The Witcher Enhanced Edition announced

PC News | Shouldn't the original have been delayed?
One of the games that had us rather impressed late last year was The Witcher. While the action RPG was rather impressive, it did feature a few flaws. Well, the good news is that these flaws will be addressed, with CD Projekt RED announcing that in May this year, The Witcher Enhanced Edition will be released.

There will be quite a few enhancements to the original title. The new version will remove the technical obstacles that hinder the player from properly using the game. Loading times will be reduced by 80% and there will be a wide array of smaller fixes which will increase interactivity and precision in combat. The English version of the game will be completely redone. The amount of text in the English version was originally reduced compared to other language versions, now it will include all of the original text. There are also 50 new supporting characters and the inventory panel in the game will be re-designed and improved.

There is no word yet on whether existing owners of The Witcher will get this upgrade for free or if they'll have to buy the game again, but we'll let you know once more information becomes available.

Several times I have been so close to buying this. I'm glad I waited so that I can get this enhanced version.

I am surprised about this announcement though. It seems like a bit of a gamble.

Well the original release was still highly competent.

Doesn't bother me, they're releasing this new content in patch form for the early purchasers.

Free upgrade for people who already have the game, according to the developer.

And no, it shouldn't have been delayed. It's an excellent game provided you like RPGs. Flawed, but still extremely solid. The only reason they can do this is that they've managed to move over 600,000 copies which is well in excess of their expectations.

The impression that you get looking at all the material is that this is a developer who absolutely loves their product. Everything about it screams attention to detail and the sort of polish that only could be possible if it was a labour of love. Also, I feel like this is really more of a bonus for fans. They're probably hopeful that this will tip all the fence-sitters over into purchasing it too.

Incidentally the collector's edition was one of the best I've ever had. Put the 'Collectors Edition' releases of other games last year eg Bioshock, Mass Effect to shame. I especially liked the fact that when they say that it comes with an artbook, it actually means that it comes with an artbook, not a couple of random images roughly printed onto a manual-sized booklet.

EDIT: To back up the assertion at the top of the post:

"Fans that have already bought the game need not worry, however, because the new content and improvements will be available to them in the form of a downloadable update"
-- Adam Kiciński – the head of CD Projekt RED
