Star Wars: The Old Republic revealed

PC News | BioWare-LucasArts MMO officially announced.
LucasArts and BioWare have officially announced Star Wars: The Old Republic, a massive-multiplayer online game set in the early years of the Star Wars universe. As previously speculated, the game is being developed at BioWare Austin.

During a press conference held in San Francisco (as reported here by Joystiq), BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk took the stage, describing Star Wars: The Old Republic as a "story-driven MMO". When asked about a third Knights of the Old Republic game, it was said that the development team jokes that "The Old Republic is KOTOR 3/4/5 and beyond!".

The Old Republic takes place more the 3,500 years before the Star Wars films, and approximately three hundred years after the events portrayed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Star Wars: The Old Republic's official website provides a summary of what has happened in the years since KOTOR ended: "The most powerful Sith Empire in history has emerged from deep space to attack the Republic and its legendary Jedi guardians. After decades of war, a tenuous truce has been established between the Sith Empire and the Republic, but events occurring in the game are leading the galaxy back to an all-out war."

Star Wars: The Old Republic allows you to align with the Sith Empire or Galactic Republic, play as one of several sub-classes, and choose whether to pursue the dark or light side of the Force. According to LucasArts, players will carve out their own personal story and be accompanied by their own companions in the game.

Electronic Arts is partnering with LucasArts for the game's release, which is currently only confirmed on PC.

another MMO that i want to get, but don't want to pay for...

will have the same problem as the last one, everyone wants to be a jedi.

Screw the light side of the force the evil guys ALWAYS get to have more fun.

I reckon this pretty much nails it. As much as you want to be good and pure in KOTORs I and II, the fact is, Force Lightning and Choke are damn cool, and you only get to use them properly if you're evil. I reckon they've got a shot. Perhaps they'll have a restriction system that places a limit on the populations of the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic on each server.

Really, everyone wants to be a Jedi? No one wants to be Bobba Fette or Han Solo? I know I would.

Isn't this the point of the Old Republic series? You are a Jedi, not just some dude with a blaster.

Looks great, might consider jumping on board despite my extreme dislike of pay-to-play schemes.

If they can keep jedi as hard was it was to get pre-NGE then there wont be 500,000 at launch running around. If they can also stick to their current formula except give more reasons to not be a jedi, this game will ROCK.

No I don't see this as a problem the same way as Galaxies. Having everybody as a jedi/sith is the way to go and not restricting you to having mudane roles. Galaxies was crap because the ultimate goal was to become a Jedi.

I'd imagine there will be different classes of Jedi/Sith.

Bioware are in on this so I expect it to turn out pretty well.

Don't like where this is headed, the joke in regard to "Old republic in KotOR 3,4,5 etc" was really just frightening, because yeah, every RPG on PC should be an mmo.. right? And that one again Grey Knights are shut out and it's Jedi or Sith is also blah, the whole damned emphasis of the Skywalker family is that they are grey by nature and evenly spaced with the light or dark, are they going to remove this concept as playable or keep it as bland as it has been already when playable "your future is cloudy" "remember, heal not fry with lightning" where one over he other is simply depowered a bit?

I shudder at what they're going to do with the universe since they set up the premise that Revan stopped killing the Republic to combat the Sith Empire threat, write off the entire character much?

Dammit.

I played Warhammer Online at launch; I absolutely love the Warhammer universe, and it was great to have an RPG set in it. But then I started disliking it... I eventually realised it was because I was sharing it with other people, many of whom obviously didn't take the game as seriously as I. It totally killed the mood and atmosphere- and therefore fun- of the game for me. Considering how those were the biggest strengths of the KOTOR series, this news is just one big nightmare for me...

^ RP servers? They're not foolproof but better then most.

Hmm.... this might be ok.
In an MMO they'll really need to even up the jedi and sith abilities, in KOTOR I and II being a sith made it too easy...

as long as it doesn't intefere with KOTOR III, I'm all for it.

But how sweet would it be if it had Jedi Academy Style Gameplay? An MMO of that kind of Jedi Fighting instead of your "click" to attack would be sweet as.

Well as long as it doesnt have subscriptions i'll be getting it.
3 years ago
If it takes the Guild Wars "subscription" model, then i will cum my pants.
If it takes the Hellgate: London model, i'll be pissed.
If it takes the WoW model, i'll shrug.

Chances are it'll be monthly payments.

What was the hellgate London one?

I'm conflicted over this, because in MMO's and most other RPG's I play as a ranged character because I love guns and bows and all that business... but how can you turn down a lightsaber? I suppose you could throw it, but wtf is that? Boomerang Jedi? Lame.

Actually when you think about it, instead of having a lightsabre for deuling you could really have someone with a few smaller knife like weaponry where say they have 4 could theoretically use all 4 as targeted projectiles. I mean it'd be similar in a lightsabre being thrown on the horizontal beheading someone and then spinning back but instead you could assume the smaller projectiles would be thrown on the vertical or as a piercing (like Jedi Academy) since that actually has credence in lore. Double ended sabres also can then be shortened to other martial weaponry without too much difference or "that's entirely moronic" opinion.

I'd much much much rather KOTOR3. KOTOR was my favourite game of the last generation, yet I have zero interest in playing an MMO with other people (I like my games anti-social thank you very much), not to mention I can't stand the idea of paying an ongoing fee to have access to a game I've already bought.

I want Tonfa lightsabers. They looked awesome in force unleashed.

That was in my thinking, but also saw the potential for a different take on force powers as well, focusing on manipulation of instead of the usual, which could bring in;

wind & fire wheels;

meridian axes;

or sais. Since you can really see how each could done and could add a level of difference to combat with keeping with the overall theme of a focused light orientated sabre. In effect you already have the bo staff (double ended sabre) the typical martial sword (generic sabre) and a 9 ring broadsword / rapier (Dooku's) which focused more on sweeping instead of piercing where you could see Tonfa or more personal weaponry to fit with the lightsabre forms. For instance Soresu (focusing on repelling blaster fire) could then be reworked with a shorter weapon (since it requires less movement to change directions) and translate to quicker action / strikes.

This way you're changing the dynamics of how the force is executed (instead of having everyone run around with force lightning and battle meditation one could forgo that to manipulate their blade to a whip (Empire at War) or other manipulation of objects as above) as well as redefining combat and thus class structure with the forms as well.

Just yeah, don't see them doing this at all.

Double Edged light saber is nothing like a bo staff. I can't think of any real world weapon it does resemble but yeah the fight style is complety diffrent. Compare how say, Kilik from soul calibur fights with his bow staff to Darth Maul.

Also are those the Klingon axes from star trek? I don't think they'd be possible because... well you can't curve light.

Yes you can, Astronomy/Theory of General Relativity 101. Also the technology to do so exists within the expanded universe of Star Wars.

I was really excited as I was told this morning KOTOR 3 is coming, now I see it's an MMO... The developers need to be thrown to the lions.

Of course fight style is different, grabbing from anywhere but the hilt would result in loss of hand which would change the fighting style immensely. icon_razz.gif I was speaking shape with that & the sabre and motion with Dooku as, assuming you could grab the double bladed anywhere it would be much like a bo staff in execution. (which in turn leads into manipulation aspect)

Also, what Klingon axe? If I recall my watchings they had a couple of different axes, traditional and one with like 2 hook things either side. There are hook swords (swords where the hilt is bladed and curved over the fist & instead of a piercing point the blade is tipped to a hook) as well as similar style axes in regards to Wu-shu weaponry?
