing is that there’s not exactly a great deal of time left for Capcom to right the wrongs. If Umbrella Chronicles was down for a Holiday 2008 release, we’d be confident that the issues we’ve mentioned could be corrected. Yet Capcom has committed to a 2007 release date, giving itself just over five short months to get things in order. And given that the last stages of game development are reserved for debugging and testing, we’re not massively confident that the Resident Evil franchise will be getting the light gun experience it so obviously deserves. Here’s hoping we’re proved horribly wrong. Over to you, Capcom.

Judging from survivor and the Dead Aim spin-offs they should stick to third person. If this one fails try should try with a real light gun, the Guncon 3.

For me, Dead Aim really was a quite enjoyable gaming experience. Sure, it didn't have the a really heavy-driven storyline, laden with complex plottwists and strongly developed characters; but it did what it had to do. It gave me some dirty zombies to shoot down.

The screenshot with the zombies far away looked great. But when you see the close-up details it does seem ugly. Well I know that five months may not seem like a long time, but it does give them at least 2 months to get it all sorted before testing.

Ouch thank goodness I picked a 360 over a Wii for my Resident Evil fix. Then again E3 didn't show much on RE5 but how bad can it be based on the RE4 formula?

^ Are we even sure that RE5 is based off the RE4 formula? It may return to its real survival (read: little ammo, frustrating controls) horror roots. Afaik the earlier games in the series sold better than RE4 did.

RE:UC was planned to be spitting image of RE4 but Capcom decided against it since they perceive the Wii's audience as having a better reception to an on rails game.

Well I suppose we aren't sure but I don't think Capcom would go back to the old way. Pretty much everyone who played Resident Evil 4 loved it. Critics adored the new style and any reversion to the old would be majorly trashed in reviews.

Its sales weren't spectacular because they lost significant momentum on the PS platform and the gamecube had a small userbase. It was a long time between Code Veronica on PS2 and RE4 on PS2 with only a couple of mediocre Outbreak titles in between. I'd say a lot of fans from the PS era lost track of the series.

I read something like that. But I also read Resident evil wii was test to see how gamers would like the new RE. Originally they wanted RE5 on it, but werent so sure.

Anyway this game will be one I'm guessing it wont be bad cause its Capcom. I hope. icon_confused.gif

A 2007 launch at this level seems like suicide. What are you thinking Capcom? Isn't it worth taking the time out to fully polish the title instead of rushing mediocre crap out?

You saden me Chris-Leigh icon_sad.gif

Hopefully it gets fixed at least a bit before it's released. At least you'll still be able to go through the stories of RE1-4

It's all the stupid Wii's fault I tellz ya! icon_wink.gif

Anyways I was quite looking foward to this game and to an extent i'm still considering buying it (as long as it scores above or around 70%) cuz it's a proper Resident Evil storyline game....but I guess i'll just have to wait and see how it turns out. Knowing Capcom they'll polish it up fine.

Knowing that gaming events demoes are made deliberately more easy, it was quite funny, in a vid I watched, seeing a zombie literally next to you and it didn't even attack, it was just standing there. First I thought it was a glitch, but then the player shot at it... then it move around you still not attacking. This zombie must've had a full stomach, cause he aint hungry for a bit of Jill Sandwich.
