PAL Super Paper Mario bug acknowledged by Nintendo

Wii News | A little something extra for those who waited.
The life of a PAL gamer is often filled with frustration, particularly when it comes to lengthy waits for particular titles, but sometimes it can be worse. Hot off the heels of the Mario Party 8 fiasco, Nintendo has acknowledged this morning that a game breaking bug can occur in the UK version of Super Paper Mario.

Nintendo of Europe's site elaborates that "When you are playing Super Paper Mario in UK English, German or Spanish, a problem can occur in a very specific situation. Since the situation where the error occurs is so specific, it’s very possible that you may not experience any issue at all.

At the start of Chapter 2-2, you will come across a character called Mimi. She will tell you to go to the farthest room on the first floor to meet a character called Merlee. Enter that room and press the green switch. A trap will be triggered, and a spiked ceiling will descend upon Mario. Before the ceiling reaches him, flip into 3D and jump on it to find a key.

If you pick up the key, you won't run into any problems. Use it to open the locked door to Mimi's right. However, if you talk to Mimi without picking up the key, the game will freeze. You will then have to turn off your Wii console and start again from your last save point.

Please note that your game freezing up will not do any damage to your Wii or the game itself, but we do sincerely apologise for this error and the inconvenience caused to your gameplay experience."

Nintendo of Europe will be providing details for replacement discs shortly. At this stage, we have no word from Nintendo Australia as to their plans for any recall. Super Paper Mario will be available in stores today.

Why only in the PAL version? How weird. I can't imagine Nintendo would do a recall for something so trivial, heaps of games have similar bugs without getting recalled.

Perhaps once in the long forgotten past Nintendo and PAL were lovers, running wild and carefree. I wonder what horrible turn of events turned them into such bitter enemies?

A crash bug after such a long delay is poor form, get your **** together Nintendo.

Makes you wonder what they spent the last half a year doing... Seriously, what?

I simply cannot fathom the ineptitude of this... icon_neutral.gif

That is really quite shocking. A game released, and fully tested (one would assume) ships with a bug that big! For a PC (or even a PS3 or 360) game is one thing, but for a Wii game where you can't get patches.

All this time we wait and we get a bug like this, lol.

Oh get off it guys, that is a miniscule bug, like really. If it were a bug where you lost a saved game slot or the game saved ater you got stuck in an area and had to restart a new game to keep playing.....then.......maybe......

I got raped by a bug like this in Metroid fusion, though it was considerably worse.

Having unlocked a new area, a door opened, rather than going through it, I decided to go back and save first. Upon revisiting the door to get to the next area, I was greeted with a newly locked door in place of the open one, and because I saved the only way to get through the door was to start over. Being several hours in, I decided it wasn't worth the effort, and didn't go back.

I'm pleased that they made this announcement, as I purchased the game today, and now know what not to do, so long as all it does is lock up, and doesn't remove save data, brick the console or make it impossible to continue without starting over, I consider it a mere inconvenience.

It shouldn't have happened, especially since it was a bug added in the excruciatingly long PAL conversion, it's annoying, but could have been much worse.

...It could have included the word "Spastic" for instance.

It's annoying, makes you wonder why it wasn't removed in the excessively-long conversion process, but if all it does is freeze the game at that specific point with those speciifc circumstances, then no biggie.

hmm, i wonder why there is a replacement deal, for such a small thing you would think they would just print out what they put in the press statement and package it in with the games, perhaps the new version will be out by the time i finally have money

my guess is they forgot to add a speech code somewhere.

i'm guessing that if you spoke to this Mimi character after triggering the event, but before finding the key, she was supposed to say something along the lines of:
"Go find the key, dumbass!"
but something in the translation was **** up and the command for the game to know which language to say this in was omitted - leading to the crash.

This is quite surprising from Nintendo. Their QA is usually spot on.

Apparantly not all copies have the bug, when I get to the specific part, I'll see for myself, either way it's easy to avoid, shouldnt have happened, but at least it doesnt ruin the game.

well, my copy has the bug, and the whole thing really does feel like what i guessed is what happens.

it's pretty annoying though, because if you play as per the speech, there's no indication to suggest there even is a key to find - so basically in order to beat this bug, they've spoilt the puzzle.

easy to avoid - yes, but only if you knew about the bug prior to playing that level.

any word on if NinAu is replacing bugged discs too?
